Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selling Earth observation satellites on their abilities to predict and limit adverse environmental change, politicians, business leaders, the media, and technology enthusiasts have spent sixty years arguing that space exploration can create a more peaceful, prosperous world. Capitalist states have also socialized the risk and privatized the profits of the commercial space industry by convincing taxpayers to fund surveillance technologies as necessary components of sovereignty, freedom, and democracy. Jocelyn Wills’s Tug of War reminds us that colonizing the cosmos has not only accelerated the arms race but also encouraged government contractors to compete for the military and commercial spoils of surveillance. Although Canadians prefer to celebrate their role as purveyors of peaceful space applications, Canada has played a pivotal part in the expansion of neoliberal policies and surveillance networks that now encircle the globe, primarily as a political ally of the United States and component supplier for its military-industrial complex. Tracing the forty-five-year history of Canada’s largest space company – MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) – through the lens of surveillance studies and a trove of oral history transcripts, government documents, trade journals, and other sources, Wills places capitalism’s imperial ambitions squarely at the centre of Canada-US relations and the privatization of the Canadian political economy. Tug of War confronts the mythic lure of technological progress and the ways in which those who profess little interest in war rationalize their leap into military contracting by avoiding the moral and political implications of their work.

It highlights Turner’s vision for the country and tallies the political price he paid when he deviated from the Trudeau legacy on matters such as language rights, social spending, and Quebec. Book excerpt: "This study examines future directions and U.S. policy options in the general areas of naval and regional arms control. It reviews the Cold War history in both areas, the changes that have taken place in recent years, and the implications of the dissolution of the Soviet Union on the formulation and debate of naval and regional issues in the post 1991 decate. It examines the new Russian agenda for "cooperative security at sea," growing pressures to "internationalize" naval operations and activities, the emergence and security significance of the growth of regional navies, and varying proposals for regional arms control and cooperation that might impact on naval operations. It concludes with an examination of the implications of these various developments for U.S. policy, and a review of the principal policy options."--Report documention page

Download or read book The Oriental Question written by Patricia E. Roy and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patricia E. Roy is the winner of the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award, Canadian Historical Association. Patricia Roy's latest book, The Oriental Question, continues her study into why British Columbians -- and many Canadians from outside the province -- were historically so opposed to Asian immigration. Drawing on contemporary press and government reports and individual correspondence and memoirs, Roy shows how British Columbians consolidated a "white man's province" from 1914 to 1941 by securing a virtual end to Asian immigration and placing stringent legal restrictions on Asian competition in the major industries of lumber and fishing. While its emphasis is on political action and politicians, the book also examines the popular pressure for such practices and gives some attention to the reactions of those most affected: the province's Chinese and Japanese residents. It is a critical investigation of a troubling period in Canadian history.

Book excerpt: This first volume of a two-volume study concentrates on the geopolitical and economic transformation of the Asia-Pacific region. It focuses on the relationship between the decline of ideological bipolarity and dissolution of Cold War alliances on the one hand, and the rapid industrialization of East Asia and the tensions generated by the shifts in the global and regional balance of economic interests on the other hand. Special attention is paid to the three major powers (the US, China, and Japan), as well as small and middle powers such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Canada. For scholars, researchers, and policy makers involved in the region's politics and economy. Camilleri teaches international relations at La Trobe University, Australia.
