Book Synopsis The Book of Experience by : Emmanuel Falque
Download or read book The Book of Experience written by Emmanuel Falque and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emmanuel Falque, one of the foremost philosophers working in the continental philosophy of religion today, takes us by the hand into the very heart of 12th-century monastic spirituality. Translated into English for the first time, The Book of Experience weaves together contemporary phenomenological questions with medieval theology, revealing undiscovered dialogues already underway between Hugh of St. Victor and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, between Richard of St. Victor and Emmanuel Levinas, between Aelred of Rievaulx and Michel Henry, and not least between Bernard of Clairvaux and the trio of Descartes, Heidegger, and Jean-Luc Marion, consummating in a masterful phenomenological reading of Bernard's sermons on the Song of Songs. Whether it is a question of 'the idea that comes to God' (Anselm of Canterbury) or actively 'feeling oneself fully alive' (Aelred of Rievaulx or Bernard of Clairvaux), Falque uses these encounters to shed light on both parties, medieval and modern, theological and philosophical. Leading us through works of art, landscapes, architectures, and liturgies, this major contemporary philosopher of religion clarifies mysteries and discovers experience lying at the heart of the medieval tradition.

Book Synopsis The Spiritual Dimension by : John Cottingham
Download or read book The Spiritual Dimension written by John Cottingham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-15 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spiritual Dimension offers a new model for the philosophy of religion, bringing together emotional and intellectual aspects of our human experience, and embracing practical as well as theoretical concerns. It shows how a religious worldview is best understood not as an isolated set of doctrines, but as intimately related to spiritual praxis and to the search for self-understanding and moral growth. It argues that the religious quest requires a certain emotional openness, but can be pursued without sacrificing our philosophical integrity. Touching on many important debates in contemporary philosophy and theology, but accessible to general readers, The Spiritual Dimension covers a range of central topics in the philosophy of religion, including scientific cosmology and the problem of evil; ethical theory and the objectivity of goodness; psychoanalytic thought, self-discovery and virtue; the multi-layered nature of religious discourse; and the relation between faith and evidence.
Book Synopsis Redeeming Conflict by : Ann M. Garrido
Download or read book Redeeming Conflict written by Ann M. Garrido and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2016-03-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems counterintuitive: conflict can be a blessing. But Catholic theologian and conflict mediator Ann M. Garrido identifies conflict as a potentially fruitful exchange that arises from living and working together in the diverse world God created. Garrido, author of the bestselling Redeeming Administration, offers twelve practical habits for responding to conflict, pairs each habit with a spiritual companion from history, and offers questions and prayers for growth. In Redeeming Conflict, Ann Garrido explains that conversion comes through conversation, that there is a difference between “the truth” and “my truth,” and that you should be curious and practice “Pentecost listening”—or empathic listening—even if you think something is way off base. Garrido will help Christian leaders discover how to speak directly with colleagues about tensions and about how to know themselves well enough to keep from becoming defensive in the face of negative feedback. She uses saintly examples to illustrate her points, calling upon stories of St. Francis and a Muslim sultan, Leo the Great, Archbishop Óscar Romero, and Our Lady, Undoer of Knots. Garrido also offers sample exercises and tools to work through conflict within an organization and provides self-assessment questions and a prayer at the end of each chapter to help apply it to your personal and professional life. A small group discussion guide and a parish resource guide, which features homily and bulletin aids are available as a free downloads for the book. Redeeming Conflict was a 2017 winner of the Association of Catholic Publishers Excellence in Publishing Award: Resources for Ministry (Second Place) and Honorable Mention in the 2017 Catholic Press Association Book Awards: Professional Books.
Book Synopsis The Philosophy of the Commentators, 200-600 AD: Psychology (with ethics and religion) by : Richard Sorabji
Download or read book The Philosophy of the Commentators, 200-600 AD: Psychology (with ethics and religion) written by Richard Sorabji and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of this invaluable sourcebook covers three main subject areas. First, the metaphysics of Aristotle's logical works: the concepts of universal and particular underwent surprising transformations in this period, which gave rise to debates, still raging today, on personal survival after an interruption such as death. Second, logic in a more conventional sense: perhaps the most impressive debate was on the existence of the subject in singular and universal statements. There was also debate about the very different Aristotelian and Stoic conceptions of syllogism, of modal logic, of induction, of the nature of mathematics, and of philosophy of language. Third, the higher metaphysics of the Neoplatonists taught Augustine, and indirectly Descartes, to look for truth within themselves. The Neoplatonists struggled with the question whether our higher intellectual selves have distinct individuality, and thus they fed both sides in the great medieval debate between Aquinas and the followers of Averroes on individual human immortality. All sources appear in English translation and are carefully linked and cross-referenced by editorial comment and explanation. Bibliographies are provided throughout.

Book excerpt: A chosen quietude that trains us in self recovery and self discovery. The church fathers and mothers agree that perhaps the highest form of spirituality is a self-awareness. Knowing God in Christ profoundly is knowing self deeply; knowing self profoundly precedes knowing God in Christ deeply. That ontological awareness is unfolding daily. Our meditative proclivity trains our weary souls to cut a clearer path toward spending time and space (the meaning of contemplation) with God, and with others.

Book Synopsis Reality and Scientific Theology by : Thomas F. Torrance
Download or read book Reality and Scientific Theology written by Thomas F. Torrance and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2001-11-28 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the author argues for a rigorous scientific theology under the double constraint of the reality of God and the reality of the world of space and time. Careful attention is given to the common commitment of theological and natural science to objective knowledge, and the deeply natural relation between knowledge of God the Creator and knowledge of the world he has made. Stress is laid upon the stratified structure of theology and the need for a radical simplification and unification of Christian doctrine. Is theology the "science of God", and is it concerned with objective knowledge like natural science? Is there a natural theology and how is it related to knowledge of God through divine relation? How is the community of faith within which dogmatic theology arises related to the social coefficient of scientific inquiry? What is the place of mysticism and of art in theology? Does theology have a special notion of truth, and does it have its own inner logic and structure? These are some of the main questions which this book seeks to answer.
