Book Synopsis Selected Poems of Gabriela Mistral by : Gabriela Mistral
Download or read book Selected Poems of Gabriela Mistral written by Gabriela Mistral and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Nobel Prize in literature to be awarded to a Latin American writer went to the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral. Famous and beloved during her lifetime all over Latin America and in Europe, Mistral has never been known in North America as she deserves to be. The reputation of her more flamboyant and accessible friend and countryman Pablo Neruda has overshadowed hers, and she has been officially sentimentalized into a "poetess" of children and motherhood. Translations, and even selections of her work in Spanish, have tended to underplay the darkness, the strangeness, and the raging intensity of her poems of grief and pain, the yearning power of her evocations of the Chilean landscape, the stark music of her Round Dances, the visionary splendor of her Hymns of America. During her lifetime Mistral published four books: Desolation, Tenderness, Clearcut, and Winepress. These are included in the "Complete" Nobel edition published in Madrid; the Poem of Chile, her last book, was printed years after her death. Le Guin includes poems from all five books in this volume, with particular emphasis on the later work. The intelligence and passion of Le Guin's selection and translation will finally allow people in the North to hear the originality, power, purity, and intransigence of this great American voice. Le Guin has published five volumes of her own poetry, an English version of Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching, and a volume of mutual translation with the Argentine poet Diana Bellessi, The Twins, the Dream/Las Gemalas, El Sueño. Strongly drawn to Mistral's work as soon as she discovered it, Le Guin has been working on this translation for five years.

This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Saint John of the Cross is the great unknown of the Christian community. The last forty years have seen a growth in prayer methods and transcendental meditation. The search for a guide that teaches such prayer and meditation practices have led many seekers to the teachings of Saint John of the Cross. Like a song that sings the beauty of the creation in its sublime poems, the Saint teaches us that all of the beauty of creation is nothing in comparison with the beauty of the divine. In this book, Isaías A. Rodriguez does not pretend to be able to substitute Saint John in what he can teach us, but he helps us to understand what Saint John says to us, to discover the roads that he shows us, and to stay on course for our life pilgrimage.

Book Synopsis Defiant Deviance by : Cristina Santos
Download or read book Defiant Deviance written by Cristina Santos and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study embarks, from a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach, on redefining the «supernatural» as elements that fail to be framed as «natural» by their socio-cultural environment. The «supernatural» elements depicted in this study encompass such monstrous representations as witches, vampires, angels, virgins, apparitions, and other universally recognized reflections of human existence - though not all «supernatural» representations are seen as «monstrous, » but as physical and psychological embodiments of common human experience. Contributors to this project represent a wide scope of literary genres and eras, as well as differing theoretical approaches, united by the common goal of defining the «irreality of reality.»

Book Synopsis Imaging The Great Puerto Rican Family by : Hilda Lloréns
Download or read book Imaging The Great Puerto Rican Family written by Hilda Lloréns and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Imaging The Great Puerto Rican Family: Framing Nation, Race and Gender during the American Century, Hilda Lloréns offers a ground-breaking study of images—photographs, postcards, paintings, posters, and films—about Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans made by American and Puerto Rican image-makers between 1890 and 1990. Through illuminating discussions of artists, images, and social events, the book offers a critical analysis of the power-laden cultural and historic junctures imbricated in the creation of re-presentations of Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans by Americans (“outsiders”) and Puerto Ricans (“insiders”) during an historical epoch marked by the twin concepts of “modernization” and “progress.” The study excavates the ways in which colonial power and resistance to it have shaped representations of Puerto Rico and its people. Hilda Lloréns demonstrates how nation, race, and gender figure in representation, and how these representations in turn help shape the discourses of nation, race, and gender. Imaging The Great Puerto Rican Family masterfully illustrates that as significant actors in the shaping of national conceptions of history image-makers have created iconic symbols deeply enmeshed in an “emotional aesthetics of nation.” The book proposes that images as important conveyers of knowledge and information are a fertile data site. At the same time, Lloréns underscores how colonial modernity turned global, the conceptual framework informing the analysis, not only calls attention to the national and global networks in which image-makers have been a part of, and by which they have been influenced, but highlights the manners by which technologies of imaging and “seeing” have been prime movers as well as critics of modernity.
