Book excerpt: Experimental programs in laboratories give real results to identify nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures but they are limited to knowledge of particular cases under restricted structural dimensions, sizes, shapes, loading and boundary conditions but the computational simulation approach has no limit to its application. Constitutive models are developed to simulate the dynamic nonlinear response of concrete and steel reinforcement subjected to cyclic loading varying randomly in magnitude. The behavior of structural concrete under monotonic loading is affected by important material aspects including cracking, crushing, tension stiffening, compression softening and bond slip. Reversed cyclic loading introduces further complexities such as stiffness degradation in concrete and the Bauschinger effect in reinforcing steel. In this research the validity and reliability of some proposed constitutive models for concrete considering general loading i.e. cyclic, monotonic, partial, common point and transition loading are evaluated. Amongst many existing constitutive models, because of their simplicity and common usage in the finite element analysis of RC structures, only some common proposed models based on nonlinear elasticity-based approach are investigated. These models are verified against experimental data available in the literature and the results are discussed. In this study, also, a hysteretic stress–strain model is developed for unconfined concrete with the intention of providing efficient modeling for the structural behavior of concrete in seismic regions. The proposed model is based on the findings of previous experimental and analytical studies. The model for concrete subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading, comprises four components in compression and tension; an envelope curve (for monotonic and cyclic loading), an unloading curve, a reloading curve, and transition curve. Also presented are formulations for partial unloading and partial reloading curves. The proposed Constitutive model reliability is investigated by RC members non-linear finite element analysis (FEM) using by finite element software ABAQUS. Comparisons with test results showed that the proposed model provides a good fit to a wide range of experimentally established hysteresis loops.

Book excerpt: The results obtained from four numerical tests indicate that the proposed computational scheme and the implemented codes are accurate and reliable. The need to incorporate fire loads into reinforced concrete structural design has long been recognized, and the traditional design method for structural fire resistance has been widely practiced by engineers mainly because of its simplicity. To simulate the structure's response to thermal loads, this research develops and implements a 2D nonlinear finite element transient analysis for reinforced concrete structures subjected to high temperatures. The proposed computational scheme takes into account time-varying thermal loads, heat-of-hydration effects, and temperature-dependent material properties. Algorithms for calculating the closed-form element stiffness for a quadrilateral element with a fully-populated material stiffness are also developed. Then, the capability of a 2D nonlinear finite element transient thermal analysis is implemented into program VecTor2(c), a nonlinear analysis program for 2D reinforced concrete membranes.

Book excerpt: The work presents the theoretical basis of Additional Finite Element Method (AFEM), which is a variant of the Finite Element Method (FEM) for analysis of reinforced concrete structures at limit state. AFEM adds to the traditional sequence of problem by FEM the units of the two well-known methods of the structural design: method of additional loads and limit state method. The problem is solved by introduction of ideal failure models and additional design diagrams formed from additional finite elements, where each AFE describes the limit state reached by the main element. The main relations defining the properties of AFEs as well as the examples of the use of Additional Finite Element Method for analysis of reinforced concrete structures at limit state are given in the work too.

Book excerpt: The stress transfer behavior between reinforcing steel and surrounding concrete through bond and slip plays an important role in the response of reinforced concrete structures, especially in their hysteretic response. This thesis studies the bond-slip relationship under both monotonic loading and cyclic loading. Two types of bond elements, contact elements and linkage elements, are developed and bond stiffness matrices are derived. Four bond-slip models are presented based on the findings of previous experimental studies. The degradation of bond resistance is included in the bond-slip models. The two bond elements and four bond-slip models are added into the nonlinear finite element program TRIX99. The finite element models are then used to study the behavior of reinforced concrete walls subjected to cyclic lateral load. The accuracy of the models are assessed by comparison of the finite element numerical response with experimental data from four reinforced concrete shear walls tested under cyclic loading. The NLFEA program with the nonlinear material models for concrete, reinforcing bar and bond-slip is capable of reproducing the important features of the measured hysteretic response of reinforced concrete walls with a variety of cyclic loading histories and configurations of walls. The program is able to successfully predict the load-deflection values of the reinforced concrete structures under cyclic loading. The proposed finite element method provides an efficient method for evaluating the monotonic and cyclic response of the reinforced concrete structures.

