Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina School Library Handbook A most important ability in school and in life is effective reading. Reading is definitely and closely related to the school library program. With the newer methods Of teaching it is necessary that the library be well organized, well equipped and well administered if it is to be effective in child development. With these needs in mind this bulletin has been prepared with 'the hope that it will be helpful to both the trained and the un trained librarian. Its contents deal with the Simple everyday procedures Of school library organization and administration. It is designed to stimulate a greater usefulness Of library materials, for the library is Of little value unless the book collection is read. Problems which come frequently to the State Superintendent Of Public Instruction have been used as a basis for the preparation Of material to be included here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standards for the Elementary Schools of North Carolina, 1926-27 For a long time there has been a feeling in North Carolina that there should be a clear statement of the minimum conditions under which standard instruction in the elementary schools can be given. The move ment for the elimination of the one-teacher school, by means of con solidation and transportation, created a need for such a statement. The new school code, which requires the county board of education to prepare a county-wide plan of organization before going further with any kind of consolidation, has greatly accentuated the need for such a statement of standards; because the plan of organization adopted now and provided with a system of permanent buildings will probably fix the type of school in North Carolina for the next generation. The State Department of Education is trying to answer with this bulletin this insistent demand from the field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Carolina Teacher We autocrats of the school-room should each keep a skull upon the magisterial desk as a reminder of our own mortality. Teachers, look well to your own conduct, whether consciously or not, you are influencing the future generation for weal or for woe. You cannot shirk the responsibility, you cannot plead innocent when the final day of reckoning comes, when you must "give an account of the deeds done in the body." Be you saint or sinner, you will be brought to account. Parents have put upon you a very serious and solemn responsibility. Whether the parent be Christian or Mohammedan, Jew, Gentile or Pagan, it matters not. Whether they be Atheists or Polytheists, it matters not. You must influence the pupils for good and not for evil. You must so conduct yourselves that your pupils will feel that to act dishonorably or falsely wall incur your displeasure. Under all circumstances "be just and fear not." Your every act and word is weighed and has an effect little dreamed of by the careless teacher. Though frequently guilty of acts of injustice and cruelty among themselves, school-boys are quick to note the same in their intercourse with you, and on no account will they consider it just to be treated by you as they treat fellow-pupils. They look upon you as a superior being, and expect mercy whenever they are brought to trial. However intellectual you may be, however learned and wise in text-books, however gifted in language or mathematics, your influence for good upon your pupils may all be lost if you do not know how to manage cases of discipline. Whether you have the feeling in your heart or not, no child should ever learn the dreadful truth that his teacher hates him. There are many avenues to the human heart. Seek for them. Try not to close the door of approach, but try to open it. Kindness is the key. Open the door, enter in and take possession, and make the last state of that boy better than the first. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Courses of Study for the High Schools of North Carolina, 1926 In the present publication, each subject is taken up separately and treated rather fully in the light Of its relations to all the other subjects and as a justification of its place in the curriculum. The Objectives ih herent in each subject are brought out in some detail. Outlines Of method are set forth and sources of material are given. A select bibliography accompanies the course in each subject. This publication is not intended to serve as a source book but as a guide to the young teacher who desires to increase her efficiency through a greater familiarity with the large body Of information that relates to her teaching field. It merely undertakes to conserve her time and energy by directing her to the sources. It is rich in suggestions, but it carefully avoids any appearance Of pre scribing either what work shall be done or the manner in which the work shall be done. The expansion of the public high schools in the State makes necessary on the part Of superintendents and principals a careful study Of high school organization and administration, in order that the public funds may be expended in the most economical way, and in order that the greatest possible returns in education may be secured from this expenditure. It is hoped that this bulletin will aid the school Officials in providing proper high school facilities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Carolina High School Bulletin, 1916, Vol. 7 How Gary uses the children's time is told in a folder which I got from the school printing office: A total of nine hundred hours is the maximum school year in most cities. This is less than two and one-half hours a day for the 365 days of the year. As a rule, one hundred hours of the nine hundred are given to unsupervised recesses. Not more than one-fourth of the city children attend Sunday School regularly, which averages only two minutes a day for all the days and all the children. In fact, the church, the Sunday School, the public library, public playgrounds, Y. M. C. A.; Boy Scouts, and other child-welfare agencies, do not occupy the time of all of the children of the city for an average of ten minutes a day. The streets and alleys, the cheap theaters, the dance halls and gambling dens, the saloons, and other commercialized places of amusement have the children for over five hours a day. The cities are not fit places for the rearing of children because as a rule the streets and alleys have twice the time for educating children in the wrong direction that the school, church, library and playground have for educating them in the right direction. In place of using for manual training, play and physical training a part of the already too few regular school hours per year, the Gary schools attempt to se cure additional school time for work and play activities by appropri ating the worse than wasted street and alley time. The Gary schools provide wholesome activities for children for eight hours a day, and are used evenings, holidays and Sundays by adults. We cannot finance a school program for eight hours a day, if it is to cost as much per hour for eight hours as it now costs per hour for two and one-half hours. Since the ordinary school revenues are not adequate to meet the customary day school children's needs, how are we to finance a program for adult activities in the school when more adults use the schools than children?
