Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina Macon County, North Carolina, is situated among the extreme western counties of the state; its southern boundary being the state line between Georgia and North Carolina, which is the thirty fifth degree of north latitude. Like the adjoining counties of Jackson, Swain, Cherokee and Clay, it is sparsely settled in its mountain parts. The principal valleys being settled much longer than the mountains, they are of course much more populous. The county embraces an area of 301,270, acres. The Blue Ridge chain of mountains entering the county from the east, stretches along a course slightly diagonal to the county line, at a distance of seven miles from the south line at its entry and extends westward, running in part with the southern boundary of the county to its western extremity. This range here assumes bold and precipitous forms, the spurs and peaks of which, Whitesides, Black Rock, Fodder Stack, Satulah, Brushy Face, Scaley and others, breaking down toward the south and west in precipitous and almost perpendicular faces of heights varying from 1,000, to 1,800, feet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heart of the Blue Ridge Where the trail bent over a knoll, Zeke halted, and put down from his shoulder the hickory cudgel with its dangling valise of black oilcloth - total of baggage with which he was faring forth into the world. Then, he straightened himself, and looked back over the way he had come. There, to the east, the dusk of night still lay somberly, hardly touched by the coming dawn. Through the shadows, the mountain masses loomed formidable and mysterious, vaguely outlined against the deeper gloom of valleys. The melancholy of the scene seemed a fit setting for the cottage that rested invisible within the forest, a half-mile distant from him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Black Bass and Other Fishing in North Carolina North Carolina are known as the Holston and the Hiawassee; the branches of the Holston be ing the trout streams, Watauga and Toe and the French Broad. The Holston making itself up out of several rivers, and going into another river does not hold on to its name for many miles. There are many other small streams, all mak ing their way westward, but all of the waters of this section are more or less similar in character, full or empty, as the rains fall; and their fish life is also similar. Man should not find fault with nature, but man may wonder why some of these streams between the Blue Ridge and the Alleghany Mountains did not make for the Atlantic Ocean through the Blue Ridge, instead of unanimously bulging through the Alleghany Mountains to help the Mississippi River fill the Gulf of Mexico. But let that pass. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Mark Morgan is the product of North Carolina brain, brawn, and blood. A man of the people, and one who, in his days of prosperity, has not been re moved from friendly touch with the homely Tar Heel. His wealth is untainted, and his liberal soul finds a place for liberality unfettered by denominational creed. Wherever this book shall be read, the author is desirous that the reader shall (through this dedica tion) make the acquaintance of Mark Morgan, a man who will live in noble disinterested deeds when this generation shall have passed away. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book of the Royal Blue, Vol. 9: October, 1905 Nature wrou'ght a wondrous work when it forged Greenland Gap. This pass is a break in the New Creek Mountains, a branch of the Allegheny system, and lies about twenty-one miles west of Keyser, West Virginia, on the Baltimore Ohio Road, in the county of Grant, in the war born State. What mighty and sudden convulsion of nature wrought, if it did, this chasm in the range of mountains none may tell; but the hand of the slow, potential forces of rain and tempest and lightning can now be seen at work separating the strata that form the cliffs that bound the gap, and piling their precipitous sides with sublime terraces of rock and boulder, where the mountain lifts its lofty and picturesque domes above an ocean of billowy sand stone. One may read in these stones, marked With the sea shells of some ancient ocean, that the sea once flowed over these grand heights and, doubtless, contributed its share to the magnificent contortions of rock, boulder and precipice that make this valley grand, if not ghastly, in spectacular beauty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Premium List, North Carolina State Fair: Raleigh, October 14th-19th, 1929 Every farmer should strive to have something that is the best of its kind in the county or community. It may be the finest Percheron, Jersey, Shorthorn, Duroc, Merino, or farm animal of any other breed; the finest mule; the best silo; the best terraced hillsides; the finest patch of alfalfa; the prettiest home; the most beautiful flowering shrubs or shade trees; the most fruitful orchard; the best soybeans; the prettiest pasture or meadow. Or he may content himself with producing the earliest cotton bale each year, the finest butter, the most uniform sweet potatoes, the highest scoring seed corn, or the finest bird dogs. It doesn't matter so much which of your products is the best, provided only that you have the ambition to have the best OF something. For the desire to have the very best of any one thing will inevitably breed in you the qualities that will give you greater success in all other lines of effort. The next thing we wish to urge is this: Having made up your mind to have the best of something, arrange to exhibit it at your state, district, county, or local fair next fall. The decision to ex bibit the product will help you. It will help you because it will make you more careful and persistent and thoroughgoing in your struggle for the highest perfection. You will learn more about the best methods. And you will practice more of the best methods you already know. You will also find more zest and eagerness in doing your work. Moreover making an exhibit will help other people. Finding that you have attained a high standard of progress or achievement will inspire others to do likewise. The whole year will be happier if each member of the family decides to do his level best with some crop or animal or some form of household production and exhibit the results at some fair next fall. If a prize is won this year, good and well. If not, the knowl edge gained and the progress made will alone be worth all the ef fort, and this will help capture prizes and blue ribbons in later years.
