December 20t/i.-started at I for Leghorn by rail, our course lying parallel with the seashore and in sight of it much of the way. The mountain Slopes like those already traversed are terraced from bottom to top, presenting a beau tiful appearance and looking like an almost infinite number of galleries or tiers of gardens. We passed through many villages and saw numbers of the hillsides or peaks with many ruined castles, towers, and other buildings, some of them of great extent. The run was four hundred and thirty-three miles, so that, under the most favorable circumstances, the steamer is not doing as well as was expected. The machinery is said not to be working well at all points. Now, at 4 p.m., the sun is out almost for the first time since the first half day, and the sky is not all clear from clouds.
