Derartige Oberflächenstrukturrierungen begünstigen jedoch das Partikelfouling, daher die Ablagerung suspendierter Partikel, wie z.B. Sand, Schlamm oder Korrosionsprodukte. Gegenstand dieser Arbeit ist die Entwicklung eines universellen, numerischen CFD-Verfahrens zur Vorhersage des partikulären Foulings auf strukturierten Oberflächen, speziell Dellenoberflächen. Das entwickelte Verfahren basiert auf einer Kombination des Lagrangian-Particle-Trackings zur Beschreibung der dispersen Phase (Foulingpartikel), sowie räumlich und zeitlich aufgelöster Large-Eddy Simulation für die Berechnung der kontinuierlichen Phasen (Trägerfluid). Dieses Vorgehen ermöglicht nicht nur die Auswertung der infolge der Partikelablagerungen verminderten thermo-hydraulischen Effizienz, sondern auch die Untersuchung der Wechselwirkungen zwischen turbulenten Strömungsstrukturen und dem partikulärem Fouling. Dadurch kann gezeigt werden, dass die Verwendung von sphärischen Dellen als Oberflächenstrukturen nicht nur aus thermo-hydraulischer Sicht die optimale Wahl darstellt, sondern auch eine substantielle Verminderung des Partikelfoulings begünstigt. The application of structured heat transfer surfaces, such as dimples or ribs, increase the local turbulence and thus thermal mixing. This can improve the efficiency of heat exchangers or cooling systems significantly. However, structured surfaces are known to promote particulate fouling, hence the unwanted accumulation and deposition of suspended particles (e.g., silt, sludge or iron oxide). The scope of this work is the development of a universal numerical CFD method for the prediction of particulate fouling, especially on dimpled surfaces. The proposed approach is based on a combination of the Lagrangian point-particle tracking for the description of the disperse phase (fouling particles), and spatially and temporally resolved large-eddy simulations for the calculation of the continuous phase (carrier fluid). This approach allows not only the evaluation of the reduced thermo-hydraulic efficiency due to particle deposition, but also the investigation of the interaction between turbulent flow structures and the particulate fouling. It can be shown that the usage of spherical dimples as surface structures is not only the optimal choice from a thermo-hydraulic point of view, but also favors a substantial reduction of particulate fouling.

First, the particle dispersal in a one-dimensional shock-tube is considered. The primary focus is on how the existence of particles causes the flow to transition from the frozen to the equilibrium limit. The second problem entails the investigation and resolution of numerically induced particle-number-density fluctuations in Eulerian-Lagrangian simulations of multiphase flow. Guidelines to reduce the amplitude of the fluctuations are proposed that can be easily applied in practice. The third problem considered in the dissertation is the modeling and analysis of particle interaction with shock and blast waves. The study clearly demonstrates the importance of the unsteady force and heat transfer in the interaction of particles with shock and blast waves. Finally, we consider the problem of particle dispersal by blast waves. The focus is on investigating the interactions between particles with the complex wave system. The unsteady contributions to force and heat-transfer are again found to be substantial.

Further, the applicability of the EUgran+ model is extended to cover dilute to dense poly-disperse particulate flows. Furthermore, this provides an improvement in the numerical simulation of dust separation and the formation of particle strands in industrial scale cyclones. In this PHD thesis, the EUgran+Poly model is validated at 3 specific cases with different mass loadings: I) poly-dispersed particle conveying in a square pipe with a 90 degree bend at low mass loading (L = 0:00206); II) a particle conveying case in a rectangular pipe with a double-loop at high mass loading (L = 1:5); III) in a vertical pipe the implementation of the agglomeration model is validated. To show the applicability of the presented models a simulation of an industrial cyclone in experimental scale is presented. The validation and application shows that considering a poly-disperse Eulerian-Eulerian granular phase improves the accordance of the simulation results with measurements significantly. Finally, the hybrid model is a good compromise for a computational efficient simulation of particulate transport and separation with different mass loading regimes.

The objective of this thesis is to improve a previously proposed Eulerian CFD model for the heat transfer of a highly mass loaded high Reynolds number particle-laden flow. Experimentation had shown that a layer of copper particles accumulated on the bottom of the flow channel. The previous two field (gas + dispersed particle) model was extended to include a third field to represent this particle layer. Mass transfer models were developed to account for the deposition of particles from dispersed to particle layer and from particle layer back to dispersed. New drag and heat transfer models were developed to account for the interaction of the particle layer field with the core gas flow. The model is tested and implemented using NPHASE, an Eulerian Multiphase flow CFD solver, and suggestions for improvement are proposed.

Book excerpt: High-speed particle-laden flows are studied through a combination of high-order Eulerian Lagrangian (EL) method development, multi-scale modeling and the analysis of normal, shear and wake instabilities. The EL code is based on a Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) discretization, which captures discontinuities sharply while ensuring higher-order resolution in smoother areas. The favorable characteristics of WENO methods are extended to the EL framework with an Essentially Non-Oscillatory (ENO) scheme to interpolate the carrier phase from the Eulerian grid to the particle location. A high fidelity multi-scale method is introduced that couples full-resolution micro-scale statistics with the macro-scale. Using a Taylor expansion of the drag correction factor and Reynolds averaging of the particle transport equation, the Subgrid Particle Reynolds Stress Equivalent (SPARSE) model is derived. A mantle is constructed to provide closure for the particle drag and subgrid particle dynamics models. The efficacy of several metamodeling techniques in building a mantle with a target uncertainty using the least number of support points is compared. Grid aligned shocks at high mach numbers create normal instabilities that bleed into the particle phase. These so-called ``carbuncles'' have a predominantly numerical nature and can be mitigated by adjusting the nonlinear WENO power parameters. Instabilities that are induced by the accelerated flow behind a moving shock in the wake of a cloud of particles are analyzed. The initial shape, orientation and dimensionality of the particle cloud with respect to an oncoming normal shock determines the particle dispersion at later times. Dispersion characteristics are matched with results reported in literature. Streamlined cloud shapes exhibit a lower dispersion as compared to clouds with an initially blunt shape. Lower particle number density areas away from the heavily populated cloud core accelerate more. Growth rates of shear instabilities computed with the EL code are compared with the results of a linear stability analysis of particle-laden shear layers. The growth rate of shear layers with non-uniformly laden low Stokes number particles is greater than an unladen shear layer whereas a shear layer with high Stokes number particles dampens the growth.

The procedure consists of two sequential steps: (i) Prediction of mean flow and turbulence fields via a turbulent flow model; and, (ii) Employment of the calculated flow and Turbulence fields to drive a Lagrangian Stochastic Particle Model. Two flow scenarios in which the approaching mean wind is assumed to be at 90° and 30° to the building complex are used as input to the Lagrangian model. The first calculation is based on an earlier transport and diffusion simulation that employed an existing particle-in-cell flux-gradient dispersion model. The second simulation is used to demonstrate the strong spatial variations that the concentration field exhibit within the highly complex separation zones of building wakes. The relationship between concentration levels and toxic load are discussed for the case of a chemical spill.
