Book excerpt: Pour simuler numériquement un écoulement compressible transitionnel décollé autour d'un profil d'aile ou d'un fuselage, la technique classique consiste à résoudre les équations de Navier-Stokes sur l'ensemble du domaine de calcul, alors que seule une petite partie de l'écoulement nécessite réellement ce niveau de modélisation. Il en résulte un surcoût prohibitif d'un point de vue industriel, doublé d'une incapacité à représenter simultanément les régions de couche limite laminaire, de transition et d'écoulement turbulent, surtout lorsque la position de zones transitionnelles est a priori inconnue. L'approche multizone, dans la lignée des méthodes de décomposition de domaine, a pour but de concilier l'amélioration de la précision des simulations et la diminution des coûts de calcul. Cette approche consiste à découper le domaine de calcul de manière judicieuse, et à adapter le modèle mathématique (Euler, couche limite, Navier-Stokes) et physique (écoulement laminaire, turbulent, turbulent décollé...) à la physique de l'écoulement dans chaque zone. Les frontières artificielles introduites entre les zones sont traitées par la méthode des caractéristiques. Pour l'écoulement autour d'un profil d'aile, trois zones sont définies et un processus alterne itératif est adopté pour obtenir la solution multizone. L'approche est validée sur des configurations d'écoulements laminaires et transitionnels.
