Download or read book A Zulu-English Dictionary written by Alfred T. Bryant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Zulu-English Dictionary: With Notes on Pronunciation, a Revised Orthography and Derivations and Cognate Words From Many Languages; Including Also a Vocabulary of Hlonipa Words, Tribal-Names, Etc., Synopsis of Zulu Grammar and a Concise History of the Zulu People I regret that I am unable to attest to the accuracy of many of the Native names for birds. Owing to the similarity in colour of so many separated species, to the changing of the plumage according to different seasons, and to the fact of the male birds being frequently so unlike the females, the Natives have become consider ably confused in their nomenclature, so that it has often been impossible for me to discover the exact bird for which any particular name has been coined. Careful and extensive enquiries have in every case been made, oftentimes only to make the con fusion worse confounded. Howbeit, wherever I have ventured to insert a scientific name, I have confidence that it will generally be found accurately affixed. Some corrections, however, based on later investigations, will be found in the Appendix. The same remark applies also to the Natal names for fishes, as well as to words denoting the particular colour-markings and the shape of horns of cattle. The names of fishes, as the sign (n) will show, are not pure Zulu words, being mainly con fined to the few fish-eating Natives residing along the Natal coast, main y about Dur ban, and have probably been invented by them in quite recent times, since they have adopted the fish-eating habit, which the Zulus proper have not. Book Synopsis Dictionary of the Tebele Shuna Languages by : W. A. Elliott
Download or read book Dictionary of the Tebele Shuna Languages written by W. A. Elliott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of the Tebele Shuna Languages: With Illustrative Sentences and Some Grammatical Notes In the sentences at the end of the volume and in the Notes on Grammar will be found a few examples of dialect differences, but generally no note has been taken of these on account of inadequate knowledge. The aid of all settlers in Southern Zambesia is requested in the preparation of a really satisfactory dictionary of the language of the Mashuna. Notes in the margin of the vocabularies on any peculiarities of speech, observed and examined with care, would be of great value. Attention may be called especially to the examination of new words, of new meanings and forms of already recorded words, of variations in prefixes of nouns from those here set forth, of the use of double prefixes, of the past and perfect tenses indicative of the verb, and generally the moods and tenses, and idiomatic expressions, in which the Shuna language is believed to be very rich. Interleaved copies of this Dictionary may be obtained from Messrs. Whiteley Walker. A valuable foundation in grammar has already been laid by Fr. Hartmann. The orthography adopted here is different in some respects from that used by Fr. Hartmann; but after fourteen years' residence in Matebele Land, I had fixed my Spelling before his was printed, and I see no reason to make alteration now. Different types have been used for the two languages, clarendon for the Tebele, and small capitals for the Shuna, throughout the book. This, it is hoped, will conduce to clearness. The apposition of Tebele and Shuna words in Vocabulary I. Does not imply any correspondence of meaning in those words. Book Synopsis Language Matters in Contemporary Zimbabwe by : Collen Sabao
Download or read book Language Matters in Contemporary Zimbabwe written by Collen Sabao and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-17 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speaking to a broader global preoccupation with the state of languages and language development, this book considers issues surrounding the diverse languages, linguistic communities, and cultures of Zimbabwe. Reflecting on Shona, Xitsonga, Sotho, Xhosa, Tjwao, Nambya, IsiNdebele, Nyanja, Tshivenda, English and Braille, the book uncovers both the internal and external factors that impact language structures, language use and language ideologies across the country. The book considers how colonial legacies and contemporary language domination and minoritisation have led to language endangerment. It considers the fate of communities whose languages are marginalised and, in the process, poses questions on what can and should be done to preserve Zimbabwean languages. The authors' offerings range across subjects as diverse as music, linguistic innovation, education, human rights, literature, language politics and language policy, in order to build a rich and nuanced picture of language matters in the country. Coming at a critical moment of increasing mobility, migration, cultural plurality and globalisation, this book will be an important resource for researchers across African literature, linguistics, communication, policy and politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing an innovative methodological toolkit, Doing Conceptual History in Africa provides a refreshingly broad and interdisciplinary approach to African historical studies. The studies assembled here focus on the complex role of language in Africa’s historical development, with a particular emphasis on pragmatics and semantics. From precolonial dynamics of wealth and poverty to the conceptual foundations of nationalist movements, each contribution strikes a balance between the local and the global, engaging with a distinctively African intellectual tradition while analyzing the regional and global contexts in which categories like “work,” “marriage,” and “land” take shape.
