Book excerpt: Walk into Happy Joe's in Bettendorf, Iowa, for their lunch buffet, and chances are good that you might find me there, sitting down at my favorite round table, enjoying a slice of the taco pizza I created and made famous. I will sit there for hours, talking to customers, telling jokes, and waiting for children to come by. Any child passing me will be rewarded with a wooden nickel, good for a scoop of ice cream or bowl of frozen 'Joegurt, ' and that child will walk away standing a little taller, a little more confident in himself, and know, without a doubt, that they are a pretty special kid. Because Happy Joe said so. I am not only living proof of the American dream but proof that the American dream can become a reality for any one of us. This is my story. And yours. Happy Joe loves people, and it shows. He loves to have a good time and make people laugh, and that's just what his book does. You're sure to love these feel-good stories about one hard-working, good-natured man and his endeavors in business and in the business of making people happy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When opportunity knocked, Joe Tiller busted the door down. Tiller became a major college head football coach somewhat late in his career. He was hired as the head coach at Wyoming just 12 days after his 48th birthday and became the head coach at Purdue two weeks before his 54th birthday. A disciple of the wide-open offenses used in the former Western Athletic Conference, Tiller’s Wyoming teams enjoyed great success in what he fondly refers to as the "Wacky WAC." After leaving the Cowboys for Purdue, some coaches insisted that his one-back, spread offense wouldn’t fly in the Big Ten Conference, with its physical, smash-mouth style of play. Instead, Tiller’s fast-breaking offense, now nicknamed "basketball on grass," took the Big Ten by storm. Before Tiller came aboard, Purdue had endured 12-consecutive losing seasons. But under Tiller, the Boilermakers have enjoyed arguably their most successful winning stretch ever. Tiller’s first eight teams went to bowl games, including the Rose Bowl. Before becoming a head coach, Tiller had served as an assistant at Montana State (his alma mater), Washington State, Purdue and Wyoming. He also spent nine years in Canada with Calgary of the CFL as an assistant coach, interim head coach, and in the front office—where he was responsible for booking rock star Alice Cooper and evangelist Billy Graham for appearances at McMahon Stadium, home of the Stampeders. In many ways, Tiller is a typical who has spent most of his life in the conservative Midwest and the open spaces of the western United States. A regular Joe, Tiller’s laid-back style, wry sense of humor and, of course, winning ways has made him a hit with Purdue players and fans alike.

Book excerpt: “What is happening to my life?” Have you ever honestly asked yourself that question? As young boys, we dreamed of being pilots, firefighters, doctors, and cowboys. Now we’re older, with a wonderful wife and kids, as well as a mortgage, a minivan, and a fulfilling but not-so-glamorous job. What happened? All the dreams that once inspired us have evaporated into traffic jams, computer screens, bills, and deadlines. Why is life so ordinary? If you think your life is nothing special, take a look at it through God’s eyes. The revealing truth is that God chooses “ordinary,” faithful men to do His most important work—regular guys like Peter the fisherman, David the shepherd, Stephen the waiter, Gideon the farmer, Paul the tentmaker, and even Jesus the carpenter. In this engaging book, Troy Meeder blends stories about biblical characters and contemporary men to show that an “average-Joe” life, an “ordinary” existence, shapes a man’s integrity, moral stability, resolve, and strength. The world desperately needs an army of “average Joes.” Like you. “Troy Meeder’s heart-felt accounts from both his own personal experience and those of friends and family touch a raw nerve in your soul…. Average Joe reminds us that living a life focused on faith, family, and friends is what makes a man exceptional.” —Rick Wiggers, average Joe and account manager Includes a study guide for use by men’s groups.

