Book excerpt: In many engineering applications involving mixing of highly viscous fluids or mixing at micro-scales, efficient mixing must be accomplished in the absence of turbulence. Similarly in geophysical flows large-scale, deterministic flow structures can account for a considerable portion of global transport and mixing. For these types of problems, concepts from non-linear dynamical systems and the theory of chaotic advection provide the tools for understanding, quantifying, and optimizing transport and mixing processes. In this thesis chaotic advection is studied numerically in three, steady, experimentally realizable, three-dimensional flows: 1) steady vortex breakdown flow in a cylindrical container with bottom rotating lid, 2) flow in a cylindrical container with exactly counter rotating lids, and 3) flow in a new model stirred-tank with counter-rotating disks. For all cases the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically and the Lagrangian properties of the computed velocity fields are analyzed using a variety of computational and theoretical tools. For the flow in the interior of vortex breakdown bubbles it is shown that even though from the Eulerian viewpoint the simulated flow fields are steady and nearly axisymmetric the Lagrangian dynamics could be chaotic. Sil?nikov?s mechanism is shown to play a critical role in breaking up the invariance of the bubble and giving rise to chaotic dynamics. The computations for the steady flow in a cylindrical container with two exactly counter-rotating lids confirm for the first time the findings of recent linear stability studies. Above a threshold Reynolds number the equatorial shear layer becomes unstable to azimuthal modes and an intricate web of radial (cat?s eyes) and axial, azimuthally-inclined vortices emerge in the flow paving the way for extremely complex chaotic dynamics. Using these fundamental insights, a new stirring tank device with exactly counter-rotating disks is proposed. Results show for the first time that counter rotation of the middle disk in a three-disk stirred tank can create a flow with large chaotic regions. The results of this thesis serve to demonstrate that fundamental studies of chaotic mixing are both important from a theoretical standpoint and can potentially lead to valuable technological breakthroughs.

Book excerpt: Even though the first theoretical example of chaotic advection was a three-dimensional flow (Henon, 1966), the number of theoretical studies addressing chaos and mixing in three-dimensional flows is small. One problem is that an experimentally tractable three-dimensional system that allows for detailed experimental and computational investigation had not been available. We begin by examining a three-dimensional construct (the Sphere Flow) which exhibits chaotic particle trajectories. This is used as a test bed for theory and numerics to aid in subsequent design. Then a prototypical, bounded, three-dimensional, moderate Reynolds number flow is presented; this system lends itself to detailed experimental observation and allows for high precision computational inspection of geometrical and dynamical effects. The flow structure, captured by means of cuts with a laser sheet (experimental Poincare section), is visualized via continuously injected fluorescent dye streams, and reveals detailed chaotic structures and chains of high period islands. Numerical experiments are performed and compared with particle image velocimetry (PIV) and flow visualization results. Predictions of existing theories for chaotic advection in three-dimensional volume preserving flows are tested. The ratio of two frequencies of particle motion---the frequency of motion around the vertical axis and the frequency of recirculation in the plane containing the axis---is identified as the crucial parameter. Using this parameter, the number of islands in the chain can be predicted. The same parameter---using as a base-case the integrable motion---allows the identification of operating conditions where small perturbations lead to nearly complete mixing.

Book excerpt: Over the past ten years the study of chaotic advection, namely the chaotic motion of particles in deterministic dynamical systems derived from velocity fields associated with simple fluid flows, has come to the fore as a model and means of obtaining efficient mixing. The main question addressed in the research supported by this grant has been to determine how useful the ideas and tools of dynamical system theory, successful in analyzing chaotic advection models, are for studying mixing in high Reynolds number, i.e. turbulent flows. The link between dynamical systems ideas and turbulence is provided by the Lagrangian picture of the fluid, namely the fluid particle description. Accordingly our work has centered on developing Lagrangian descriptions of the stretching and alignment, the processes by which mixing is achieved, for passive and non-passive scalars and vectors. This has led to some new insights into the mechanisms of fine scale vorticity dynamics and identified the subtle and critical role of pressure fluctuations. In the case of the (non-passive vector) dynamics of magnetic field lines, a Lagrangian formulation of 3-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamics equations has identified the possibility of a finite time singularity around magnetic null points.

Book excerpt: Mixing may be thought of as the operation by which a system evolves from one state of simplicity (initial segregation) to another state of simplicity (complete uniformity). Between these two extremes, complex patterns emerge and die. Questions naturally arise- how can the geometry of complex patterns be characterised, what is the time scale of the process, what structures are involved in the flow? This volume, comprising the proceedings of the NATO ASI on Mixing, attempts to address these questions from the approaches of geometry, kinetics and structure. The ASI which brought together diverse communities with a common interest in the problem of mixing, now provides us with a comprehensive work on the problem of mixing.

Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of a colloquium held in Monte Verità from September 9-13, 1991. Special care has been taken to devote adequate space to the scientific discussions, which claimed about half of the time available. Scientists from all over the world presented their views on the importance of kinematic properties, topology and fractal geometry, and on the dynamic behaviour of turbulent flows. They debated the importance of coherent structures and the possibility to incorporate these in the statistical theory of turbulence, as well as their significance for the reduction of the degrees of freedom and the prospective of dynamical systems and chaos approaches to the problem of turbulence. Also under discussion was the relevance of these new approaches to the study of the instability and the origin of turbulence, and the importance of numerical and physical experiments in improving the understanding of turbulence.

Book excerpt: Introduction to Geophysical Fluid Dynamics provides an introductory-level exploration of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD), the principles governing air and water flows on large terrestrial scales. Physical principles are illustrated with the aid of the simplest existing models, and the computer methods are shown in juxtaposition with the equations to which they apply. It explores contemporary topics of climate dynamics and equatorial dynamics, including the Greenhouse Effect, global warming, and the El Nino Southern Oscillation. Combines both physical and numerical aspects of geophysical fluid dynamics into a single affordable volume Explores contemporary topics such as the Greenhouse Effect, global warming and the El Nino Southern Oscillation Biographical and historical notes at the ends of chapters trace the intellectual development of the field Recipient of the 2010 Wernaers Prize, awarded each year by the National Fund for Scientific Research of Belgium (FNR-FNRS)
