Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary success of the Left Behind series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins shows that their action/adventure novels have tapped into the American psyche. It has revived our fascination with vivid images of the book of Revelation and other biblical texts: the Antichrist, the mysterious number 666, and people suddenly raptured into the sky by God. But is there something dangerous behind the thinking in these books and how they play out in our world today? In Left Behind or Left Befuddled, Gordon Isaac takes the reader inside the theology behind the series. In clear and accessible prose, Isaac answers many important questions that Christians have about the phenomenon that is Left Behind: Is this Vision of the end times really biblical? Why do people have such a powerful response to it? What are alternative ways to think about the end times? How do the books view Catholics and other Christians? What does this Vision of things mean for Israel and the Jewish people? How can we counter the myths proposed in the series as fact? Gordon Isaac is the Berkshire Associate Professor of Advent Christian Studies in the church history department at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts. He is also an ordained Advent Christian minister who has served a number of congregations.
Download or read book Uprooted written by Grace Olmstead and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A superior exploration of the consequences of the hollowing out of our agricultural heartlands."—Kirkus Reviews In the tradition of Wendell Berry, a young writer wrestles with what we owe the places we’ve left behind. In the tiny farm town of Emmett, Idaho, there are two kinds of people: those who leave and those who stay. Those who leave go in search of greener pastures, better jobs, and college. Those who stay are left to contend with thinning communities, punishing government farm policy, and environmental decay. Grace Olmstead, now a journalist in Washington, DC, is one who left, and in Uprooted, she examines the heartbreaking consequences of uprooting—for Emmett, and for the greater heartland America. Part memoir, part journalistic investigation, Uprooted wrestles with the questions of what we owe the places we come from and what we are willing to sacrifice for profit and progress. As part of her own quest to decide whether or not to return to her roots, Olmstead revisits the stories of those who, like her great-grandparents and grandparents, made Emmett a strong community and her childhood idyllic. She looks at the stark realities of farming life today, identifying the government policies and big agriculture practices that make it almost impossible for such towns to survive. And she explores the ranks of Emmett’s newcomers and what growth means for the area’s farming tradition. Avoiding both sentimental devotion to the past and blind faith in progress, Olmstead uncovers ways modern life attacks all of our roots, both metaphorical and literal. She brings readers face to face with the damage and brain drain left in the wake of our pursuit of self-improvement, economic opportunity, and so-called growth. Ultimately, she comes to an uneasy conclusion for herself: one can cultivate habits and practices that promote rootedness wherever one may be, but: some things, once lost, cannot be recovered.

Book Synopsis The Church That Is Left Behind by : Kobus Swart
Download or read book The Church That Is Left Behind written by Kobus Swart and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant pillar of twentieth century dispensationalism, is the postponement doctrine of the kingdom of God. This indiscriminate futurism has caused great damage and robbed the gospel of its power in the lives of believers for years. John the Baptist and Jesus both clearly identified the kingdom with the era of the Holy Spirit. At no time anywhere in Scripture, was the coming of the kingdom made conditional on a Jewish response or event. What more effective strategy could the enemy use than to have Christians believe they should be in passive waiting mode? Has our failure to proclaim a full and accurate gospel of the kingdom, left nations untouched, still plagued by disease, famine and corruption, despite decades of "evangelism"? An eschatology of victory awaits a victorious church, that engages with the Holy Spirit in this present apostolic season. Creation has been waiting in eager expectation for the manifestation of the sons of God. What are the sons waiting for? Are you ready to respond? In this book Kobus Swart resolutely confronts the erroneous doctrinal stronghold of eschatology. For centuries the church has been imprisoned and restrained in fulfilling its governmental mandate because of inaccurate interpretations of the end times. This is an invaluable resource in identifying and unveiling deceptive eschatological ideologies and presenting a more accurate understanding of the end of the age. Thamo Naidoo, River of Life Ministries, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Kobus Swart has been in full time ministry since 1974, and is the founder of the Bizweni Community Church in Somerset West, near Cape Town, South Africa, where he and his family live. From this apostolic resource base he leads a ministry team serving believers both locally and in other nations.

