Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Hydro-Electric Developments The interest which has been manifested by investors, capitalists and bankers in schemes for utilizing water powers has created a demand for a general treatment of the subject, which deals particularly with the commercial side of such enterprises. Many water powers have undoubtedly been developed without giving sufficient consideration to the subject or the principles involved, but enough developments have been made to furnish data which may be made use of in the future. It is therefore the object of this short discussion to indicate, as far as possible, the information which should be obtained in order to afford a definite basis for forming a decision as to the merits of any proposed undertaking. The idea is to treat the subject from a different point of view from the one usually taken and to avoid as far as possible a discussion of principles of engineering which have been very thoroughly worked out and treated by a number of writers of ability. Let us assume therefore that good engineering advice may be obtained and we may determine with fair accuracy the possibilities of utilizing the power for commercial purposes. The first information, therefore, which we desire to obtain is: What will be the cost of making the development? Download or read book Design of Hydroelectric Power Plants - Step by Step written by Geraldo Magela Pereira and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of a hydroelectric plant, along with an installation of transformation of potential energy of water into electricity, is an activity that is not standardized. Each new project is an interesting engineering challenge, and teams need to work in different conditions of each site, integrated to design a functional, economical and environmentally sustainable project. The development of a project, here understood as the plant itself, the reservoir, the maneuver substation and the associated transmission line, is a multidisciplinary activity that encompasses areas of civil engineering, geology, mechanical and electrical engineering, environmental engineering, economic engineering, construction and assembly, and the engineering of operation and maintenance of civil works and electromechanical equipment. The book is organized to facilitate the performance of professional life of the new generations of engineers who will join the Electric Sector, or in other sectors that demand the knowledge regarding hydraulic structures. The book is a simple manual providing the practical step-by-step procedure for designing hydroelectric plants, including legislation, with a general view of the project.

Book Synopsis Power from the North by : Caroline Desbiens
Download or read book Power from the North written by Caroline Desbiens and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-05-03 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, Hydro-Québec declared in a publicity campaign “We Are Hydro-Québécois.” The slogan symbolized the extent to which hydroelectric development in the North had come to both reflect and fuel French Canada’s aspirations. The slogan helped Quebecers relate to the province’s northern territory and to accept the exploitation of its resources. In Power from the North, Caroline Desbiens explores how this culture of hydroelectricity helped shape the landscape during the first phase of the James Bay hydroelectric project. Policy makers and citizens did not, she argues, view those who built the dams as mere workers – they saw them as pioneers in a previously uninhabited land now inscribed with the codes of culture and spectacle. This insightful work shows that if Quebec hopes to engage in truly sustainable resource development, all actors must bring an awareness of their cultural histories and visions of nature, North, and nation to the negotiating table.

Hydropower Economics uses various econometric measures to examine sustainable alternative energy sources. It kicks off by modeling hydropower, yes, but it does not end there. Forsund has extended his model to include thermal power and wind power, too – forms of alternative energy that are taking on an ever larger profile.
