Book excerpt: Corn yields in the Coastal Plain tended to remain constant at populations of 21,000 and 28,000 plants per acre for both short season and full season hybrids. Yields of full season hybrids on upland Piedmont soils were not greatly increased by using populations greater than 12.000 to 16,000 plants per acre. Yields of full season hybrids were not increased by use of 21-inch rows as compared with 42-inch rows. Yields of short season hybrids were higher in 21-inch rows as compared with 42-inch rows. Short season hybrids used in the row width studies were not as tall and did not have as long leaves as the full season hybrids. Thus planting the smaller hybrids in narrower rows gave better ground cover which probably reduced evaporation. A nitrogen rate of 150 Ibs N per acre was adequate for high corn yields on sandy Coastal Plain soils. Yield increase from a higher nitrogen rate was only obtained with a short season hybrid at 28,000 plants per acre in 21-inch rows when moisture conditions were ideal. Under these conditions 200 Ibs N per acre gave the highest yields. On the Portsmouth soil nitrogen rates of 100 to 150 Ibs per acre were adequate for yields. (...).
