Book excerpt: This is the first volume of a series of books that will describe current advances and past accompli shments of mathemat i ca 1 aspects of nonlinear sCience taken in the broadest contexts. This subject has been studied for hundreds of years, yet it is the topic in whi ch a number of outstandi ng di scoveri es have been made in the past two decades. Clearly, this trend will continue. In fact, we believe some of the great scientific problems in this area will be clarified and perhaps resolved. One of the reasons for this development is the emerging new mathematical ideas of nonlinear science. It is clear that by looking at the mathematical structures themselves that underlie experiment and observation that new vistas of conceptual thinking lie at the foundation of the unexplored area in this field. To speak of specific examples, one notes that the whole area of bifurcation was rarely talked about in the early parts of this century, even though it was discussed mathematically by Poi ncare at the end of the ni neteenth century. I n another di rect ion, turbulence has been a key observation in fluid dynamics, yet it was only recently, in the past decade, that simple computer studies brought to light simple dynamical models in which chaotic dynamics, hopefully closely related to turbulence, can be observed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theories of bifurcation, chaos and fractals as well as equilibrium, stability and nonlinear oscillations, are part of the theory of the evolution of solutions of nonlinear equations. A wide range of mathematical tools and ideas are drawn together in the study of these solutions, and the results applied to diverse and countless problems in the natural and social sciences, even philosophy. The text evolves from courses given by the author in the UK and the United States. It introduces the mathematical properties of nonlinear systems, mostly difference and differential equations, as an integrated theory, rather than presenting isolated fashionable topics. Topics are discussed in as concrete a way as possible and worked examples and problems are used to explain, motivate and illustrate the general principles. The essence of these principles, rather than proof or rigour, is emphasized. More advanced parts of the text are denoted by asterisks, and the mathematical prerequisites are limited to knowledge of linear algebra and advanced calculus, thus making it ideally suited to both senior undergraduates and postgraduates from physics, engineering, chemistry, meteorology etc. as well as mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nonlinear system is a set of nonlinear equations, which may be algebraic, ordinary differential, partial differential, fractional, integral or a combination of these. Especially, nowadays, the term "dynamical system" is used as a synonym of nonlinear systems where the nonlinear equations represent the evolution of a solution over time. So, the notion of dynamical systems arose following the name of equations governing the motion of a system of particles, even though the nonlinear system may have no application to mechanics. Also, from an engineering point of view a nonlinear system may be represented with a feedback loop in which the output of an element is not proportional to its input. Over the last few decades, nonlinear systems have been used to describe a great variety of phenomena, in social and life sciences as well as in physical sciences and engineering. The theory of nonlinear systems has applications to problems of population growth, economics, chemical reactions, celestial mechanics, physiology of nerves, onset of turbulence, regulation of heartbeats, electronic circuits, cryptography, secure communications and many others. Nonlinear dynamical systems, which present chaotic behavior, are of great importance due to their applications in science and engineering. Chaotic systems are nonlinear dynamical systems and maps that are highly sensitive to initial conditions. The sensitivity of initial conditions is usually called the butter'y effect for dynamical systems and maps. So, nowadays the design and analysis of nonlinear systems and especially chaotic systems has gained the interest of the research community due to the fact that many phenomena on financial, physical, biological, chemical, mechanical and engineering systems can be modeled and studied through the perspective of nonlinear dynamics. These nonlinear systems can be modeled by discrete-time or continuous-time mathematical models. This book aims to bridge the gap between the design/analysis and applications, which are the two research stages on the progress of nonlinear systems and also which open up some new directions of real applications, where chaos can be put up to technological use, including secure communication systems, electronic circuits' design, memristors and radar. Finally, this book can serve as an updated and handy reference for university professors, graduate students, laboratory researchers as well as physicists and applied mathematicians who are interested in studying the chaos and its applications through the field of nonlinear systems.

Book excerpt: This book is part of a two volume set which presents the analysis of nonlinear phenomena as a long-standing challenge for research in basic and applied science as well as engineering. It discusses nonlinear differential and differential equations, bifurcation theory for periodic orbits and global connections. The integrability and reversibility of planar vector fields and theoretical analysis of classic physical models are sketched. This first volume concentrates on the mathematical theory and computational techniques that are essential for the study of nonlinear science, a second volume deals with real-world nonlinear phenomena in condensed matter, biology and optics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the nonlinear dynamics based on the vector fields with univariate quadratic functions. This book is a unique monograph for two-dimensional quadratic nonlinear systems. It provides different points of view about nonlinear dynamics and bifurcations of the quadratic dynamical systems. Such a two-dimensional dynamical system is one of simplest dynamical systems in nonlinear dynamics, but the local and global structures of equilibriums and flows in such two-dimensional quadratic systems help us understand other nonlinear dynamical systems, which is also a crucial step toward solving the Hilbert’s sixteenth problem. Possible singular dynamics of the two-dimensional quadratic systems are discussed in detail. The dynamics of equilibriums and one-dimensional flows in two-dimensional systems are presented. Saddle-sink and saddle-source bifurcations are discussed, and saddle-center bifurcations are presented. The infinite-equilibrium states are switching bifurcations for nonlinear systems. From the first integral manifolds, the saddle-center networks are developed, and the networks of saddles, source, and sink are also presented. This book serves as a reference book on dynamical systems and control for researchers, students, and engineering in mathematics, mechanical, and electrical engineering.

Chapter 12 applies controls to antisynchronization/synchronization in the chaotic models based on Lyapunov exponent theorem, and Chapter 13 discusses developed stability analytic approaches in terms of Lyapunov stability. The analysis of economic activities, especially the relationship between stock return and economic growth, is presented in Chapter 14.

Book excerpt: Regularity and Complexity in Dynamical Systems describes periodic and chaotic behaviors in dynamical systems, including continuous, discrete, impulsive, discontinuous, and switching systems. In traditional analysis, the periodic and chaotic behaviors in continuous, nonlinear dynamical systems were extensively discussed even if unsolved. In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of interest in periodic and chaotic behaviors in discontinuous dynamical systems because such dynamical systems are prevalent in engineering. Usually, the smoothening of discontinuous dynamical system is adopted in order to use the theory of continuous dynamical systems. However, such technique cannot provide suitable results in such discontinuous systems. In this book, an alternative way is presented to discuss the periodic and chaotic behaviors in discontinuous dynamical systems.
