Book excerpt: Why is TALOIA bandied about in clinics and on wards? Who - or what - is DAN? If someone mentioned Practice Based Commissioning or the Standardised Mortality Ratio, would you understand what they meant? Like any specialised area, the NHS generates clouds of terms, acronyms and shorthand vital for those in the know but virtually impenetrable to outsiders or those new to healthcare. New acronyms or the jargon of areas outside their immediate expertise can be utterly baffling even to old hands. This book brings together an up-to-date, clearly explained glossary of specialised terminology and acronyms used at all levels of the NHS, from primary care surgeries to hospital wards, admin departments to executive boardrooms. It is essential reading for workers in the NHS at all levels, including managers, administrators and clinical professionals, and for managers and staff at commercial companies working with the NHS. Specialty registrars and consultants can also find this information, and much more, in The Doctor's Handbook Parts 1 and 2, by the same author. NHS Jargon Explained will also be of interest to campaigners, patient interest groups, researchers and journalists, and patients and their relatives may also find it useful and enlightening! 'There is no more important time than now to have a quick reference guide that enables the greatest number of people to quickly come to terms with the language of the health service. I welcome this book for being both comprehensive and concise'- from the Foreword by Sir Ian Carruthers

This modernization programme represents the most radical and ambitious restructuring of the NHS since its inception in 1948. The new Primary Care Groups and Trusts (PCG/Ts) are the main organizational mechanism for delivering the modernization agenda and are therefore key to the success or otherwise of these reforms.

Book excerpt: The NHS is more than a good idea. It is beautiful. And it is you. The importance of the NHS – and the public’s affection for it – cannot be overstated, as seen through the COVID-19 pandemic. The author and his family of medics have lived and breathed the NHS, from before 1948, its birth and its history to date. But this book is for people who do not come from this medical background and do not have this life experience. Thus there are three target audiences. Firstly, it can contribute to A level study of the NHS, and career advice for 6th form students who are applying to university for a degree in healthcare. Secondly, it will educate health and social care professionals in training and in their early years. So they can start with the knowledge that the author had when he went to university in 1979. Thirdly, the book is for everyone else, who want to know how it all fits together, and in this way, improve their healthcare, and that of their family.

Book excerpt: Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) are responsible at the local NHS level for the statutory "duty of care", largely through implementing clinical governance. The concept of clinical governance aims to improve continuously the overall standard of clinical care; reduce variations in outcomes of, and access to, services; and ensure that local decisions are based on the most up to date evidence of what is known to be effective. The key principles of clinical governance are: a coherent approach to quality improvement, clear lines of accountability for clinical quality systems and effective processes for identifying and managing risk and addressing poor performance. Clinical governance, implemented effectively, can provide PCT Chief Executives with assurance that healthcare, whether provided directly or commissioned from other providers, is both safe and of good quality. This report finds that the organisational structures and processes for clinical governance have largely been put in place at PCT level. But progress in implementing the different components of clinical governance varies both within and between PCTs. More needs to be done to provide assurance about the performance of General Practitioners and the systems which protect the safety of patients. Key features of those PCTs that can demonstrate consistent improvements in quality include effective clinical leadership, maintaining the capacity to deliver services, ensuring the quality of the patient experience and improving services based on lessons from complaints and patient safety incidents. The higher performing PCTs are characterised by: availability and accessibility of information to support evidence-based medicine; all staff appraised against an agreed work and development programme; service users involved in service development; clear action plans developed in response to clinical risks; and underperformance by clinical staff addressed by clear management procedures.

Part II complements the first, examining in detail cost containment policies in each EU Member State. The country-based chapters refer to developments up to mid-1997.

Book excerpt: Being 'world class' is inextricably linked to being competitive. In this new book the author builds upon Becoming World Class and incorporates his experience of introducing fundamental changes in a number of major organisations. The author discusses how organisations can compete when competitors have also introduced the management innovations of recent years and become `lean'. He argues that success comes not from making business processes more efficient but from the contribution of people and he examines how companies can successfully motivate employees. This is an innovative book which puts forward a new approach for regional development in a global context. The author argues that the three elements of society, the firm and individual must work together to achieve economic growth in these competitive and changing times.
