Book excerpt: Over the past decade the topic of emissions reduction and control has remained an important area of research due to the enforcement of various Government policies in an attempt to minimize the impact on the environment. One area in which a great deal of research has been conducted to address this policy is NOx/SOx suppression. However, despite the progress that has been made over this time period, further research into the most effective method of reducing NOx/SOx emissions is still urgently required. In developed countries, a more stringent requirement in the level of emissions (such as is NOx/SOx component of less than 10ppm) will be enforced in the near future. Developing countries will also need a new technology that is effective and that is suited to each countries needs. Additional research and development efforts are thus necessary to meet such requirements. This compendium contains a collection of key papers themed around NOx/SOx emissions from combustion of hydrocarbon resources and the attempts to secure an efficient and effective method for reducing these emissions. These key papers are taken from the journals Fuel, Fuel Processing Technology and Progress in Energy and Combustion Science.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT The current work briefly reviews the formation mechanisms and reduction approaches of the pollutants SOx and NOx in coal combustion and focuses on the simulation of the lower-cost in-furnace measures ƒ{ the dry additive process (DAP) for SOx reduction and the reburning as well as the advanced reburning (hybrid reburning/SNCR) techniques for NOx reduction. In addition, the influence of sulfur compounds on NOx formation is investigated. The major workings include: Simulation of the dry additive desulfurization process (DAP): Different models ƒ{ shrinking core model (SCM), pore model (PM) and grain model (GM) ƒ{ are implemented to describe the gas-particle reaction. Relevant processes such as the sintering of the additive, the self-retention by coal ash, the thermal equilibrium of the sulfation reaction are accounted for and modeled. A comprehensive model for the DAP with calcium based additives is subsequently established and integrated into a combustion CFD (computational fluid dynamics) code AIOLOS, in both Eulerian and Lagrangian schemes. The model is verified with experiments on a test reactor. Mechanism reduction and simulation of reburning/SNCR Processes: A method for reduction of kinetic mechanisms is introduced. A program tool is developed for automatic reduction of detailed reaction mechanisms. Reduced mechanisms for reburning and hybrid reburning/SNCR processes are developed and implemented into the CFD code. CFD-calculations with the reduced mechanisms are performed and compared with experimental measurements to comprehensively evaluate the simulation approach. It is shown that the detailed simulation is capable of modeling the complex reburning and SNCR processes with acceptable computing time and achieves reasonable results in wide parameter ranges. Study of the influence of sulfur compounds on NOx formation: The effect of SO2 on NOx formation is experimentally investigated and analysed with kinetic mechanisms. It is indicated that the presence of SO2 inhabits the NOx formation and reduce the NOx emissions in normal air-rich combustion. Under air-staging conditions, SO2 addition has no obvious influence on the final NOx emissions.

Book excerpt: This report examines the effects of fuel type, facility, and operating parameters on SO2 and NOx emissions from three bubbling fluidized bed combustion (FBC) pilot plants, two circulating FBC pilot plants and an industrial bubbling FBC heating plant. The relationship between the NOx and CO emissions, the NOx and SO2 emissions, and the SO2 and CO emissions were also examined. Data are summarized from the results of 40 separate test programs providing information for 12 coals, a coal-water slurry, three cokes and four heavy oils.

Book excerpt: The emission of nitrogen oxides from combustion of coal remains a problem of considerable interest, whether the concern is with acid rain, stratospheric ozone chemistry, or {open_quotes}greenhouse{close_quotes} gases. Whereas earlier the concern was focused mainly on NO (as a primary combustion product) and to a lesser extent NO2 (since it is mainly a secondary product of combustion), in recent years the emissions of N2O have also captured considerable attention, particularly in the context of fluidized bed combustion, in which the problem appears to be most acute. The research community has only recently begun to take solid hold on the N2O problem. This is in part because earlier estimates of the importance of N2O in combustion processes were clouded by artifacts in sampling which have now been resolved. This project is concerned with the mechanism of reduction of both NO and N2O by carbons. It was recognized some years ago that NO formed during fluidized bed coal combustion can be heterogeneously reduced in-situ by the carbonaceous solid intermediates of combustion. This has been recently supplemented by the knowledge that heterogeneous reaction with carbon can also play an important role in reducing emissions of N2O, but that the NO-carbon reactions might also contribute to formation of N2O. The precise role of carbon in N2O reduction and formation has yet to be established, since in one case the authors of a recent study were compelled to comment that {open_quotes}the basic knowledge of N2O formation and reduction still has to be improved{close_quotes}. The same can be said of the NO-carbon system. In this program, carbons studied include graphite, resin char, coconut char, and a Wyodak coal char.

