Download or read book Mission Station Christianity written by Ingie Hovland and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mission Station Christianity, Ingie Hovland presents an anthropological history of the ideas and practices that evolved among Norwegian missionaries in nineteenth-century colonial Natal and Zululand (Southern Africa). She examines how their mission station spaces influenced their daily Christianity, and vice versa, drawing on the anthropology of Christianity. Words and objects, missionary bodies, problematic converts, and the utopian imagination are discussed, as well as how the Zulus made use of (and ignored) the stations. The majority of the Norwegian missionaries had become theological cheerleaders of British colonialism by the 1880s, and Ingie Hovland argues that this was made possible by the everyday patterns of Christianity they had set up and become familiar with on the mission stations since the 1850s.

Book excerpt: "At a strategic time in South Africa's history, the Christian history which is absolutely basic to all developments, is presented in a comprehensive and objective way. Too little attention is given to the influence of religion in socio-political accounts. This is a creative and much-needed contribution to scholarship and general knowledge. . . . An outstanding work."--Dean S. Gilliland, Fuller Theological Seminary

Book Synopsis History through Narratives of Education in Africa by :
Download or read book History through Narratives of Education in Africa written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-04-18 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who were the actors involved in colonial and post-independence education in Africa? This book on the history of education in Africa gives a special attention to narratives of marginalized voices. With this original approach and cases from ten countries involving four colonial powers it constitutes a dynamic and rich contribution to the field. The authors have searched for narratives of education 'from below' through oral interviews, autobiographies, films and undiscovered archival sources. Throughout the book, educational settings are approached as social spaces where both contact and separtation between colonisers and colonised are constructed through social interaction, negotiations, and struggles. Contributors include Antónia Barreto, Lars Folke Berge, Clara Carvalho, Charlotte Courreye, Pierre-Éric Fageol, Frédéric Garan, Esther Ginestet, Pedro Goulart, Pierre Guidi, Lydia Hadj-Ahmed, Kalpana Hiralal, Mamaye Idriss, Mihary Jaofeno, Raoul Kahuma, Rehana Thembeka Odendaal, Roland Rakotovao, Maria da Luz Ramos, Ellen Vea Rosnes, Caterina Scalvedi, Eva Van de Velde, Pieter Verstraete.
Book Synopsis Nils Astrup's 1889 Trek Translated by : Frederick Hale
Download or read book Nils Astrup's 1889 Trek Translated written by Frederick Hale and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-26 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the long-awaited, English translation and edition of Nils Astrup’s account of his 1889 trek from the British colony of Natal through Zululand and Swaziland to Portuguese East Africa. Based on a diary which Astrup kept while travelling, his book was published in Norwegian as En Missionsreise til Limpopo gjennem Zululand, Swaziland og Tongaland ind i Riget Umgaza in 1891. This three-month excursion was undertaken to explore possibilities for expanding the geographical scope of Norwegian Lutheran missionary endeavours among the various Nguni-speaking peoples of south-eastern Africa. The excursion took place at a critical historical juncture when the British Empire, Portuguese East Africa, and the South African Republic were vying for economic influence in a rapidly changing region of Africa. The erudite Astrup recorded his observations about a broad spectrum of topics, among them the impact of colonialism on indigenous Africans, tensions between colonising powers, itinerant Indian traders, African migratory labour, the extension of railways, and interracial marriage.
