Book excerpt: The classic novel of hope, redemption, and the indomitable human spirit, from beloved novelist George Eliot. In this heartwarming classic by George Eliot, a gentle linen weaver named Silas Marner is wrongly accused of a heinous theft actually committed by his best friend. Exiling himself to the rustic village of Raveloe, he becomes a lonely recluse. Ultimately, Marner finds redemption and spiritual rebirth through his unselfish love for an abandoned child who mysteriously appears one day in his isolated cottage. Somber, yet hopeful, Eliot’s realistic depiction of an irretrievable past, tempered with the magical elements of myth and fairy tale, remains timeless in its understanding of human nature and has been beloved for generations. With an Introduction by Frederick R. Karl and an Afterword by Kathryn Hughes

H. Mazaheri has attempted to reveal G. Eliot’s profound religious and spiritual quest by focusing on the short but powerful novel, Silas Marner. The critic believes that her thought in the area of religion and theology has not been appreciated enough by critics, and that a postmodern reading is necessary in order to understand it. So, through a close textual reading, the author shows not only the affinities G. Eliot had with Coleridge and Wordworth, already mentioned by others, but also with Schleiermacher and Kierkegaard. The novelist clearly distinguishes between religion and superstition: if she strongly rejects the latter, she believes in the reality and good aspects of the former. Indeed she demythologizes Christianity in a positive way, and implicitly offers a new definition of religion. On the other hand, although she admired and translated Feuerbach’s The Essence of Christianity, she differed from him as much as she did from Strauss, whom she also translated. This essay on Silas Marner proposes, thus, a new approach to G. Eliot’s thought, while stressing the qualities of her art, especially in the way she uses allegory, irony, and free indirect speech.

Book excerpt: Set in the early years of the 19th century, the novel tells the story of Silas Marner, a young weaver, member of a small Calvinist congregation in Lantern Yard, a slum street in Northern England. He is accused of stealing the congregation's funds while watching over the very ill deacon. Silas claims that he is being framed and accuses his best friend, William Dane, and believes that God will direct the process and establish the truth. However, people don't believe him and the woman Silas was to marry breaks their engagement and marries William instead. With his life shattered, his trust in God lost, and his heart broken, Silas leaves Lantern Yard and the city for a rural area where he is unknown. Marner travels south to the Midlands and settles near the rural village of Raveloe in Warwickshire where he lives isolated and alone, choosing to have only minimal contact with the residents beyond his work as a linen weaver. He devotes himself wholeheartedly to his craft and comes to adore the gold coins he earns and hoards from his weaving. But another theft happens and it changes his life again.

Book excerpt: This study explores the ways in which George Eliot's involvement with contemporary scientific theory affected the evolution of her fiction. Drawing on the work of such theorists as Comte, Spencer, Lewes, Bain, Carpenter, von Hartmann and Bernard, Dr Shuttleworth shows how, as Eliot moved from Adam Bede to Daniel Deronda, her conception of a conservative, static and hierarchical model of society gave way to a more dynamic model of social and psychological life.

Book excerpt: This Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Classic? includes a glossary and reader's notes to help the modern reader contend with Eliot?s subtle themes and language.Silas Marner, which first appeared in 1861, is a tale about life, love, and the need to belong. Accused of a crime he didn?t commit and unjustly forced from his home town, Silas lives a reclusive and godless life, finding love and companionship only in material objects. It will take the theft of his gold and the discovery of an abandoned infant to remind him of the importance of human relationships and faith.Mary Ann Evans, writing under her pen name of George Eliot, carefully weaves the interaction of plot and character, and, in so doing, depicts Silas Marner?s redemption and rebirth through his love and protection of the orphaned girl and the possibility of losing her. Throughout the book, Eliot also takes the opportunity to voice her feelings about industrialization, religion, and social class distinctions.