Book excerpt: The use of fluidized bed coal combustion technology has been developed in the past decade in The Netherlands with a view to expanding the industrial use of coal as an energy supply. Various research groups from universities, institutes for applied science and from boiler industries participated and contributed to this research area. Comprehensive results of such recent experimentation and development work on atmospheric fluidized bed combustion of coal are covered in this volume. Each chapter, written by an expert, treats one specific subject and gives both the theoretical background as well as experimental results and verifications. Though the contents deal primarily with coal combustion, much information proved applicable and relevant for the combustion or incineration of other solid fuels and waste in a fluidized bed. Results of extended research and fundamental backgrounds are presented in order to provide the designer and operator of fluidized bed combustors with more complete and systematic information needed for an optimal design and operation. The design and operating experience of a full scale fluidized bed boiler are discussed and compared with the results of theoretical and experimental research on pilot plant scale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal contributes to almost forty percent of global power generation. As conventional coal-fired power generation technologies result in large CO2 emission, the pursuit for new technologies focuses on either reducing CO2 emission or that allows easier capture of the emitted CO2 from coal-fired power plants. Oxy-fuel fluidized bed (Oxy-FB) combustion is one such technology due to its ability to produce concentrated CO2 stream in the flue gas. This concentrated CO2 allows easier capture for subsequent transportation and storage. Other important benefits of this technology are the potential for using any type of fuel, and the ability to control SO2 and NOX emissions. Despite its perceived advantages over conventional technologies, very little is known about the applicability of Oxy-FB for brown coal. Brown coal accounts for 91% of Victoria's current electricity needs. Since Victoria has an estimated reserve of over 500 years of brown coal at the current consumption rate, successful application of Oxy-FB can potentially result in environment friendly power generation in Victoria. This first-ever study investigates the Oxy-FB combustion using Victorian brown coal in a combined experimental and modelling approach. The research involves designing and commissioning of a 10 kWth fluidized bed rig, carrying out experiments in laboratory scale and bench scale equipment, and performing thermodynamic and process modelling.Laboratory scale experiments using single char particle were conducted to investigate the combustion characteristics of individual and large char particle under Oxy-FB conditions. Particle temperature was observed to be higher compared to bed temperature. Up to 48°C difference was noticed between the char particle temperature and the bed temperature using 15% (v/v) steam in oxy-fuel combustion atmosphere. The temperature of the char particle during Oxy-FB combustion has practical implication for agglomeration. The bench scale experiments were carried out to evaluate combustion efficiency, agglomeration characteristics, sulphation characteristics, carbonation characteristics, NOX (NO, NO2 and N2O) emission, SOX (SO2 and SO3) emission, and trace elements (Hg, Se, As and Cr) emissions during Oxy-FB combustion of Victorian brown coal. A high level of CO2 concentration (90-94% in dry flue gas), over 99% combustion efficiency and no bed agglomeration under oxy-fuel combustion conditions including those with the addition of steam at temperatures between 800°C and 900°C. Moreover, the measured NOX and SOX concentration levels in the flue gas are within the permissible limits for coal-fired power plants in Victoria. This implies that additional NOX and SOX removal systems may not be required with Oxy-FB combustion of Victorian brown coal. The gaseous mercury concentrations, however, are considerably higher under oxy-fuel combustion compared to air combustion suggesting that mercury removal system may be required to avoid corrosion in the CO2 separation units if CO2 capture and transportation is intended. These conventional pollutants and trace elements emission characteristics are of great importance for the design of the gas cleaning systems for CO2 capture and storage (CCS) purposes. Furthermore, these results also provide information for selecting the optimum operating condition.Thermodynamic equilibrium modelling was carried out to predict the compounds formed during the combustion of Victorian brown coal under different Oxy-FB combustion conditions. It was predicted that the amount of toxic gaseous Cr6+ species was greater for oxy-fuel combustion than for air combustion. The distribution of toxic Se4+ species, however, remained almost the same in both combustion conditions within the typical temperature range for Oxy-FB combustion (800 - 950°C). A process model on Oxy-FB combustion using Aspen Plus was also developed to predict combustion performance of any coal during Oxy-FB. It was observed that the concentrations of CO and SO2 were higher in the lower dense region of the bed. These levels, however, dropped significantly with the introduction of secondary oxygen. The simulation results were consistent with the experimental data. Overall, this thesis has identified several important issues, for the first time, on Oxy-FB combustion using brown coal. The information generated is useful for academics, industry and policy makers. Future research on Oxy-FB combustion can use the findings of this study while developing Oxy-FB combustion for brown coals.
