Among the various subsidence causing activities the author has considered the underground mining in sedimentary deposits and withdrawal of water from the underground sources as the most important from the point of view of Indian scenario. Underground mining of sedimentary deposits in India has been going on for more than 225 years and as yet there is practically no indigenous literature available for the use of the mining operators, planners, students, etc. All these people in the country have to depend on the foreign literature although the knowledge of subsidence movements and their management is not only essential for underground mine planning but also for getting the environmental clearance and ensuring the safety of the underground workings. An analysis of the indigenously available literature revealed that there is an urgent necessity of simple but effective guidelines useful to the mining operators, etc. Therefore, the author has made an effort in this book to make the operators aware of the importance of subsidence management and then of the methodology for the management so that in majority of the situations they can take their own decisions and for the complicated cases they can seek expert advice. The activity of the withdrawal of water from the underground sources in the country is many decades old as for the various purposes, e.g., agriculture, industries, and domestic uses, water from these sources is being pumped out. Although, globally the subsidence movements due to this activity have attracted attention, the concern in India has not yet come to any age as hardly any literature is available on this subject. Keeping the above facts in view the following aspects of the subsidence movements due to the two activities have been discussed in this book. 1 Causes of subsidence movements 2 Impacts of subsidence movements 3 Potential areas in India 4 Dangers to underground workings 5 Two and three dimensional prediction of subsidence movement in sedimentary deposits with suitable examples 6 Prediction of the impacts of subsidence movements in sedimentary deposits with examples 7 Subsidence management in sedimentary deposits, including optimization of the subsidence movements with suitable examples, impact mitigation, management of subsided land for various uses, and converting impacts into resources 8 Monitoring of subsidence movements in mining areas and their interpretation 9 Subsidence prediction requirements 10 Five case studies of coal mining subsidence covering the situations of the extraction below surface properties and mine planning below forest areas The above for the sedimentary strata mining subsidence have been explained in such a manner that the mine officials at the site can use the subsidence management know-how without practically any difficulty. Book excerpt: Cities built on unconsolidated sediments consisting of clays, silt, peat, and sand, are particularly susceptible to subsidence. Such regions are common in delta areas, where rivers empty into the oceans, along flood plains adjacent to rivers, and in coastal marsh lands. Building cities in such areas aggravates the problem for several reasons: 1. Construction of buildings and streets adds weight to the region causing additional soil deformations. 2. Often the regions have to be drained in order to be occupied. This results in lowering of the water table and leads to hydro-compaction. 3. Often the groundwater is used as a source of water for both human consumption and industrial use. 4. Levees and dams are often built to prevent or control flooding. Earth fissures caused by ground failure in areas of uneven or differential compaction have damaged buildings, roads and highways, railroads, flood-control structures and sewer lines. As emphasized by Barends , "in order to develop a legal framework to claims and litigation, it is essential that direct and indirect causes of land subsidence effects can be quantified with sufficient accuracy from a technical and scientific point of view." Most existing methods and software applications treat the subsidence problem by analyzing one of the causes. This is due to the fact that the causes appear at different spatial scales. For example, over-pumping creates large scale subsidence, while building loading creates local subsidence/consolidation only. Then, maximum permissible land subsidence (or consolidation) is a constraint in different management problems such as: groundwater management, planning of town and/or laws on building construction. It is, therefore, necessary to quantify the contribution of each cause to soil subsidence of the ground surface in cities urban area. In this text book, we present an engineering approach based on the Biot system of equations to predict the soil settlement due to subsidence, resulting from different causes. Also we present a case study of The Bangkok Metropolitan Area (BMA).

At the beginning it dealt mainly with the study of periglacial loess deposits of the Pleistocene Glacial Period in Central Belgium and with coastal deposits in relation to sea level rise during the warm Holocene period covering the last 10,000 years, in which the dawn of civilization took place step by step. Today the same research teams widen their scope of interest: they are presently studying the loess plateau in the People's Republic of China and the world-wide problems associated with sea level rise, coastal erosion being one of the most devastating natural hazards. More and more emphasis is put on problems concerning environmental engineering and those dealing with global change. Since 1975 UNESCO sponsored a number of symposia of the International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA), whose secretariat was located on the VUB Campus grounds from 1973 to 1982. In 1981 the Applied Geology Department ofthe Faculty of Applied Sciences was created. The NATO-Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) , organized in Fuerteventura (Canary Islands, Spain) in March 1989 was a climax of this series of Global Change gatherings. As Rector of the VUB, I am satisfied that the VUB, through its Earth Technology Institute, of both USA and Belgium could cooperate with NATO and the National Science Foundations in cosponsoring such an initiative.
