Book excerpt: 'The NME mattered to all those generations who grew up with music at the centre of their universe. The NME never had a truer chronicler than Pat Long.' Tony Parsons Since it was founded in 1952, the New Musical Express has played a central part in the British love affair with pop music. Snotty, confrontational, enthusiastic, sarcastic: the NME landing on the doormat every Wednesday was the high point of any music fan’s week, whether they were listening to The Beatles, Bowie or Blur. The Sex Pistols sang about it, Nick Hornby claims he regrets not working for it and a whole host of household names – Tony Parsons and Julie Burchill, Nick Kent and Mick Farren, Steve Lamacq and Stuart Maconie – started their career writing for it. This authoritative history, written by former assistant editor, Pat Long, is an insider's account of the high times and low lives of the world's most famous, and most influential, music magazine. The fights, the bands, the brawls, the haircuts, the egos and much more. This is the definitive – and first – book about the infamous NME.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NME Music Quiz Book features around 1,000 questions spanning the 66 years of the cult magazine. A perfect book for music aficionados of all ages. Put your pop and rock knowledge to the test! Rediscover your favourite music and memories, from punk to EDM, the Rolling Stones to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, pop videos to iconic festival headliners, with questions crossing multiple genres and decades. Sourced directly from the NME archive for added authority, the quizzes are supplemented with exclusive quotes and facts from the original magazine. An extract from the book: "We're at something of a watershed in pop history. There's never been so much music readily available, both ancient and cutting–edge modern, and we're consuming it in more ways than ever. But what place is there for albums in a world where fans can simply cherry–pick their favourite tunes and forget the rest? Is it simply the artists' love of the album that keeps it alive? And have we seen the last of the seismic currents that reshape pop into something strange and new? Some might say that new music is too heavily in debt to old music to be truly original: to paraphrase one of the Eighties' most endearing left–field acts, Did Pop Eat Itself? Whatever the truth, it seems like an excellent time to look back on the ground we've covered since rock'n'roll's infancy. From Christmas novelties to the blackest of metal, timeless soundtracks to music's on–off relationship with the Grim Reaper, this quiz book is a celebration of pop's diversity, eccentricity and downright oddness. Within these pages, you'll find brain–teasers on some 70 years of music–making, including sections on major artists and genres, best–selling releases, highly dubious rock–star behaviour, foot–in–mouth disease and the urban legends that we dearly hope are true. Hopefully, it'll feel like a good maze – offering easy progress one moment and head–scratching dead ends the next. So dive in! And if these 62 quizzes inspire you to broaden your own musical radar, all the better."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2004 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1.3, LMU Munich (Amerika Institut), course: Proseminar: Popular Music and American Society, 1955 - Present: an Introduction, language: English, abstract: In this essay I want to discuss why rocknroll emerged at all and also why it did so at a certain time. When did the rocknroll era really begin? Was it when the first rocknroll record was released or was it when a certain song was named “a rocknroll song” for the first time? If you prefer the second option, the date is pretty easily marked. The story is, that in 1952 Billy Ward was giving an interview to the disc jockey Allan Freed at a radio station. When Wards Song “Sixty Minute Man” was running, Freed tried to find a name for this totally new kind of music and did so when he heard the lyrics of the song saying “I rock ‘em roll ’em all night long” (see Ennis 18). But you could just as well take the release of “Rocket 88” in 1951 as the beginning of the rocknroll era, because that was the first rocknroll song. So far we have the years 1951 and 1952 to choose from. Maybe a certain date will turn up while we examine why rocknroll emerged at all. Starting with an essay by Richard Peterson this leads us to the question: In how far is the situation of the music industry of the 1950s responsible for the emergence of rocknroll? [...]

Book excerpt: DON'T MISS SYLVIA PATTERSON'S BRAND NEW MEMOIR, SAME OLD GIRL, COMING SPRING 2023 SHORTLISTED FOR THE COSTA BIOGRAPHY AWARD 2016 'Celebratory and elegiac' Guardian 'A roller-coaster memoir' Sunday Times 'Funny, anecdote-packed, nostalgic but also very touching' The Pool 'Patterson fillets out the pretentious bones of pop, leaving its glistening meat' Observer This is a three-decade survivor's tale . . . a scenic search for elusive human happiness through music, magazines, silly jokes, stupid shoes, useless blokes, hopeless homes, booze, drugs, love, loss, A&E, death, disillusion and hope. In 1986, Sylvia Patterson boarded a train to London armed with a tea-chest full of vinyl records, a peroxide quiff and a dream: to write about music, for ever. She got her wish. Escaping a troubled home, Sylvia embarks on a lifelong quest to discover The Meaning of It All. The problem is she's mostly hanging out with flaky pop stars, rock 'n' roll heroes and unreliable hip-hop legends. As she encounters music's biggest names, she is confronted by glamour and tragedy; wisdom and lunacy; drink, drugs and disaster. And Bros. Here is Madonna in her Earth Mother phase, flinging her hands up in horror at one of Sylv's Very Stupid Questions. Prince compliments her shoes while Eminem threatens to kill her. She shares fruit with Johnny Cash, make-up with Amy Winehouse and several pints with the Manics' lost soul-man Richey Edwards. She finds the Beckhams fragrant in LA, a Gallagher madferrit in her living room and Shaun Ryder and Bez as you'd expect, in Jamaica. From the 80s to the present day, I'm Not with the Band is a funny, barmy, utterly gripping chronicle of the last thirty years in music and beyond. It is also the story of one woman's wayward search for love, peace and a wonderful life. And whether, or not, she found them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The birth of rock 'n roll ignited a firestorm of controversy--one critic called it "musical riots put to a switchblade beat"--but if it generated much sound and fury, what, if anything, did it signify? As Glenn Altschuler reveals in All Shook Up, the rise of rock 'n roll--and the outraged reception to it--in fact can tell us a lot about the values of the United States in the 1950s, a decade that saw a great struggle for the control of popular culture. Altschuler shows, in particular, how rock's "switchblade beat" opened up wide fissures in American society along the fault-lines of family, sexuality, and race. For instance, the birth of rock coincided with the Civil Rights movement and brought "race music" into many white homes for the first time. Elvis freely credited blacks with originating the music he sang and some of the great early rockers were African American, most notably, Little Richard and Chuck Berry. In addition, rock celebrated romance and sex, rattled the reticent by pushing sexuality into the public arena, and mocked deferred gratification and the obsession with work of men in gray flannel suits. And it delighted in the separate world of the teenager and deepened the divide between the generations, helping teenagers differentiate themselves from others. Altschuler includes vivid biographical sketches of the great rock 'n rollers, including Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Buddy Holly--plus their white-bread doppelgangers such as Pat Boone. Rock 'n roll seemed to be everywhere during the decade, exhilarating, influential, and an outrage to those Americans intent on wishing away all forms of dissent and conflict. As vibrant as the music itself, All Shook Up reveals how rock 'n roll challenged and changed American culture and laid the foundation for the social upheaval of the sixties.