Book excerpt: Throughout our denomination’s nearly 130-year history, twenty-one general overseers have been selected by its ministers as the denomination’s premier leaders—from A. J. Tomlinson, the first, until Raymond F. Culpepper, whose term ended in 2012. Except for the first three, Dr. Douglas LeRoy has known each of them personally. That places him in a unique position to tell the stories of these officials and reflect on their leadership. He also allows each leader to speak for himself through a sermon selected from his writings. This has been a labor of love for Doug LeRoy, performed over a period of years. He has done well! Let us now learn from our leaders. I am convinced this book will increase our understanding, help us avoid pitfalls, multiply our effectiveness, enhance our endurance, and inspire us. I commend it to your reading. —Mark L. Williams General Overseer, Church of God January 2014

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israel was not prepared for the first appearance of the Messiah. Yet Israel had esteemed religious leaders, the Pharisees, Sadducees, and an awesome Temple. Likely they felt they were ready to welcome the Messiah. Today members of the church sound like they are ready for the next appearance of Christ, when He comes to rapture the church. But it would be prudent to consider that we could also be making a tragic mistake. Jesus warned us to Keep Watch! This warning was given using parables. One such story concluded that if the owner of the house had known when the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and not been robbed. Jesus said that if we are not ready when the rapture occurs, there will be consequences. We will feel robbed, as if struck by a thief who comes in the night. The last time Christ appeared - His people were not prepared, and Christ suffered. When Christ comes to rapture the church - many of His people will not be prepared. But this time - it will be the unprepared believer who will suffer. Christ will be coming with power and great glory. Jesus warned us to keep watch - you need to understand why! INTRODUCTION Current rapture theories assume that there will be only one rapture of the church. It will be a defining moment when, from among God's people, only Israel will remain on earth. But such a limited view of the rapture has resulted in conflicting theories. Advocates of each rapture theory zealously explain why the other theories are wrong. To resolve these contradictions, and more importantly to get at the truth, the possibility of two separate raptures needs to be considered. An early partial rapture followed by a complete rapture of the church, much later, meets the criteria upon which the leading rapture theories are based. From this perspective we find in scripture an early rapture that marks the end the Church Age. While it is the birthright of every believer to participate in this early rapture, those destined for discipline, such as promised the Laodicea Church, will be left behind on earth (Revelation 3:19; Matthew 24:50-51). Other theories place the rapture much later in the final seven years, and emphasize that the church must be raptured prior to God's wrath upon the earth (1 Thessalonians 1:10; 5:9). What is found in scripture is a complete rapture of the church, accompanied by the resurrection of God's people, just before the seven bowls of God's wrath (Revelation 14:14-16). In the past this harvest has been largely ignored; it is frequently interpreted as having only symbolic meaning. Casual observers of our rapture debate sometimes observe that our theories do not matter. Do any of the current theories change the way we live on a daily basis? Some say that knowing that the "blessed hope" of rapture is imminent gives Christians greater security. It is sometimes stated that this security allows believers to live an enhanced Christian life. But is there any proof? After all, a primary criticism of the arrogant Laodicea Church is that they place too much emphasis on their own security (Revelation 3:17). When Christ appears, there is a requirement that His people must be prepared. John the Baptist was sent in the first century (Matthew 3:1-6). Two witnesses in Jerusalem will prepare Israel for His second coming (Revelation 11:3-6). Those of us with military experience can witness to the fact that when a senior officer is to visit - those who do not prepare in advance will likely regret not having done so. How much exponentially more must we be prepared for the next appearance of Christ. With the early, partial rapture countless believers will be caught off guard. The Sardis Church is an example of believers who are not ready: if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you. (Revel
