Book excerpt: Nonprofits and Government provides students and practitioners with the first comprehensive, interdisciplinary, research-based inquiry into the collaborative and conflicting relationship between nonprofits and government at all levels: local, national, and international. The contributors—all leading experts—explore how government regulates, facilitates, finances, and oversees nonprofit activities, and how nonprofits, in turn, try to shape the way government serves the public and promotes the civic, religious, and cultural life of the country. Buttressed by rigorous scholarship, a solid grasp of history, and practical ideas, this 360-degree assessment frees discussion of the nonprofit sector’s relationship to government from both wishful and insular thinking. The third edition, addresses the tremendous changes that created both opportunities and challenges for nonprofit-government relations over the past ten years, including new audit requirements, tax and regulatory changes, consequences of the Affordable Care Act and the Great Recession, and new nonprofit and philanthropic forms. This book was released on 2021-02-11 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We advance nonprofit scholarship by using the conceptual framework of policy fields to examine differences across nonprofit fields of activity. We focus on the structure of relationships among four sectors (government, nonprofit, market, informal) and how relationships differ across policy fields (here health, human services, education, arts and culture, and religion). The fields differ notably in the economic share that each sector holds and the functional division of labor among the sectors. Systemic differences also exist in how the nonprofit sector interacts with the government, market, and informal sectors. The policy fields themselves operate within national contexts of distinctive economic and political configurations. The framework explores how government-nonprofit relationships differ across policy fields, the factors responsible for this variation, and offers predictive capacity to generate hypotheses and research designs for additional research. We provide insights on how nonprofit organizations differ in key sub-fields with direct relevance for policy and practice.

Download or read book Governing Cross-Sector Collaboration written by John Forrer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-08-18 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to public sector collaboration with private and nonprofit organizations for better service delivery Governing Cross-Sector Collaboration tackles the issues inherent in partnerships with nongovernmental actors for public service delivery, highlighting the choices available and the accompanying challenges and opportunities that arise. Based on research, interviews with public, private and nonprofit sector leaders, and considerable analysis of organizations involved in public-private-nonprofit collaborations, the book provides insight into cross-sector collaboration at the global, federal, state, and local levels. Through an examination of the primary modes of cross-sector collaboration, including collaborative contracting, partnerships, networks, and independent public services providers, the book presents a clear case for how public managers can assess the trade-offs and use these options to improve public service delivery. Nonprofit organizations, businesses, and third-party contractors are increasingly partnering with government to deliver public services. Recognizing the types of collaborative approaches, and their potential to solve public policy problems is quickly becoming a major task for public managers, with new methods and techniques constantly emerging. Governing Cross-Sector Collaboration provides specific examples and a framework for public managers to make strategic choices about how to engage private and nonprofit actors in delivering public goods and services while ensuring the public interest. The book provides effective methods for choosing, designing, governing, and evaluating networks, partnerships, and independent public-services providers, with in-depth discussion encompassing: Analysis and engagement of cross-sector organizations Fostering democratic accountability in the public interest Collaborative approaches (including contracts, networks and partnerships) and the issues associated with each type of arrangement Leadership and organizational learning in cross-sector collaboration Included case studies illustrate effective application of the concepts and methods described, providing both practicing public and nonprofit managers and public policy/administration students with insight into these emerging strategic alliances. The first comprehensive guide to public governance collaborations, Governing Cross-Sector Collaboration is an important and timely contribution to the field of public management.

