Book excerpt: A series of new and relevant experimental results are here presented to the community for the first time. In particular, we refer to the measurement of the neutron spin structure functions by the SLAC (E142) and CERN (SMC) collaborations; the first results from MAMI on experiments with tagged photons (A1 collaboration), on electroproduction of multi-hadron final states (A2 collaboration) and the neutron form factor (A3 collaboration); the experiments on strangeness photoproduction at ELSA; the polarization experiments at Bates on the neutron form factor and nuclear response functions and the photon and electron scattering data obtained by the Genova-Frascati Jet Target collaboration.Focused on the study of spin observables and exclusive processes at high momenta, the following sessions were held: The Neutron Form Factors; Spin Structure Functions; Exclusive Processes at High υ and Q2. Deep Inelastic Scattering; Spin Observables; One- and Two-Nucleon Knockout at Low and Intermediate Energies; Excitation of Baryons Resonances and Strangeness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a collection of reviews of some of the recent developments in nuclear physics research at intermediate energies from across the globe. It especially focuses on the most essential aspects, such as multifragmentation and associated phenomena in nuclear collisions, with the incident energy region between a few MeV and several hundreds of MeV/nucleon. The topic of the book—multifragmentation—was chosen based on the fact that all heavy-ion collisions revolve around a fragmenting system, which is also thought to have a link to phase transitions. One unique and valuable dimension of this book is that it has brought together the research of several experts working in the field of intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions in various renowned laboratories of the world. It provides a thorough review of the recent developments in various related phenomena, especially multifragmentation, observed at the intermediate-energy range, both theoretically and experimentally. It extensively discusses the concept of nuclear symmetry energy, which is important for the nuclear physics and astrophysics communities. In addition, the book identifies potential research directions and technologies that will drive future innovations. It will serve as a valuable reference for a larger audience, including students who wish to pursue a career in nuclear physics and astrophysics.

Book excerpt: "An account of interactions of nucleons, with energies of 100 MeV and greater, with nuclei. In particular a detailed account is given of certain reactions, elastic and inelastic scattering and knockout reactions, whose mechanisms can be understood relatively simply. The reasons for this simplicity are described, together with the resulting features seen in experimental measurements. Because of their simple features these reactions are useful tools for the study of nuclear structure: it is shown how they have demonstrated important systematic features of the structures of light nuclei"--Front jacket flap.

Book excerpt: The development of higher energies and better resolution in heavy-ion beams has led to a resurgence of interest in transfer reactions at energies well above the Coulomb barrier. Direct reactions with heavy ions are discussed in some detail. Heavy-ion reactions open up the possibility of new methods of spectroscopy, e.g., elastic transfer. Differential cross sections for heavy-ion ' transfer reactions are often featureless; however, some data show diffractive effects. The high angular momenta associated with recoil effects in heavy-ion reactions can be exploited to perform selective spectroscopy on light nuclei. Although most heavy-iontransfer data suggest that reactions proceed in a direct fashion, recent experiments indicate the presence of second-order multistep processes. Correlated nucleon transfer and transfer of many nucleons (e.g., (12C, alpha)) are also being investigated. (20 figures, 3 tables, 93 references) (RWR).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is a unique and ambitious primer of nuclear physics, which introduces recent theoretical and experimental progresses starting from basics in fundamental quantum mechanics. The highlight is to offer an overview of nuclear structure phenomena relevant to recent key findings such as unstable halo nuclei, superheavy elements, neutron stars, nucleosynthesis, the standard model, lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD), and chiral effective theory. An additional attraction is that general properties of nuclei are comprehensively explained from both the theoretical and experimental viewpoints. The book begins with the conceptual and mathematical basics of quantum mechanics, and goes into the main point of nuclear physics – nuclear structure, radioactive ion beam physics, and nuclear reactions. The last chapters devote interdisciplinary topics in association with astrophysics and particle physics. A number of illustrations and exercises with complete solutions are given. Each chapter is comprehensively written starting from fundamentals to gradually reach modern aspects of nuclear physics with the objective to provide an effective description of the cutting edge in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The processes which can lead to the radiative capture of fast nucleons include direct transitions in the nuclear potential, transitions in which coherent multipole resonances are excited, transitions by nucleons which are excited in early intranuclear collisions, bremsstrahlung from nucleon-nucleon collisions and photon evaporation'' from a thermally equilibrated nucleus. Corresponding processes occur when an energetic photon ejects fast nucleons from a nucleus. As experimental information from capture and photoreactions has become more detailed, inconsistencies and uncertainties have appeared which reflect difficulties in identifying and separating the responsible processes. This has led to more sophisticated and more complicated theoretical treatments which in turn have promoted new and more demanding experiments. 38 refs. 10 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the Workshop on Momentum Distributions held on October 24 to 26, 1988 at Argonne National Laboratory. This workshop was motivated by the enormous progress within the past few years in both experimental and theoretical studies of momentum distributions, by the growing recognition of the importance of momentum distributions to the characterization of quantum many-body systems, and especially by the realization that momentum distribution studies have much in common across the entire range of modern physics. Accordingly, the workshop was unique in that it brought together researchers in nuclear physics, electronic systems, quantum fluids and solids, and particle physics to address the common elements of momentum distribution studies. The topics dis cussed in the workshop spanned more than ten orders of magnitude range in charac teristic energy scales. The workshop included an extraordinary variety of interactions from Coulombic to hard core repulsive, from non-relativistic to extreme relativistic.
