Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes From the Journal of a Tourist, Vol. 2 Genoese, for defence against the Saracens, Barbary pi rates, and other enemies. The Bay of Spezzia is so completely land-locked as to make it a perfectly safe anchorage for Shipping the Italian navy, or nearly the whole of it, is now riding at anchor with numerous other ships of war of different nations, and a large fleet of merchant ships. The air is warm and summer-like, and the orange groves are laden with fruit. Beautiful roses and other flowers are in full bloom, and fill the air with their delightful perfumes. Rain is falling in torrents, and it is said that the storm ex tends along the whole coast, and is particularly violent be tween this place and Rome. A great inundation is said to be now doing terrible work in Pisa thirty persons have lost their lives, and the destruction of property is immense. I fear this will prevent our visit to Pisa, and that we shall be compelled to pass directly through to Leghorn. We found a very agreeable party of English and French ladies and gentlemen (all English speaking), at the table d'hote this evening, from whom we obtained much informa tion, as to Rome, with its sights and festivities, during the Christmas holidays and Holy Week. December 20t/i.-started at I for Leghorn by rail, our course lying parallel with the seashore and in sight of it much of the way. The mountain Slopes like those already traversed are terraced from bottom to top, presenting a beau tiful appearance and looking like an almost infinite number of galleries or tiers of gardens. We passed through many villages and saw numbers of the hillsides or peaks with many ruined castles, towers, and other buildings, some of them of great extent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of Foreign Travel I could not find my sparrow anywhere on deck this morning, and was told that quite likely, as often happens, he had flown too far from the steamer, and could not get back. There is only a moderate swell of the ocean, imparting no more than a slight motion to the huge steamer. After comparatively clearing away, the fog will gather with wonderful celerity, and the dismal fog-horn sounded all night, much to our disturbance, as our rooms are on the promenade-deck, with port-holes open, for it has come off warm. The sea roughened toward night, and the crests of the swells show white with foam all about. Still, the only motion of the steamer is a slow roll, just enough to affect a few of the most sensitive passengers. May 4. - Warm, with very little sea, and the fog quite gone. The run was four hundred and thirty-three miles, so that, under the most favorable circumstances, the steamer is not doing as well as was expected. The machinery is said not to be working well at all points. Now, at 4 p.m., the sun is out almost for the first time since the first half day, and the sky is not all clear from clouds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of My Journey Round the World It needs some apology to add one more book to the library already published about journeys round the world; and could I not plead the excuse of having been persuaded to stray from the commendable paths of 'masterly inactivity, ' it certainly would have never been written. But this is not intended to be a volume of thrilling adventures or of tales profusely drawing upon the imagination; it is rather a volume of fact, briefly describing things as they exist, and its aim (if not too great a presumption) is to hint at just so much information as may entice the reader into following up any fancy in some larger work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of Travel and Life: By Two Ladies Misses Mendell and Hosmer What! we book pedlers write a book? Who ever heard the like! We, writers? Ah! we fear our friends, in their fondness, are too hopeful when they urge us to publish a book. And such a book! The world pictured just as we saw it - good and bad! Bad people will call it downright impudence, to take their likeness, and then carry it to them to buy. They'll make up wry faces, and say it's a caricature. Yes, yes, we did say we were frank and independent; thought it a right and duty to tell people of their faults; but that was in our happy moods, when we couldn't see any. But to be actually telling them! We tremble when we think of it. What shall we do? Let us remember the good people we met. They'll smile at their picture - turn to the world, and pronounce us charming! Reasons? Reasons, do you ask, why we have written a book? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daily Notes of a Trip Around the World The notes about India were written in India; every reference to the sea on ships - the writing was done every day as the journey progressed, and sent back to the newspaper Of which I was editor and publisher, as my part Of the daily work. The journey actually began October 26, 1905, and ended March 10, 1906; but travel letters never grow Old, if reason ably well done in the first place. The many commendations mine have received have resulted in this new edition. Original publication was in two volumes, usually objectionable to readers, and this fault has been over come by careful revision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Wanderer's Notes, Vol. 2 of 2 Early in the month of June, 1874, one Samuel Bergmann and five other "representatives of the Jewish community" of Bakau, an important provincial town in Moldavia, addressed a letter to Sir Francis A. Goldsmid, setting forth the heavy losses caused to their co-religion-aries by the oppressive effect of the so-called "Liquor Law," passed by the Roumanian Chambers during the previous winter, and enforced with extreme rigour by Prince Charles's Government, then presided over by M. Lascar Catargi. This letter, accusing the Roumanian authorities of sanctioning a systematic and cruel persecution of his Highness's Israelitish subjects, was transmitted by its recipient to the Editor of The Daily Telegraph, and obtained publicity in the columns of that journal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Wanderer's Notes, Vol. 1 of 2 Such were the conditions in which I passed some thirteen years of my life. Per mare, per terras from one end of Europe to another, and across the sea to Afric's burning sands, sometimes soldiering, sometimes eagerly searching for political mare's-nests, sometimes charged with a mere roving commission of inspection and inquiry, I wandered, taking stock of what I saw and heard, and jotting down the more striking incidents of my journeys.
