Book excerpt: First published in 2011, this text provides citations to the core Holst literature. The volume is intended for students and researchers, as well as those seeking an introduction to Holst. The inclusion of materials for the non- specialist seems entirely appropriate as Holst devoted much of his career to teaching amateur musicians. The contents of this book presents a selective, annotated list of essential materials published through the end of 2009, although a very few exceptions were made for a limited number of post-2009 print and web resources.

Book excerpt: The patristic principle demands that theological quarrels be settled by resorting to the church fathers. This volume presents the first comprehensive reflexion on the historical evolution of the present crisis of this ancient theological principle. Focusing on the theory of the consensus quinquesaecularis, the author surveys the development of patristic authority from the 16th to the 20th centuries and relates it to other problems of the Church in modern times such as the crisis of tradition, the conflict between ecclesiastical authority and academic theology, and ecumenism. The concluding chapter tackles the question whether a renewal of the patristic principle is possible and feasible today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In Bremen als Brennpunkt reformierter Irenik, Leo van Santen demonstrates how Ludovicus Crocius’s irenical theology, meant to mediate between the Reformed and the Lutheran Churches, was instigated by the Bremen municipal authorities who had an interest in good relations with the Lutheran surrounding area. Van Santen bases himself on the life of Crocius (1586-1655). With his irenicism, however, in 1618-1619 as Bremen delegate at the Synod of Dordt, Crocius for the first time collided with the strict orthodoxy insisted upon by the Dutch Calvinists, which led to an ecclesiastical conflict in 1636. The correspondence that Crocius, as pro-rector of the Gymnasium Illustre, conducted on this subject with Reformed scholars such as Vossius in the Dutch Republic, testify to Bremen’s hitherto insufficiently recognized position in Europe’s early modern Reformed world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2003. 'All of my music is biographical' declared Sir Malcolm Arnold in an interview in 1991. Arnold's turbulent life has permeated his music to a greater degree than probably any other British composer as Paul Jackson reveals in this illuminating account. Interweaving biographical details with close analyses of Arnold's major works, particularly the nine symphonies, and drawing on sketch materials never previously examined, Jackson provides fascinating insights into Arnold's compositional process, and the ideas informing works such as the John Field Fantasy and the 7th Symphony. Extensive interviews with Arnold himself as well as with his family, friends and colleagues add further perspectives on his relationships with fellow composers and musicians, publishers, critics and family. A combination of joie de vivre and periods of depression and personal tragedy, Arnold's life has mirrored his music in its combination of seemingly disparate elements that make a compelling whole.
