Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil and Gas Exploration: Methods and Application presents a summary of new results related to oil and gas prospecting that are useful for theoreticians and practical professionals. The study of oil and gas complexes and intrusions occurring in sedimentary basins is crucial for identifying the location of oil and gas fields and for making accurate predictions on oil findings. Volume highlights include: Advanced geophysical techniques for achieving hydrocarbon exploration efficiency from beneath the Earth Discussion of theoretical and practical approaches in solving problems related to exploring and mining new oil and gas deposits New geological concepts for predicting potential hydrocarbon targets Novel methods of control of the outworking of these deposits using different geophysical methods, significant for optimization of mining hydrocarbon and carbonate deposits Estimation of the degree of outworking of oil and gas deposits, to facilitate the use of space-time monitoring of different kinds of fields Analysis of exploration data by an efficient processing system, based on strong methods proven mathematically Oil and Gas Exploration is a valuable resource for exploration geophysicists, petroleum engineers, geoengineers, petrologists, mining engineers, and economic geologists, who will gain insights into exploring new methods involved in finding natural resources from our Earth. Book excerpt: The authors of this book assess the prospects for production of oil and gas from U.S. domestic reserves and resources to the year 2000, using different scenarios with varying assumptions about numbers of new discoveries, size of fields, and rates of recovery. Oil production, claim the authors, will decline by at least 17 percent by the end of the c

They offer fresh, insightful, plausible interpretaions of the events and processes they describe. For this reason alone, this book deserves the serious attention of anyone interested in understanding how energy policy got where it is today, understood in terms of players, perspectives, and social epistemology. Its contribution as a study about the persistence of policy conflict under conditions of distrust among the major players is also solid enough because these conditions and consequences are made so arrestingly clear.' -- Policy Sciences Volume 14, Number 3, June 1982

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quantitative assessment of the ultimate conventional petroleum resources of the United States. Using a database listing all the significant oil and gas fields, the authors describe what has already been discovered, interpret why these discoveries happened when they did, and assess the remaining geologic prospects. U.S. petroleum resources are highly concentrated in a few major provinces and in a relatively small number of giant and large fields. Since the peaks in oil discoveries about 1930 and natural gas about 1950, both the number of discoveries and the amounts discovered have declined substantially. The authors conclude that most of the conventional petroleum that will ultimately be produced has already been discovered and made recoverable. Ultimate recovery will most likely be between 210 and 285 billion barrels of petroleum liquids and 920 to 1,090 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, as compared with known recovery of 175 billion barrels and 750 trillion cubic feet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1970s, experts have recognized that petroleum pollutants were being discharged in marine waters worldwide, from oil spills, vessel operations, and land-based sources. Public attention to oil spills has forced improvements. Still, a considerable amount of oil is discharged yearly into sensitive coastal environments. Oil in the Sea provides the best available estimate of oil pollutant discharge into marine waters, including an evaluation of the methods for assessing petroleum load and a discussion about the concerns these loads represent. Featuring close-up looks at the Exxon Valdez spill and other notable events, the book identifies important research questions and makes recommendations for better analysis ofâ€"and more effective measures againstâ€"pollutant discharge. The book discusses: Inputâ€"where the discharges come from, including the role of two-stroke engines used on recreational craft. Behavior or fateâ€"how oil is affected by processes such as evaporation as it moves through the marine environment. Effectsâ€"what we know about the effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on marine organisms and ecosystems. Providing a needed update on a problem of international importance, this book will be of interest to energy policy makers, industry officials and managers, engineers and researchers, and advocates for the marine environment.
