Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative collection contains writings by some thirty of the most significant Chinese writers of the period between 1919 and 1949. The three decades from which these pieces are drawn encompass most of the Republican period, a tumultuous era in Chinese history in which modernization and republicanism coexisted with classical culture. Thematically, these xiaopin wen, or modern Chinese essays, differ significantly from the more social and political fiction of the May Fourth movement. Their scope varies, from ruminations on broader existential issues to more personal contemplations on everyday life, often delving into issues of morality and interpersonal relations. Although described as "essays", they are not restrained by the formal, expository connotations of this English term; rather, their tone is more intimate, reflective, and at times witty or tinged with melancholy.

This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frequent appearance of androgyny in Ming and Qing literature has long interested scholars of late imperial Chinese culture. A flourishing economy, widespread education, rising individualism, a prevailing hedonism--all of these had contributed to the gradual disintegration of traditional gender roles in late Ming and early Qing China (1550-1750) and given rise to the phenomenon of androgyny. Now, Zuyan Zhou sheds new light on this important period, offering a highly original and astute look at the concept of androgyny in key works of Chinese fiction and drama from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The work begins with an exploration of androgyny in Chinese philosophy and Ming-Qing culture. Zhou proceeds to examine chronologically the appearance of androgyny in major literary writing of the time, yielding novel interpretations of canonical works from The Plum in the Golden Vase, through the scholar-beauty romances, to The Dream of the Red Chamber. He traces the ascendance of the androgyny craze in the late Ming, its culmination in the Ming-Qing transition, and its gradual phasing out after the mid-Qing. The study probes deviations from engendered codes of behavior both in culture and literature, then focuses on two parallel areas: androgyny in literary characterization and androgyny in literati identity. The author concludes that androgyny in late Ming and early Qing literature is essentially the dissident literati's stance against tyrannical politics, a psychological strategy to relieve anxiety over growing political inferiority.

Book excerpt: Based on first-hand experience, this entrancing narrative of daily life in Peking in the first decades of this century makes vivid the milieu of a fictional family--the traditionally-minded, lower middle- class family of Wu. The author uses experiences of the Wu family's son from birth to marriage to convey in rich detail a vanished way of life, including children's games, nursery rhymes, and education; flowers and foods; street entertainers, folk amusements, and acrobatics; religions; jokes and poems; and a great deal more. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evil Hammering at the Door By Clive N. Ramkeesoon Tragedy strikes a Korean family when their missing daughter, Serena, is found comatose in a hospital. After a long convalescence, she is only partially healed when Stephen, a Canadian, arrives to spend his long vacation in her home. They fall in love and get married, but immigration regulations force them apart. Stephen must return to Canada immediately; Serena to her Korean farm. Against flashes of Korean and Canadian landscape and scenes of life in both those countries some extraordinary events occur. They include adultery, suicide, gang-rape, incest, murder, blindness, prophecy and cataclysm. Themes of love, betrayal, forgiveness, shame and isolation are seamlessly woven into the tapestry of evil. The dark episodes hang over the events of the story that is relieved only by Serena’s happy childhood, her karate training, her home-pigeon racing, her humanitarian projects, her artistry as a painter, the medical milestones of her recovery from PTSD and her numerous forays into the Christocentric heart of nature. A few examples of literary analysis make for interesting reading.