Book Synopsis Government and the Third Sector by : Benjamin Gidron
Download or read book Government and the Third Sector written by Benjamin Gidron and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 1992-05-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ten chapters written expressly for this book, international experts in economics, political science, sociology, and social welfare examine the position of the third sector vis-a-vis government in European countries and Israel, revealing the growing interdependence of the public and voluntary sectors. The conventional wisdom assumes a basic conflict between the voluntary sector and the state. The authors of this volume show that, far from competing with government, nonprofit organizations provide an alternative set of mechanisms through which to deliver publicly financed services. In many countries, for example, partnerships between local government and voluntary organizations are thriving. The authors put the current debate over the relative roles of government and the nonprofit sector into perspective by examining how the relationship between them has developed; evaluate the possibilities for cooperation between nonprofits and the state in coping with current social needs; assess the extent to which nonprofit organizations can assume new burdens; and explore, in different national settings, the evolving relationship between the nonprofit sector and the state, which has come to be a central issue in the political discourse of our day.
Book Synopsis Partnerships the Nonprofit Way by : Stuart C. Mendel
Download or read book Partnerships the Nonprofit Way written by Stuart C. Mendel and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collaboration and partnership are well-known characteristics of the nonprofit sector, as well as important tools of public policy and for creating public value. But how do nonprofits form successful partnerships? From the perspective of nonprofit practice, the conditions leading to collaboration and partnership are seldom ideal. Nonprofit executives contemplating interorganizational cooperation, collaboration, networks, partnership, and merger face a bewildering array of challenges. In Partnerships the Nonprofit Way: What Matters, What Doesn't, the authors share the success and failures of 52 nonprofit leaders. By depicting and contextualizing nonprofit organization characteristics and practices that make collaboration successful, the authors propose new theory and partnership principles that challenge conventional concepts centered on contractual fulfillment and accountability, and provide practical advice that can assist nonprofit leaders and others in creating and sustaining strategic, mutually beneficial partnerships of their own.
Book Synopsis Nonprofit Sector by : Stanley J. Czerwinski
Download or read book Nonprofit Sector written by Stanley J. Czerwinski and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fed. gov¿t. uses a variety of funding mechanisms to achieve nat. priorities through partnerships with nonprofit org. (NO), and the relationships are sometimes complex and multidirectional. NO receive fed. grant and contract funds both directly and through other entities, such as states, for performing activities or providing services to particular beneficiaries. Factors contributing to data limitations include the nonprofit status of recipients being self-reported and no consistent definition of nonprofit across data systems. Accurately determining the extent of fed. funds reaching the sector is not possible, leaving policy makers without a clear understanding of the extent of funding to, and importance of, key partners in delivering fed. programs and services
Book Synopsis Cases in Innovative Nonprofits by : Ram A. Cnaan
Download or read book Cases in Innovative Nonprofits written by Ram A. Cnaan and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Become an innovator in the nonprofit world Student friendly and readable, Cases in Innovative Nonprofits provides readers with current comparative case studies of innovative nonprofit organizations that are meeting the needs of humanity in both the U.S. and abroad. Edited by well-known scholars, Ram A. Cnaan and Diane Vinokur-Kaplan, this text provides inspiring examples of social entrepreneurs who have instituted new services to meet the needs of both new and long standing social problems. Each case features either an unidentified need and its successful response, or an existing need that was tackled in a unique and innovative manner. The text is purposefully organized into four parts: Part 1: Two conceptual chapters give the reader an understanding of what a nonprofit social innovation is and tools to analyze various social innovations in this volume and elsewhere. Part 2: Ten cases reveal the innovative formation of new nonprofit organizations. Part 3: Three cases emphasize innovation through collaboration. Part 4: Five cases demonstrate innovations taking place within an existing nonprofit organization. By using a simple, identical format for each case, this text facilitates student learning through comparative review, providing a deeper understanding about the complexity and steps required to achieve nonprofit social innovation.

Global in scope and authoritative in content, the Encyclopedia offers succinct summaries of core concepts and theories; definitions of terms; biographical entries on important figures and organizational profiles. In addition, it serves as a reliable and up-to-date guide to additional sources of information. In sum, the Encyclopedia provides an overview of the contours of civil society, social capital, philanthropy and nonprofits across cultures and historical periods. For researchers in nonprofit and civil society studies, political science, economics, management and social enterprise, this is the most systematic appraisal of a rapidly growing field.
Book Synopsis Communicating Causes by : Nicky Garsten
Download or read book Communicating Causes written by Nicky Garsten and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-profit organizations (NPOs) across the world are facing criticism alongside approbation. In order for NPOs to effectively support their causes, they require public trust. The editors of this book have persuaded PR experts from the UK and around the world, from a variety of PR specialisms operating across different organizational forms, to share their knowledge and experience. These contributions are scaffolded with authoritative academic and practical advice, as well as solutions. The book starts with foundations that underpin communications for causes. These include arguments that support the importance of non-profits in civil society; lessons in corporate governance; and a new approach to issues management. PR planning subjects tailored, or specific, to the sector include: strategic global communications planning, agile digital communications; branding internal communications and the securing of meaningful outcomes. Corporate partnerships are examined with a new ‘Fit to Partner Test’ and consideration of the mandated corporate social responsibility (CSR) in India, corporate volunteering in Brazil, and CSR in South Africa. Relations between governments and non-profits are also considered, both generally and with a particular focus on China. Communicating Causes looks at effective strategy and practice of PR in the modern non-profit. Including forewords by both John Grounds and Jon Snow, the expert perspectives offered in this book provide valuable support to current and future communicators.

Book Synopsis Rebalancing Public Partnership by : John Brothers
Download or read book Rebalancing Public Partnership written by John Brothers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the US, as in many other Western economies, federal and state government is working to become more involved with the nonprofit sector; a sector in which many of the organizations are singularly ill-prepared and strategically unaligned to fulfill the new role that is being asked of them. Based on his original research, John Brothers brings together leading thought leaders from the United States and around the world by exploring the prevailing attitudes and perceptions of the nonprofit sector towards government and vice versa and provides advice and direction to help both sides of the equation towards effective collaborative working. The main themes cover the nature and implications of regulatory reform on the sector and how non-government organizations should reengineer their practices. There are also chapters on some of the hot button areas of government contracting and political advocacy. The text includes best-practice examples, case studies as well as tools and templates from across the sectors. Both sides of this emerging partnership need fast-track education on each other’s capabilities, constraints and working practice. Dr Brothers’ contributors provide some very valuable perspectives and insights that should inform and direct this process.
