The cross-section, kinematic distributions, charged particle multiplicity, strange particle production, and dilepton production for these events are compared to those for samples of ..nu../sub ..mu../ and /bar /nu///sub ..mu../ charged-current events obtained during the same experiment. No evidence for a violation of ..nu../sub ..mu../−..nu../sub e/ universality is observed. The universality of charged leptons has a strong experimental foundation. However, the universality of neutrinos is not as well established. We report on a detailed study of ..nu../sub ..mu../−..nu../sub e/ universality, including comparisons of cross sections and many properties, such as kinematic distributions and the strange particle production rates. These results represent an order of magnitude improvement in statistics over previous bubble chamber studies of neutrino universality. Counter experiments have measured cross sections only. 12 refs., 9 figs.

Book excerpt: The Mini-Booster neutrino experiment (MiniBooNE) at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) is designed to search for [nu]{sub [mu]} → [nu]{sub e} appearance neutrino oscillations. Muon neutrino charged-current quasi-elastic (CCQE) interactions ([nu]{sub {mu}} + n → {mu} + p) make up roughly 40% of our data sample, and it is used to constrain the background and cross sections for the oscillation analysis. Using high-statistics MiniBooNE CCQE data, the muon-neutrino CCQE cross section is measured. The nuclear model is tuned precisely using the MiniBooNE data. The measured total cross section is [sigma] = (1.058 ± 0.003 (stat) ± 0.111 (syst)) x 10−38 cm2 at the MiniBooNE muon neutrino beam energy (700-800 MeV). [nu]{sub e} appearance candidate data is also used to search for Lorentz violation. Lorentz symmetry is one of the most fundamental symmetries in modern physics. Neutrino oscillations offer a new method to test it. We found that the MiniBooNE result is not well-described using Lorentz violation, however further investigation is required for a more conclusive result.

Book excerpt: In an experiment carried out at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, eight candidates for the reaction .nu./sub .mu./ + N .-->. .mu. + e + anything were observed with a total background of 1.5 +- 0.6 events. The detector consisted of twenty-eight optical spark chambers interspersed with liquid and plastic scintillation counters. Events classified as muon--electron final states are required to have a long noninteracting straight track in conjunction with an electromagnetic shower characteristic of that produced by an electron. Background processes are discussed and the total muon--electron background calculated. The ratio of the number of muon--electron candidates to all charged current events, corrected for the percentage of the neutrino beam above threshold is R' = (sigma(.nu./sub .mu./ + N .-->. .mu. + e + anything))/(sigma(.nu./sub .mu./ + N .-->. .mu. + anything)) greater than or approximately 10/sup -2/. 47 references.
