Book excerpt: The self-assembly of individual building blocks with different shapes into close packed ordered structures is prevalent in nature and has drawn much attention of human for long. The close packing of some simple shapes such as sphere and rods has been widely learned and established while the assembly of polyhedral structures is still unsolved and being studied with numerous efforts, of which tetrahedron is one with special interest. However, many previous researches only study the assembly of the building blocks with sizes either too big (tens or hundreds of nanometers) or too small (around one nanometer). Thus, we seek to obtain a size in between by using the newly emerged nano building blocks with precisely defined structures, persistent shapes and outstanding properties, e.g. Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (POSS). We can predict there to be distinctive difference in the self-assembly behavior and structure between the nano-sized molecules and the traditional ones. In this work, two novel claw-like C3v symmetric nano-molecules with different linkages were successfully synthesized by connecting 3 POSS nano-atoms to 1,3,5-Triphenyladmantane. The nano-molecules were carefully designed to ensure they possess enough shape persistent ability and 3-5 nm size, which fills the size gap between traditional small molecules and large colloidal particles. The crystals of the molecules were obtained via solvent evaporation method and the crystal structures would be explored. This work can not only provide us a new way of designing crystals with Nano-sized units but also help us to deepen our understanding of the relationship between molecular structure and crystal structure.

Book excerpt: Since De Gennes formally described the entities with distinct components in terms of both geometry and chemistry after the name of two-faced Roman God Janus, rapid development of researches on Janus Grains has been witnessed. Our group expanded the concept of Janus Grains to the molecular level, and synthesized "dumbbell-like" molecular Janus particles with precisely-defined chemical structures based on versatile nano building blocks, or so-called nanoatoms.1 POSS-based amphiphilic molecular Janus particles were reported to possess either three dimensional (3D) hierarchical structures2 or 2D ultra-thin nanocrystal structures3, depending on particular conditions that were thoroughly discussed in our previous work. Furthermore, we need to explore a possible strategy to manipulate the thickness of those preceding 2D nanocrystals. In this context, we present the synthesis of a series of sequence-specific linear giant molecules constructed from distinct POSS derivatives which may satisfy our desire for tuning the thickness of 2D nanocrystals. And this series of sequence-specific linear giant molecules possess the sequence-controlled primary structure, which indicates a promising strategy to manipulate sequence-controlled macromolecules.4

Book excerpt: Sol-Gel processing methods, first used historically for decorative and constructional materials, were extensively developed in the last century for applications such as glasses, ceramics, catalysts, coatings, composites and fibres. Today they are reaching their full potential, enabling the preparation of new generations of advanced materials not easily accessible by other methods yet using mild, low-energy conditions. The topic is therefore increasingly included in advanced undergraduate, MSc and PhD programmes in the areas of chemistry, physics and materials science. This concise introductory text, written at the advanced undergraduate/first-year postgraduate level, is also suitable as an introduction to the development, mechanisms, chemistry, characterisation methods and applications of the technique. It provides readers with an extensive yet concise grounding in the theory of each area of the subject and details the real and potential applications and the future prospects of sol-gel chemistry.

Book excerpt: ?? Giant molecules are important in our everyday life. But, as pointed out by the authors, they are also associated with a culture. What Bach did with the harpsichord, Kuhn and Flory did with polymers. We owe a lot of thanks to those who now make this music accessible ??Pierre-Gilles de GennesNobel Prize laureate in Physics(Foreword for the 1st Edition, March 1996)This book describes the basic facts, concepts and ideas of polymer physics in simple, yet scientifically accurate, terms. In both scientific and historic contexts, the book shows how the subject of polymers is fascinating, as it is behind most of the wonders of living cell machinery as well as most of the newly developed materials. No mathematics is used in the book beyond modest high school algebra and a bit of freshman calculus, yet very sophisticated concepts are introduced and explained, ranging from scaling and reptations to protein folding and evolution. The new edition includes an extended section on polymer preparation methods, discusses knots formed by molecular filaments, and presents new and updated materials on such contemporary topics as single molecule experiments with DNA or polymer properties of proteins and their roles in biological evolution.

Book excerpt: Mechanochemical Organic Synthesis is a comprehensive reference that not only synthesizes the current literature but also offers practical protocols that industrial and academic scientists can immediately put to use in their daily work. Increasing interest in green chemistry has led to the development of numerous environmentally-friendly methodologies for the synthesis of organic molecules of interest. Amongst the green methodologies drawing attention, mechanochemistry is emerging as a promising method to circumvent the use of toxic solvents and reagents as well as to increase energy efficiency. The development of synthetic strategies that require less, or the minimal, amount of energy to carry out a specific reaction with optimum productivity is of vital importance for large-scale industrial production. Experimental procedures at room temperature are the mildest reaction conditions (essentially required for many temperature-sensitive organic substrates as a key step in multi-step sequence reactions) and are the core of mechanochemical organic synthesis. This green synthetic method is now emerging in a very progressive manner and until now, there is no book that reviews the recent developments in this area. Features cutting-edge research in the field of mechanochemical organic synthesis for more sustainable reactions Integrates advances in green chemistry research into industrial applications and process development Focuses on designing techniques in organic synthesis directed toward mild reaction conditions Includes global coverage of mechanochemical synthetic protocols for the generation of organic compounds

Then I learned from a paper of his idea (gas interface reactions could be catalyzed electrochemically), which seemed quite marvelous; but I did not understand how it worked. Consequently, I decided to correspond with Professor Vayenas in Patras, Greece, to reach a better understanding of this concept. I think that my early papers (1946, 1947, and 1957), on the relationship between the work function of metal surfaces and electron transfer reactions thereat to particles in solution, held me in good stead to be receptive to what Vayenas told me. As the electrode potential changes, so of course, does the work function at the interface, and gas metal reactions there involve adsorbed particles which have bonding to the surface. Whether electron transfer is complete in such a case, or whether the effect is on the desorption of radicals, the work function determines the strength of their bonding, and if one varies the work function by varying the electrode potential, one can vary the reaction rate at the interface. I got the idea. After that, it has been smooth sailing. Dr. Vayenas wrote a seminal article in Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry, Number 29, and brought the field into the public eye. It has since grown and its usefulness in chemical catalytic reactions has been demonstrated and verified worldwide.
