Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique, self-contained resource is the first volume on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy in the eMagRes Handbook series. The 27 chapters cover the theoretical principles, the common experimental techniques, and many important application areas of modern EPR spectroscopy. EPR Spectroscopy: Fundamentals and Methods is presented in four major parts: A: Fundamental Theory, B: Basic Techniques and Instrumentation, C: High-Resolution Pulse Techniques, and D: Special Techniques. The first part of the book gives the reader an introduction to basic continuous-wave (CW) EPR and an overview of the different magnetic interactions that can be determined by EPR spectroscopy, their associated theoretical description, and their information content. The second provides the basics of the various EPR techniques, including pulse EPR, and EPR imaging, along with the associated instrumentation. Parts C and D builds on parts A and B and offer introductory accounts of a wide range of modern advanced EPR techniques, with examples of applications. The last two parts presents most of the new advances that do not appear in most of the classical EPR textbooks that focus on CW EPR. EPR Spectroscopy: Fundamentals and Methods contains, in concise form, all the material needed to understand state-of-the-art EPR spectroscopy at the graduate school/research level, whilst the editors have ensured that it presents the topic at a level accessible to newcomers to the field and others who want to know its range of application and how to apply it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to present the necessary quantum chemical methods for both resonance types in one handy volume, emphasizing the crucial interrelation between NMR and EPR parameters from a computational and theoretical point of view. Here, readers are given a broad overview of all the pertinent topics, such as basic theory, methodic considerations, benchmark results and applications for both spectroscopy methods in such fields as biochemistry, bioinorganic chemistry as well as with different substance classes, including fullerenes, zeolites and transition metal compounds. The chapters have been written by leading experts in a given area, but with a wider audience in mind. The result is the standard reference on the topic, serving as a guide to the best computational methods for any given problem, and is thus an indispensable tool for scientists using quantum chemical calculations of NMR and EPR parameters. A must-have for all chemists, physicists, biologists and materials scientists who wish to augment their research by quantum chemical calculations of magnetic resonance data, but who are not necessarily specialists in these methods or their applications. Furthermore, specialists in one of the subdomains of this wide field will be grateful to find here an overview of what lies beyond their own area of focus.

Book excerpt: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Electron Spin Resonance Spectra, Index for 1958-1963 contains 8000 references to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra published in 67 worldwide journals and two collections from 1958 to 1963. This index aims to provide a means for the location of published NMR and ESR spectra, listing references as simple as possible for cross-sectioning purposes of average users. Each reference consists of an abbreviated symbol of the journal, volume number, and page where an actual spectrum of the compound mentioned may be found. This compilation is arranged alphabetically according to the compounds whose spectra are given. In the case of inorganic compounds, solution spectra are normally indexed according to the ion that contributes the significant absorption. This publication is suitable for chemistry students and specialists researching on NMR and ESR.

Book excerpt: This book describes in mathematical terms the extraction of useful information from ESR spectra as applied to paramagnetic organic, inorganic and organometalic molecules. It lays a firm groundwork for understanding more sophisticated experiments, which the availability of newer commercial instruments has made possible. It takes the reader step by step through obtaining and interpretating ESR spectra of paramagnetic molecules. The mathematical basis of each observed phenomena are detailed and examples given. In particular there is a detailed discussion of 2nd order pertubation theory treatment of the Spin Hamiltonian for non-coincident G and A axes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TWENTY-FIVE years ago in Russia, Zavoisky made the first experimen tal observation of electron spin resonances; and a year later Purcell, Torrey and Pound at Harvard and Bloch, Hansen and Packard at Stanford ('The Harvard of the West') observed nuclear magnetic resonances for the first time. In both cases (ESR and NMR) the phenomena had been previously predicted, and Gorter - surely one of the most unlucky experimenters of our time - had made his noble attempts to detect magnetic resonances. Purcell et aZ. , having beaten their radar swords into scientific ploughshares, used a re 3 sonant coaxial cavity, filled the inductive part with 850 cm of paraffin, and produced a resonance with a signal-to-noise ratio of 20. They predicted that the sensitivity could be increased several hundred-fold and foresaw applications in determining magnetic mo ments, investigating spin-lattice coupling and measuring magnetic fields. Their letter reached the editor of Phys. Rev. on Christmas Eve 1945, and the basis of NMR in the solid state was laid. Bloch et aZ. , fortunately working independently, established the entirely different, crossed-coil approach to the observation of NMR in a water sample, which they doped with paramagnetic ions to reduce the relaxation times. They had laid the foundation of liquid-state NMR. Their letter to Phys. Rev. was received on 29 January 1946.
