Book Synopsis Jew Be Or Not Jew Be by : Peter J. Oszmann
Download or read book Jew Be Or Not Jew Be written by Peter J. Oszmann and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-12 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jew Be or Not Jew Be is an autobiographical novel, a compelling true story of an assimilated Hungarian middle class Jewish family. It documents aspects of life, escape and survival within the history of the Holocaust. Seen through the eyes of a young child it describes sometimes sad, sometimes poignant events and at other times hilariously comic moments of sheer defiance in the face of adversity. It is a moving testament not only to Man's inhumanity to Man, but also to the human will to survive. Rabbi Julia Neuberger commented in a letter to the author about his book: "I can't believe how long I've had your book-and here is at last my view on it. First, I much enjoyed it, if enjoyed is the right term.-I learned, laughed, and cried."

This book was released on 2009 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Latina/o Performing Arts of Moraga, Tropicana, Fusco, and Bustamante demonstrates the crucial significance of looking at theatrical performance for rethinking critical inquiry. Leah Garland closely analyzes the theoretical tools with which prominent theater artists - Cherríe Moraga, Carmelita Tropicana, Coco Fusco, and Não Bustamante - challenge neocolonial parameters for self-examination. Garland shows how the self-affirmative maneuvers that these artists deploy reconceptualize the subject in literary theory.

Book Synopsis Racism on the Victorian Stage by : Hazel Waters
Download or read book Racism on the Victorian Stage written by Hazel Waters and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are many studies of nineteenth-century race theories and scientific racism, the attitudes and stereotypes expressed in popular culture have rarely been examined, and then only for the latter half of the century. Theatre then was mass entertainment and these forgotten plays, hastily written, surviving only as hand-written manuscripts or cheap pamphlets, are a rich seam for the cultural historian. Mining them to discover how 'race' was viewed and how the stereotype of the black developed and degraded, sheds a fascinating light on the development of racism in English culture. In the process, this book helps to explain how a certain flexibility in attitudes towards skin colour, observable at the end of the eighteenth century, changed into the hardened jingoism of the late nineteenth. Concentrating on the period 1830 to 1860, its detailed excavation of some seventy plays makes it invaluable to the theatre historian and black studies scholar.
Book Synopsis Satirizing Modernism by : Emmett Stinson
Download or read book Satirizing Modernism written by Emmett Stinson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satirizing Modernism examines 20th-century novels that satirize avant-garde artists and authors while also using experimental techniques associated with literary modernism. These novels-such as Wyndham Lewis's The Apes of God, William Gaddis's The Recognitions, and Gilbert Sorrentino's Imaginative Qualities of Actual Things-were under-recognized and received poor reviews at the time of publication, but have increasingly been acknowledged as both groundbreaking and deeply influential. Satirizing Modernism analyzes these novels in order to present an alternative account of literary modernism, which should be viewed neither as a radical break with the past nor an outmoded set of aesthetics overtaken by a later postmodernism. In self-reflexively critiquing their own aesthetics, these works express an unconventional modernism that both revises literary history and continues to be felt today.