Book excerpt: Non-linear computer analysis methods have seen remarkable advancement in the last half-century. The state-of-the-art in non-linear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete has progressed to the point where such procedures are close to being practical, every-day tools for design office engineers. Non-linear computer analysis procedures can be used to provide reliable assessments of the strength and integrity of damaged or deteriorated structures, or of structures built to previous codes, standards or practices deemed to be deficient today. They can serve as valuable tools in assessing the expected behaviour from retrofitted structures, or in investigating and rationally selecting amongst various repair alternatives. fib Bulletin 45 provides an overview of current concepts and techniques relating to computer-based finite element modelling of structural concrete. It summarises the basic knowledge required for use of nonlinear analysis methods as applied to practical design, construction and maintenance of concrete structures, and attempts to provide a diverse and balanced portrayal of the current technical knowledge, recognizing that there are often competing and conflicting viewpoints. This report does not give advice on picking one model over another but, rather, provides guidance to designers on how to use existing and future models as tools in design practice, in benchmarking of their models against established and reliable test data and in selecting an appropriate safety factor as well as recognising various pitfalls. fib Bulletin 45 is intended for practicing engineers, and therefore focuses more on practical application and less on the subtleties of constitutive modelling.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled NONLINEAR ANALYSIS OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS AND COLUMNS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO FULL-RANGE AND CYCLIC BEHAVIOUR Submitted by BAI Zhizhou for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in December 2006 In this thesis, the full-range flexural behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams and columns made of normal- and high-strength concrete under both monotonic and cyclic loading is studied. The full-range moment-curvature relationships are obtained based on a numerical method that considers the cyclic response of constitutive materials. A two-dimensional nonlinear finite element procedure is also developed for the analysis of RC beams under monotonic and non-reversed cyclic loading. For RC beam sections, it is found that the full-range flexural behaviour is basically dependent on the tension steel to balanced steel ratio. The full-range moment-curvature curves for under-reinforced sections have long yield plateaus while those for over-reinforced sections have sharp peaks. The full-range moment-curvature curves under monotonic loading in sagging and hogging moments are found to give the envelope for cyclic response. Reversed cyclic loading generally creates overall residual tensile strains in RC sections, and is especially significant for under-reinforced sections. The variation of neutral axis depth during monotonic and cyclic loading shows different trends for under- and over-reinforced sections. For RC column sections, it is found that the full-range flexural behaviour is strongly dependent on the axial load and confinement, which govern the moment capacity, ductility and failure mode of an RC column. The flexural ductility is generally reduced by compressive axial load but increased by confinement. The moment-curvature curve of a section under tensile axial load or relatively low compressive axial load has a long plateau around peak moment, while that under relatively high compressive axial load has a sharper peak. The complete moment-curvature curves under monotonic loading in sagging and hogging moments give the envelope for cyclic response except for sections under very high compressive axial load. A section under tensile axial load or low compressive axial load tends to elongate after a complete cyclic loading, while a section under high compressive axial load tends to shorten. The variations of neutral axis depth and steel stresses are also dependent on the axial load and confinement. The effect of concrete tensile strength is only notable for under-reinforced RC beam sections and for RC column sections under tensile axial load or relatively low compressive axial load at the service stage. The Bauschinger effect of steel is negligible in the case of RC sections undergoing non-reversed cyclic loading, but becomes significant for reversed cyclic loading that is extended into large inelastic deformation. Besides section analyses, a two-dimensional nonlinear finite element procedure is also developed for better understanding of the behaviour of RC beams under monotonic and non-reversed cyclic loading. In particular, the local bond-slip effect is modelled by linear displacement contact elements. The numerical predictions are validated by experimental results. With the proper choice of bond parameters, results show that the procedure is capable of modelling the for
