Book excerpt: "Chapter 1 shows that the windward slope of Barbados and its terraced morphology evolved principally by wave erosion during uplift and eustatic oscillation, rather than by biohermal growth. Chapter 2 describes the interplay of erosion and limestone deposition during eustatic oscillation over a span of 700,000 years. It represents the first comprehensive field and chronologic study to integrate marine erosion and deposition with tectonic uplift rates to determine emergence values and rates of the stratigraphic and evolutionary model. Chapter 3 describes the distributions, lithology, depositional environments, and ages of the limestone stratigraphic subunits for seven study areas in southeastern Barbados"--

Book excerpt: Until a century ago this coral island, strategically located 100 miles east of the other Lesser Antilles and blessed with fertile limestone soils, held commercial leadership in the Eastern Caribbean. Its growing population, now 235,000 or 1, 400 per square mile, puts it among the most densely settled political units in the world. Today, as for three centuries, sugar provides the bulk of its exports and sugar cane still occupies most of its arable land. However, tourism, merchandizing profits, remittances from overseas, and the beginning of an industrial economy, now supplement sugar as sources of income. Barbados is a medium-sized frog in a small pond. Its exports surpass those of all the British Windwards and Leewards put together although it has only half the population of those islands. Barbadians earn more and live better than neighboring islanders; they are bettereducated, more hard-working, and more thrifty. Their island is well cultivated, an almost English landscape plus palms. Book excerpt: The islands and seascapes gracing the Caribbean Sea have long been areas of interest and research for geographers and other scholars from around the world. The lands and waters of the Caribbean region have stimulated an extensive body of research and writing across the many fields of geography. This book collects, organizes, and presents as many of these scholarly publications as possible to aid in the teaching, study, and further scholarship of the geography of this area. Chapters are organized into the following categories: general works, cultural and social geography, economic geography, historical geography, physical geography, political geography, and urban geography. The types of publications noted include atlases, books, book chapters, articles, master’s theses, and doctoral dissertations. Entries in each chapter are arranged alphabetically by author’s last name. Where there is more than one publication per author, the earliest is listed first, and the rest are listed chronologically after the first entry. This volume is a convenient and useful collection of existing references on the geography of the Caribbean region that can assist teachers and students in both the study and research of the area.

Book excerpt: Tourism is an astonishingly complex phenomenon that is becoming an ever-greater part of life in today’s global world. This clear and engaging text introduces undergraduate students to this vast and diverse subject through the lens of geography, the only field with the breadth to consider all of the aspects, activities, and perspectives that constitute tourism. Indeed, geography and tourism have always been interconnected, and Velvet Nelson reinforces the relationship between them by using both human and physical geography to interpret all facets of tourism—economic, social, and environmental. She shows how geography provides the tools and concepts to consider both the positive and negative factors that affect tourists and destinations, as well as the effects tourism has on both peoples and places. Her real-world case studies, based both on research and on the experiences of tourists themselves, vividly illustrate key issues. This comprehensive, thematically organized introduction will enhance students’ understanding of geographic concepts and how they can be used as a way of viewing and understanding the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the author’s first hand field research, this book addresses the twin processes of urbanization and globalization as they affect the contemporary Caribbean region. One of the key aims of the book is to focus attention on the fact that contrary to popular perceptions, the Caribbean is highly urbanized. Indeed statistics show that the region is more highly urbanized than the world taken as a whole. In addition, the fact that the Caribbean region has always been affected by processes of globalization, in respect of its economy, polity and society, is central to the text. The chapters cover pressing topics such as urban change and the evolution of mini-metropolitan regions, the importance of the mercantile and plantopolis frameworks, tourism, post modernity and the urban nexus, economic change and the dual processes of global convergence and divergence, and the nature of the relationships existing between the state, the informal sector, housing and environmental conditions. In reality, it is shown that the development of tourism and enclave manufacturing is leading to new forms of urban concentration, and not spatial dispersal.
