Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GEORGE CHRISTOU Indiana University, Bloomington I am no doubt representative of a large number of current inorganic chemists in having obtained my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the 1970s. It was during this period that I began my continuing love affair with this subject, and the fact that it happened while I was a student in an organic laboratory is beside the point. I was always enchanted by the more physical aspects of inorganic chemistry; while being captivated from an early stage by the synthetic side, and the measure of creation with a small c that it entails, I nevertheless found the application of various theoretical, spectroscopic and physicochemical techniques to inorganic compounds to be fascinating, stimulating, educational and downright exciting. The various bonding theories, for example, and their use to explain or interpret spectroscopic observations were more or less universally accepted as belonging within the realm of inorganic chemistry, and textbooks of the day had whole sections on bonding theories, magnetism, kinetics, electron-transfer mechanisms and so on. However, things changed, and subsequent inorganic chemistry teaching texts tended to emphasize the more synthetic and descriptive side of the field. There are a number of reasons for this, and they no doubt include the rise of diamagnetic organometallic chemistry as the dominant subdiscipline within inorganic chemistry and its relative narrowness vis-d-vis physical methods required for its prosecution.
Download or read book Chemistry of Tin written by P.J. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In common with the editor of the first edition, my own personal involvement with tin chemistry began when I had the privilege of studying for a PhD degree under the supervision of Professor Alwyn G. Davies FRS at University College London (UCL) almost exactly 30 years ago. Then, following 21 years' service with the International Tin Research Institute, it was a great pleasure for me when the wheel turned full circle and, in 1994, Alwyn - now an Emeritus Professor - asked me to return to UCL as an Honorary Research Fellow in the Chemistry Department. One of my first tasks was when I received an invitation from Blackie A&P to edit the second edition of the Chemistry of Tin, which I was delighted to accept, since it enabled me to continued my life-long interest in tin chemistry and to maintain contact with my former friends and colleagues, many of whom have contributed to this book.
Book Synopsis High Resolution NMR Spectroscopy by : Jochen Autschbach
Download or read book High Resolution NMR Spectroscopy written by Jochen Autschbach and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-06-08 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For heavy atoms, and for molecules with heavy atoms, a theoretical description of the electronic structure needs to consider the finite speed of light and Einstein’s special relativity. This chapter provides a brief introduction to special relativity and to relativistic methods in quantum chemistry. It is shown how these methods can be used to calculate NMR chemical shifts and indirect spin–spin coupling constants (J-coupling). A number of examples are discussed where relativistic effects have a significant influence on these NMR parameters. In some cases for example, for indirect spin–spin coupling involving 199Hg, relativistic effects may be larger than the total value calculated with a nonrelativistic method.

Book Synopsis Chemistry of Precious Metals by : S.A. Cotton
Download or read book Chemistry of Precious Metals written by S.A. Cotton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some 20 years ago, I was privileged to share in writing a book on the descriptive chemistry of the 4d, 5d, 4f and 5f metals that included these eight elements within its compass (S.A. Cotton and F.A. Hart, The Heavy Transition Elements, Macmillan, 1975). This volume shares the same aim of covering the descriptive chemistry of silver, gold and the six platinum metals in some detail at a level suitable for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate study. It does not attempt to be a comprehensive treatise on the chemistry of these metals. It attempts to fill a slot between the general text and the in-depth review or monograph. The organometallic chemistry is confined to a-bonded com pounds in normal oxidation states; compounds with IT-bonding ligands are generally excluded. Their inclusion would have increased the length of the book considerably and, moreover, their recent chemistry has been extensively and expertly reviewed in the new Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry, II, eds G. Wilkinson, F.G.A. Stone and E.W. Abel, Pergamon, Oxford, 1995.

Since then, the Working Group M.O. has served as a forum to bring together soil chemists, soil mineralogists, soil microbiologists, soil biochemists, soil physi cists and environmental, ecological, and health scientists. The objective of the Working Group M.O. is to promote research, teaching, and also the exchange of technology concerning the knowledge and the impact of the interactions between minerals-organics and microorganisms on environmental quality, agricultural sustainability, and ecosystem "health". This group is first a scientific group as defined just previously, but it also intends to develop exchange and transfer between scientists and engineers. The first International Meeting organized by Professor P. M. Huang, was held in Edmonton, Canada, in August 1992, where 87 papers were presented by scientists from 20 countries. Following this meeting, a two volume book was edited by P. M. Huang, J. Berthelin, J.-M. Bollag, W. B. McGill, and A. L. Page, entitled "Environmental impact of soil component interaction" : Volume I "Natural and anthropogenic organic-volume II "Metals, other inorganic and microbial activities", and published by c.R.C. Book excerpt: Spectroscopy in Inorganic Chemistry, Volume I describes the innovations in various spectroscopic methods that are particularly effective in inorganic chemistry studies. This volume contains nine chapters; each chapter discusses a specific spectroscopic method, their fundamental principles, methods, instrumentation, advantages disadvantages, and application. Chapter 1 covers some of the general principles and experiments that have been used in the recording and interpretation of crystal spectra of molecules that contain transition-metal ions. Chapter 2 illustrates the application of spectroscopic techniques to the photochemistry of small inorganic molecules, non-transition-metal compounds, and transition-metal complexes. The remaining chapters examine several spectroscopic methods, such as matrix isolation, mass, soft X-ray, and Mössbauer spectroscopies, high-resolution NMR, and nuclear quadrupole resonance, with a particular emphasis on their effective application in inorganic chemistry studies. This book will be of great benefit to inorganic chemists, spectroscopists, and inorganic chemistry teachers and students.
