Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling classic set amid the mountains and streams of early twentieth-century Montana, “as beautiful as anything in Thoreau or Hemingway” (Chicago Tribune). When Norman Maclean sent the manuscript of A River Runs Through It and Other Stories to New York publishers, he received a slew of rejections. One editor, so the story goes, replied, “it has trees in it.” Today, the title novella is recognized as one of the great American tales of the twentieth century, and Maclean as one of the most beloved writers of our time. The finely distilled product of a long life of often surprising rapture—for fly-fishing, for the woods, for the interlocked beauty of life and art—A River Runs Through It has established itself as a classic of the American West filled with beautiful prose and understated emotional insights. Based on Maclean’s own experiences as a young man, the book’s two novellas and short story are set in the small towns and mountains of western Montana. It is a world populated with drunks, loggers, card sharks, and whores, but also one rich in the pleasures of fly-fishing, logging, cribbage, and family. By turns raunchy and elegiac, these superb tales express, in Maclean’s own words, “a little of the love I have for the earth as it goes by.” “Maclean’s book—acerbic, laconic, deadpan—rings out of a rich American tradition that includes Mark Twain, Kin Hubbard, Richard Bissell, Jean Shepherd, and Nelson Algren.” —New York Times Book Review Includes a new foreword by Robert Redford, director of the Academy Award–winning film adaptation

Book excerpt: "A sweet story that could be used as a springboard to discussion of the pitfalls of making snap judgments about pets — or people." — School Library Journal Norman the goldfish isn’t what this little boy had in mind. He wanted a different kind of pet — one that could run and catch, or chase string and climb trees, a soft furry pet to sleep on his bed at night. Definitely not Norman. But when he tries to trade Norman for a "good pet," things don’t go as he planned. Could it be that Norman is a better pet than he thought? With wry humor and lighthearted affection, author Kelly Bennett and illustrator Noah Z. Jones tell an unexpected — and positively fishy — tale about finding the good in something you didn’t know you wanted.

Book excerpt: This very large 465 page book is actually 2 separate but closely related books bound together as one — an inspirational novel and a thought-provoking philosophy book. Together they tell the story of a bold and visionary group of people creating a highly advanced prototype community and way of life based upon applying a philosophy that believes in human potential rather than supernatural forces, helps individuals self-actualize, promotes values and responsibility for SELF, SOCIETY, & ENVIRONMENT; and creates harmonious communities in which human potential flourishes. This results in happy people doing great things and achieving a tremendous sense of enjoyment and accomplishment in the process (something we all seek). As the story unfolds, a bright progressive group of people in Colorado adopt this new philosophy, become part of the Potentialist Movement, and focus on how to fund and develop this highly advanced community. To meet the challenge, the founder (Freeman Valor Smith) convinces the Hollywood producer (Steven Spielman) that the story would make a good film, thus ingeniously getting the producer to make the development of the project possible by funding its construction as part of the cost of production. So the project gets underway. But the powerful editor of the local newspaper (Norman Sully) has a deep grudge against the founder and plans to totally disrupt the group's efforts — so he hires an attractive undercover reporter (Serene St. Haven) to infiltrate the group and dig up as much dirt as possible. But a romance ensues between the reporter and the founder that changes the situation dramatically. So the editor takes drastic measures on his own to sabotage the project. What results is an intricate web of romance, treachery, intrigue, and inspiration. With great courage, this resourceful group of Potentialists overcomes all obstacles and a BOLD NEW WORLD is created which shows what people with the right values in the right environment can accomplish.

Book excerpt: You haven't read anything until you have read “Norman's Revenge” yet. Psycho touched on the subject of love and betrayal that resulted in murder, Bates Motel was too delicate. Norman is sitting on the bed watching his mother get undressed. No, Norman's Revenge goes much deeper than that. In Norman's Revenge Norman and his mother actually have sex. This is a story of lust, love, betrayal murder and revenge. The book starts out with Norma in the hospital having her baby boy. Norma's first pregnancy is as a result of rape. Norma's father raped Norma repeatedly ever since she was a little girl. After Norma's mother died from head wounds inflicted on her by Norma's father, Norma was the beneficiary of the abuse. When Norma got pregnant by her father, after being raped by her father for the umpteenth time, she had her first son she decided she wasn't going to take her father's crap any more. Norma knew her father didn't care anything about her and Norma just figured her father wouldn't care a thing about her son either. He used to care about the hotel but he didn't seem to care about that anymore. He just drank himself into a drunken stupor morning, noon and night. But just as expected when Norma comes home from the hospital after giving birth to Norman, her father rapes her again. As a result of this rape Norma is pregnant again. This has to stop, Norma thought. And it did. Norman grows up wanting to be left alone. He's quiet and soft spoken. Quite the opposite of his loud mouthed, demanding mother. Norman's little brother Nick is also quiet and minds his own business. After a series of incidents to Norman beyond Norman's control Norman lets people know he’s not a pushover anymore. Enough is enough. Now is the time for Norman to prove he is not what his mother turned out to be or tried to turn him into. Now is the time for Norman to get revenge on everybody and anybody who hurt, used and abused him, including his beloved mother.

Lucas was the Navy front line combat surgeon who performed a double amputation in Vietnam in order to save the man's life. Gangrene had set in while he was dragging his badly wounded body back toward friendly lines after setting off a land mine in enemy held territory-- After stalking the doctor for several years the man, Leonard Glover, sees the perfect opportunity to get his revenge. He will kill the doctor as he crosses the finish line at the Honolulu Marathon. Lucas is now an orthopedic surgeon in San Jose California with a fine practice, and has his best friend stationed in the vicinity, Marine Lieutenant Colonel Paul Dugan. Together they attempt to determine who the person was that apparently attempted to run Harry down while on a training run, and who was making mysterious dead line, late night phone calls to the Lucas residence. In Honolulu, marathon officials are receiving anonymous death threats to an unknown participant, and Police Lieutenant Danny Kemakoma is in charge of trying to sort it all out.

Book excerpt: A lifetime of candid reflections from physicist Freeman Dyson, “an acute observer of personality and human foibles” (New York Times Book Review). Written between 1940 and the late 1970s, the postwar recollections of renowned physicist Freeman Dyson have been celebrated as an historic portrait of modern science and its greatest players, including Robert Oppenheimer, Richard Feynman, Stephen Hawking, and Hans Bethe. Chronicling the stories of those who were engaged in solving some of the most challenging quandaries of twentieth-century physics, Dyson lends acute insight and profound observations to a life’s work spent chasing what Einstein called those “deep mysteries that Nature intends to keep for herself.” Whether reflecting on the drama of World War II, the moral dilemmas of nuclear development, the challenges of the space program, or the demands of raising six children, Dyson’s annotated letters reveal the voice of one “more creative than almost anyone else of his generation” (Kip Thorne). An illuminating work in these trying times, Maker of Patterns is an eyewitness account of the scientific discoveries that define our modern age.

Book excerpt: "We talk of good luck and bad luck. We even wear, some of us, good luck charms and we tend to select certain lucky numbers if we enter a raffle. No, Norman, you can't tell me that we don't acknowledge the existence of something we call luck." The world, indeed the Universe, is surrounded by intangible energies of which man has, at present, only the vaguest notions. Electricity is such a force. Magnetism, gravitation . . . all once-unsuspected natural forces, now known for the realities they are. And so why not luck? And once the possibility of luck being an actual force is recognised the next step is obvious - a machine to harness its forces. But if one man can attract the good luck, someone, somewhere is due for bad luck. When the machine falls into the wrong hands, the inventors begin to wish they'd stuck to rabbits' feet and black cats . . .