Book excerpt: Most of us can’t make it through morning without our cup (or cups) of joe, and we’re not alone. Coffee is a global beverage: it’s grown commercially on four continents and consumed enthusiastically on all seven—and there is even an Italian espresso machine on the International Space Station. Coffee’s journey has taken it from the forests of Ethiopia to the fincas of Latin America, from Ottoman coffee houses to “Third Wave” cafés, and from the simple coffee pot to the capsule machine. In Coffee: A Global History, Jonathan Morris explains both how the world acquired a taste for this humble bean, and why the beverage tastes so differently throughout the world. Sifting through the grounds of coffee history, Morris discusses the diverse cast of caffeinated characters who drank coffee, why and where they did so, as well as how it was prepared and what it tasted like. He identifies the regions and ways in which coffee has been grown, who worked the farms and who owned them, and how the beans were processed, traded, and transported. Morris also explores the businesses behind coffee—the brokers, roasters, and machine manufacturers—and dissects the geopolitics linking producers to consumers. Written in a style as invigorating as that first cup of Java, and featuring fantastic recipes, images, stories, and surprising facts, Coffee will fascinate foodies, food historians, baristas, and the many people who regard this ancient brew as a staple of modern life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have toyed and struggled with the thought of compiling this book for a long time; almost 35 years, in fact. Since graduating from West Point in 1974, I have visited over forty countries in my military and business career. Everywhere I've been I have looked for articles or stories that I could include in this book. Many short stories came from friends and sources marked -Unknown.' This book is dedicated to young people everywhere and written for their benefit. I realize that many young people today would rather buy a CD or DVD rather than a guidebook or an owner's manual- a book about how to improve their lives from just an average Joe. Some young people will only get this book if a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or probation officer gives it to them as a gift. I hope it is a gift worth keeping and sharing. Today, young people struggle with finding good examples of role models. My first role model was David Cortez while attending Rhodes Junior High School in San Antonio, Texas. David was a ninth grader and our Student Council President. He helped me with my successful political' campaign to be the next Student Council Secretary. I thought David walked on water.' David came from a strong family. He was smart, athletic, and good-looking. He had a beautiful girlfriend. David's story has a sad ending. He went on to Jefferson High, where he also excelled. He married his girlfriend- the girl of his dreams. A few years later, she tragically died in a car accident. Not much later in life, David, still a widower, died of a mysterious illness, leaving behind two young daughters. Parents should be their own kids' role models, but sometimes we, too, fall short of setting the good example for our kids. Parents lose credibility and respect because, from their kids' perspective, it seems like we were never young and rebellious. HELLO!!! We were. It is hard to believe, but we were and it was tough back then, too. It may actually be harder now in many ways- more distractions, more toys,' more peer pressure, more drugs, more gang violence, more graffiti, more sexual promiscuity, more TV, more video games and cyberspace but less family interaction and influence. Teachers, who genuinely care about their students' future success, are also rare. Teachers can be excellent role models and I applaud anyone who goes into this most honorable profession. In the business world, prudence is ignored and now takes a backseat to personal gain at any cost, recklessness, corruption and greed in some of our largest banks and corporations. In politics, the candidates tell the electorate what's popular rhetoric: who can be against better healthcare for all, better education for our children, and a strong defense. Once elected or defeated they find it difficult to work with the opposition for the benefit of our communities and nation. Today's politicians are no longer statesmen but socialists' bent on ridiculous spending programs and bailouts of mismanaged banks, companies and corrupt governments around the world at an exorbitant cost to American taxpayers. Having said all this, I am still optimistic about our country and about many of our youth and their positive impact on our society and our world. I wish I could say that I am optimistic about all of them, but unfortunately, it will be just a few of them that will make a difference. But these few will be the leaders of tomorrow, the peacemakers, the inventors, the farmers, the space explorers, the scientists, the teachers and the caregivers that will make all the difference in our world. Their answers to our world's problems and challenges will come from within- from a strong sense of leadership, character and responsibility, self-discipline; and respect for self, the unborn, the elderly, religious freedoms, strong families, authority and the environment. This book attempts to inspire & motivate more of to

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea was deceptively simple: New York Times bestselling author A.J. Jacobs decided to thank every single person involved in producing his morning cup of coffee. The resulting journey takes him across the globe, transforms his life, and reveals secrets about how gratitude can make us all happier, more generous, and more connected. Author A.J. Jacobs discovers that his coffee—and every other item in our lives—would not be possible without hundreds of people we usually take for granted: farmers, chemists, artists, presidents, truckers, mechanics, biologists, miners, smugglers, and goatherds. By thanking these people face to face, Jacobs finds some much-needed brightness in his life. Gratitude does not come naturally to Jacobs—his disposition is more Larry David than Tom Hanks—but he sets off on the journey on a dare from his son. And by the end, it’s clear to him that scientific research on gratitude is true. Gratitude’s benefits are legion: It improves compassion, heals your body, and helps battle depression. Jacobs gleans wisdom from vivid characters all over the globe, including the Minnesota miners who extract the iron that makes the steel used in coffee roasters, to the Madison Avenue marketers who captured his wandering attention for a moment, to the farmers in Colombia. Along the way, Jacobs provides wonderful insights and useful tips, from how to focus on the hundreds of things that go right every day instead of the few that go wrong. And how our culture overemphasizes the individual over the team. And how to practice the art of “savoring meditation” and fall asleep at night. Thanks a Thousand is a reminder of the amazing interconnectedness of our world. It shows us how much we take for granted. It teaches us how gratitude can make our lives happier, kinder, and more impactful. And it will inspire us to follow our own “Gratitude Trails.”
