As symbolized by the "Janglish (Japanese English)" word, mechatronics, the technology and the social adaptation for introducing electronics into mechanics has been readily accepted in Japan. Currently robots are producing many products under computer control in Japanese factories, and supermarkets are utilizing automation systems for sample displays and sales. Further, the fast paced change in semiconductor chip technology has given rise to the need for micro-displacement positioning techniques. Actuators utilizing piezoelectridelectrostrictive effects are expected to meet these needs in mechanical components in the next micro mechatronic age. This book, in English, builds on my earlier publications concerned with ceramic actuators. The first edition titled "Essentials for Development and Applications of Piezoelectric Actuators" was published in 1984 through the Japan Industrial Technology Center. The second edition "PiezoelectriclElectrostrictive Actuators" published in Japanese through Morikita Pub. Co. (Tokyo) became one of the best sellers in that company in 1986, and was then translated into Korean. The problem solving edition "Piezoelectric Actuators -Problem Solving" was also published through Morikita, which was sold in conjunction with a 60 minute video tape to provide easy understanding.

Book excerpt: The focus of this investigation is on the formulation and a validation of reduced order models (ROMs) for the prediction of the response of structures with embedded piezoelectric actuators. The ROMs considered here are those constructed in a nonintrusive manner from a commercial finite element software, NASTRAN is adopted here. Notwithstanding the popularity of piezoelectric materials in structural dynamics related applications such as structural health monitoring and energy harvesting, not all commercial finite element software allow directly their modeling. In such cases, e.g., with NASTRAN, one can proceed with an analogy and replace the electric actuation in the piezoelectric material by a fictitious thermal effect producing the same strain. This process recasts the determination of a ROM for a structure with embedded piezoelectric actuator into a similar ROM but for a heated structure, the framework of which has recently been developed. Yet, the temperature field resulting from the analogy would be quite different from the one considered in past effort and would excite a broad array of structural modes. Accordingly, as a preamble to considering a beam with a piezoelectric layer, a simpler plate model is considered that is subjected to a uniform temperature but a complex pressure loading that excites the entire set of modes of the plate in the broad frequency band considered. The very good match of the predictions obtained by this ROM in comparison to their full finite element counterparts provides the necessary confidence to next address a beam with embedded piezoelectic actuator. The test model considered for this validation is a built-up nano beam analyzed recently in nonlinear geometric conditions by full finite elements and by a non-intrusive ROM procedure under harmonic variations of the piezoelectic voltage. This structural model and its loading conditions are very different from those considered in past applications of nonintrusive ROMs, thus the excellent results obtained here provide further support of the broad generality of the nonintrusive ROM methodology, including of the appropriateness of the "dual modes" basis functions.

Book excerpt: A NASTRAN non-linear finite element model has been developed for predicting the dome heights of THUNDER (THin Layer UNimorph Ferroelectric DrivER) piezoceramic actuators. To analytically validate the finite element model, a comparison was made with a non-linear plate solution using Von Karmen's approximation. A 500 volt input was used to examine the actuator deformation. The NASTRAN finite element model was also compared with experimental results. Four groups of specimens were fabricated and tested. Four different input voltages, which included 120, 160, 200, and 240 Vp-p with a 0 volts offset, were used for this comparison.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibrations at a resonant frequency lead to catastrophic failure or at the very least, shorten the life span of the structure due to fatigue. These problems force engineers to implement damping techniques. Smart materials have been used over two decades to reduced vibration amplitudes. Recently, there has been much research and development on smart materials and structures. This work introduces an innovative approach for vibration suppression using passively shunted piezolectric materials. Initially linear circuit elements such as resistors, capacitors, and inductances, or building a non-linear circuit with different impedance designs were used. Instead of such elements, a switched electromechanical shunt has been proposed as a method to suppress vibrations of mechanical structures. In this state switching technique, bonded piezoelectric elements are switched from open circuit to closed circuit depending on the voltage produced from the piezoelectric patch. This new shunt circuit utilizes diodes. Diodes are nonlinear circuit elements and vibration amplitude is reduced due to introduction of nonlinearity into the system. A physics-based electro-mechanical model is developed and validated against experimental results. The smart plate consists of a rectangular aluminum plate modeled in cantilever configuration with surface bonded piezoelectric patches. Basic equations for piezoelectric sensors and actuators are presented. The equation of motion for the plate structure with bonded piezoelectric patch is depicted. The implementation of the circuit is demonstrated analytically and experimentally. The concept is demonstrated on two different modes and vibration peaks are lowered using the above mentioned circuit. Then a numerical model of the plate with the piezoelectric patch and the circuit is built in Simulink after designing a finite element model in ABAQUS. The data shows the effect of damping in Frequency Response Functions (FRFs) and in the response plots. A state-space model is also developed. Simulations of the model are compared to the experimental results. The results indicate the feasibility of the smart damping materials for many industrial applications where reducing noise and vibrations are desired. It is clear that the maximum suppression that can be obtained with this method is dependent on the voltage drop across the piezoelectric element.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper is concerned with a physically nonlinear piezoelectric material behavior and its applications to practical problems. A survey of work dealing with the phenomenon is included in the introduction. Subsequently, the emphasis is on the analysis of vibrations of piezoelectric rods where a rather unique situation is observed, i.e. the response of a nonlinear system can be modeled by linear equations of motion. The solutions are obtained analytically by the Lagrange equation and by the Generalized Galerkin procedure. Applying either of these methods, the study of forced vibrations of a physically nonlinear piezoelectric rod subject to a periodic electric field in the axial direction is reduced to the analysis of a system of nonhomogeneous Mathieu-Hill equations. In the particular case where the interaction between axial and radial vibrations can be neglected, the closed-form solution for the former vibrations is obtained in the paper and it is shown that both the Lagrange equation and the Generalized Galerkin procedure yield identical results. Numerical examples presented in the paper elucidate the significance of physically nonlinear effects that should not be arbitrary disregarded in design, without a proper evidence.

Book excerpt: Piezoelectric actuators are simple structures with compact sizes that provide quick and precise responses to an electrical stimulus. The response of the piezoelectric actuator can be a mechanical displacement or a blocking force with the magnitude determined by the structure's geometry and the electromechanical properties of the materials used. This book presents topical research in the study of piezoelectric actuators. Topics discussed include thick-film piezoelectric actuators prepared by screen-printing; pressure control of vehicle ABS using piezoactuator-based valve modulators; ultrasonic actuators based on the Langevin transducer; the dynamics of hinged-hinged beam using piezoelectric absorbers and modelling and control of piezoelectric actuator systems.
