The uplift capacity of fastened roof panels has been investigated using experimental tests and numerical models, where monotonic uniform static pressures are often applied to the roof panel models. The verification is needed for the adequacy of using static uniformly distributed pressure representing the wind load. Moreover, the uncertainty of nail withdrawal behaviour has not been included in existing numerical models, and the effect due to construction errors has not been addressed rationally. A nonlinear Finite Element model is developed in this study to incorporate the nail withdrawal uncertainty in terms of maximum withdrawal force, initial stiffness, proportional limit, and the displacement at maximum force of the nail withdrawal behaviour. This model is used to investigate the statistical characteristics of the panel uplift capacity. The effect of spatial varying wind load is discussed by using the pressure coefficient obtained from wind tunnel model test at the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel at the University of Western Ontario. Furthermore, the impact of construction error is investigated, in terms of missing nail effects, with first-hand survey information. The detailed survey was carried out at the IRLBH (The Insurance Research Lab for Better Homes) facility to inspect the quality of construction, specifically for the statistical information of missing nails on roof panels. Finally, the evaluated statistical characterization of panel uplift capacity is used for the reliability analysis of a typical panel considering or ignoring the missing nail effects. Both code specified pressure-gust coefficient from NBCC (2005) and the peak pressure coefficients obtained from wind tunnel test are used. Results suggested that the nonlinear pushover analysis using the proposed nonlinear Finite Element model is adequate for estimating the panel uplift capacity. A more stringent fastening schedule with a spacing of 150 mm for the edges and intermediate supports is suggested for the construction of light frame wood houses.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Following the damage caused by Hurricane Andrew (1992) several research institutions and universities made an effort to improve the performance of residential wood roof sheathing panels in extreme wind events. The outcome of this research was predicted panel uplift resistance based on observed performance under varying static test methods. Changes in panel construction have resulted in improved wind uplift resistance, however failures are still observed below design level wind speeds. It is the hypothesis of this investigation that some residential wood roof sheathing panel failures are due to current test methods overestimating panel resistance. Previous wood roof sheathing panel uplift tests have used uniform static pressure on newly constructed panels. However aged wood roof sheathing panels are subjected to temporally varying pressure loading in the field. As part of this research standardized test protocols are developed for static and temporally varying (dynamic) pressure loading. Panels fabricated in the lab and harvested from existing construction are tested with static and dynamic pressure. Over 170 panels were tested statically, 38 of which were harvested from existing construction, and 34 panels were tested statically vs. dynamically. It is found that dynamic loading reduces uplift capacity of wood roof sheathing panels approximately 20%, and that age or weathering do not appear to effect the uplift resistance of panels.

Most of these damages are initiated when the metal roof edge fails first, leading to overall roof failure. This is because peak wind pressures occur at the edges and corners of low-slope roof buildings. Currently, there are not enough wind design guidelines for the Canadian roofing community to quantify the dynamic wind uplift resistance of the roof edge system. The objective of this research is to evaluate the effect of wind-induced loads on roof edges using a finite element model, verify the numerical results with those obtained from controlled experiments, and perform parametric investigations for various design variables. In this research, the overall roof edge system was modelled using the commercial finite element software package ABAQUS, by simulating the roof edge system with shell elements and applying a uniform static pressure against the face of the edge cleat or coping. Results of the modelling were compared to the experimental ones in terms of deflection of the coping under uniform pressure. The results of the numerical model and the experiments show a good agreement. Furthermore, a parametric analysis of the system was conducted under the effect of varying parameters. i.e., coping gauge, nail spacing, coping and cleat length and wind and thermal load application.

Book excerpt: Light-frame wood residential buildings are highly susceptible to damage caused by severe wind events such as hurricanes and tornados. Roof failures in residential buildings are commonly observed due to weaknesses of or missing connections. Roof-to-wall connections not only have significant influences on roof performance but also affect building resistance due to their critical role of transferring wind loads to the wall system and ultimately to the foundation. Roof fails when it has no sufficient wind uplift resistance due to improper selection or installation of construction materials (including fasteners) and strength degradation due to aging or long service. Toenailing is commonly used in roof connections, which was found to be inadequate in high-wind areas. One approach to improve roof performance is to use metal connectors in roof connections. However, it was found out that such an approach may result in a water leak due to fasteners' holes, weakening the substrate, and being susceptible to wind-induced fatigue damage. Elastomeric adhesives have been increasingly applied in civil engineering construction due to its ease of installation, long service life, environmental stability, cost-effectiveness, and better bonding performance over continuous interfaces and increase stiffness. The goal of this dissertation is, therefore, to enhance the performance of light-frame wood construction to resist the adverse effects of extreme wind events through developing an affordable, efficient, long-service, and nonintrusive roof connections using elastomeric adhesives (i.e., polyurethane and polyether). Specifically, their research tasks are carried out: (i) experimentally evaluate wind uplift resistance of the proposed adhesive connections using the monotonic uplift loading tests; (ii) experimentally evaluate the wind-induced fatigue performance of the connections under the fatigue cyclic loading tests; and (iii) numerically evaluate a three-dimensional roof structure with the adhesive connections under uniform and ASCE design wind pressures. The results from the monotonic tests show that the addition of adhesives significantly increases the uplift load capacity by (200%-460%) and energy dissipation by (200%-750%). The fatigue loading tests consist of both constant amplitude and realistic varying amplitude cyclic loadings. These tests' results show that adding adhesives to connections significantly increases the endurance limit by 250~330%. From the numerical analysis, it is observed that the three-dimensional gable roof structure using adhesive connections has reduced roof sheathing stresses (200~400%) and deformations by 200% under uniform uplift pressure. Moreover, the adhesive roof structure can resist a Category 4 wind speed (130-156 mph) per the ASCE 7-16 specification.
