Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United States has come to know Spain, its people, and its land through its literature and, more recently, through the international distribution of many of its films. This analysis aims to probe the creative Spanish soul in greater depth through the particular prism of the cinematic adaptation." "The analysis of the Spanish novels La familia de Pascual Duarte and Los santos inocentes and their cinematic adaptations Pascual Duarte (1975) and Los santos inocentes (1984) is based on the intersection of literary and cinematic theory." "The first chapter of this study summarizes various theories whose integration forms a basis for the analysis of the cinematic adaptation. Structuralism, semiotics, deconstruction, reader criticism, and Freudian/Lacanian psychology serve both film and literary criticism in their analysis of texts. The theories examined in this chapter are inflected in later chapters into the criticism and analysis of the novels and films in question." "The second chapter provides general background information on agrarian Spain - the historical, economic, and ideological context of both La familia de Pascual Duarte and Los santos inocentes. While in most cases the texts refer only obliquely to the reigning ideology that is responsible for the plight of the rural worker, the history of the province of Extremadura, where rural poverty is and was a social and economic phenomenon, is crucial to the understanding of all four texts whose stories are set in this province."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: This book offers an original perspective on the narrative in the film and the novel No Country for Old Men, it also gives a good account on the issue of fidelity that plays an important role in the analysis of the relationship between the film adaptation and its source text, observing whether the Coens have not eradicated the novel’s complex and allegorical essence. The narrative analysis in the book as well involves an observation of the narrator’s point-of-view and its reliability. Besides, the book undeniably proves that the relation of narrative time and narrative space is vital in the comparison of the film adapatation and its source text. The contents of the book may serve as a valuable source for aspiring students and researchers in the area of literary and film studies.

Book excerpt: The book takes as its theme the relationship between literature and the contemporary means of production and distribution collectively termed 'the media' - in particular, film and television. The intention of the book is to explore and evaluate the mutual opportunities and restrictions in this relationship. In the grammar of our culture there seems to be an accepted opinion that print is superior in terms of cultural production to film, radio or television, that to read a book is somehow a 'higher' cultural activity than seeing a play on television or seeing a film. By the same token, a novel is a 'superior' work of art to film or television. The longer perspective reveals that traditionally there always is a greater respect paid to the previous mode of literary production - poetry was superior to drama, poetic drama was superior to the novel, and film attained cult and classic status initially over television.

Book excerpt: "Some of the most memorable movies of Hollywood's Golden Age were based on novels that never received the acclaim they deserved. No-one who saw Rod Steiger in The Pawnbroker could forget the actor's wrenching performance but does anyone remember the author of the book on which the film was based? The same can be said of Jane Fonda in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? , Greta Garbo in Susan Lenox , and Humphrey Bogart in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre . This book retrieves these novels and re-evaluates the careers of the eight neglected novelists whose works inspired eight different directors ? among them Stanley Kubrick, Sidney Lumet, John Huston and Sidney Pollack. Each chapter offers detailed analysis on both the original text and the resulting movie. Taken together, the double examination of novel and film raises some important questions about the nature and problems of cinematic adaptation."--

Book excerpt: Eighteenth-Century Fiction on Screen offers an extensive introduction to cinematic representations of the eighteenth century, mostly derived from classic fiction of that period, and sheds light on the process of making prose fiction into film. The contributors provide a variety of theoretical and critical approaches to the process of bringing literary works to the screen. They consider a broad range of film and television adaptations, including several versions of Robinson Crusoe; three films of Moll Flanders; American, British, and French television adaptations of Gulliver's Travels, Clarissa, Tom Jones, and Jacques le fataliste; Wim Wender's film version of Goethe's Wilhelm Meister's Apprentice Years; the controversial film of Diderot's La Religieuese; and French and Anglo-American motion pictures based on Les Liaisons dangereuses among others. This book will appeal to students and scholars of literature and film alike.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: B, Université Toulouse II - Le Mirail (English department), course: Master 1, language: English, abstract: This paper examines one of the most popular nineteenth-century novel "Wuthering Heights" together with its film adaptation (Wuthering Heights), directed by Cocy Giedroyc, a Mammoth Screen production supported by the Screen Yorkshire Production Fund, 2008), in order to understand the differences between films and novels as modes of storytelling, by a close examination of both the structure of the novel and film, then I will provide analyses of two sequences; from then I will proceed will proceed with a close up on two of the female characters Catherine and Isabella and finally I will discuss the sense of cold and loneliness both in novel and film. Wuthering Heights, written between October 1845 and June 1846, by Emily Bronte is one of the main classic novels of English literature, together with Sense and Sensibility (Author Jane Austin) and Great Expectations (Author Charles Dickens), which were successfully transformed into films by British filmmakers. Cinematic adaptations often provoke debates about their fidelity, to the original; discussions about how the classic text has been transformed into film, whether adapted movies are spoiling the charm of the novel and thus ruining it, or, on the contrary, whether film has "rescued" the novel, making it seem more interesting and worth reading in a new historical context. Can a novel be successfully transformed into film without spoiling it? Or on the contrary we may consider novels cannot be replaced and by adapting them the films deprive spectators of their ability to imagine?

Book excerpt: From Hollywood classics like Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights to the 1990s wave of Jane Austen films, adaptations of the British Nineteenth-century novel have been sensationally popular.
