Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The materials we turn to for the construction of our literary pasts - the texts, performances, and discussions selected for storage and cataloguing in archives - shape what we know and teach about literature today. The ways in which archival materials have been structured into forms of preservation, in turn, impact their transference and transformation into new forms of presentation and re-presentation. Exploring the production of culture through and outside of the archives that preserve and produce CanLit as an entity, CanLit Across Media asserts that CanLit arises from acts of archival, critical, and creative analysis. Each chapter investigates, challenges, and provokes this premise by examining methods of "unarchiving" Canadian and Indigenous literary texts and events from the 1950s to the present. Engaging with a remediated archive, or "unarchiving," allows the authors and editors to uncover how the materials that document past acts of literary production are transformed into new forms and experiences in the present. The chapters consider literature and literary events that occurred before live audiences or were broadcast, and that are now recorded in print publications and documents, drawings, photographs, flat disc records, magnetic tape, film, videotape, and digitized files. Showcasing the range of methods and theories researchers use to engage with these materials, CanLit Across Media reanimates archives of cultural meaning and literary performance. Contributors include Jordan Abel (University of Alberta), Andrea Beverley (Mount Allison University), Clint Burnham (Simon Fraser University), Jason Camlot (Concordia University), Joel Deshaye (Memorial University of Newfoundland), Deanna Fong (Simon Fraser University), Catherine Hobbs (Library and Archives Canada), Dean Irvine (Agile Humanities), Karl Jirgens (University of Windsor), Marcelle Kosman (University of Alberta), Jessi MacEachern (Concordia University), Katherine McLeod (Concordia University), Linda Morra (Bishop's University), Karis Shearer (University of British Columbia, Okanagan), Felicity Tayler (University of Ottawa), and Darren Wershler (Concordia University).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Media Marathoning: Immersions in Morality is a scholarly study of the intense relationship between reader and story world, analyzing the way audiences become absorbed in a fictive text and dedicate many hours to exploring its narrative contours. Rather than view these media experiences as mindless indulgences, “media marathoning” connotes a conjoined triumph of commitment and stamina. Compared to more traditional, slower-paced media engagement patterns, media marathoning affords readers greater depth of story world engagement, maximizing the emotional and cognitive rewards of the media experience. Through immersive marathoning experiences, audiences can seriously engage with mediated questions about human nature and society, refining our orientation toward morality through internal dialogue about the story and communication with other readers as we process the meaningful journey. As digital technologies facilitate easier, user-centered access to media texts, narratives increase in complexity, and more readers seek immersive story world experiences, marathoning looks to be the new normal of media engagement. Drawing from qualitative studies of book, film, and television marathoners, along with textual analysis of commonly marathoned stories, Media Marathoning presents a holistic look at marathoning’s cultural impact.

Fans have explored the science, the politics, and the extraordinary special effects of the series. One theme continues to surface in blogs, podcasts, and convention interviews--BSG's focus on religion. BSG is a series that believes in its religion. In it, the human and Cylon characters face existential crises, do missional work, and attempt to convert one another to religious value systems. So Say We All tells the story of each season with particular focus on the values held by characters in the series, and their individual journeys toward enlightenment. The religious aspects of BSG paint a picture of how religion shapes values of life, free will, and acceptance, and influences how and why people live their lives.

This book was released on 2004-03-05 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the saxophone is an emblem of "cool" and the instrument most closely associated with jazz. Yet not long ago it was derided as the "Siren of Satan," and it was largely ignored in the United States for well over half a century after its invention. When it was first widely heard, it was often viewed as a novelty noisemaker, not a real musical instrument. In only a few short years, however, saxophones appeared in music shops across America and became one of the most important instrumental voices. How did the saxophone get from comic to cool? Bandleader Tom Brown claimed that it was his saxophone sextet, the Six Brown Brothers, who inaugurated the craze. While this boast was perhaps more myth than reality, the group was indisputably one of the most famous musical acts on stage in the early twentieth century. Starting in traveling circuses, small-time vaudeville, and minstrel shows, the group trekked across the United States and Europe, bringing this new sound to the American public. Through their live performances and groundbreaking recordings--the first discs of a saxophone ensemble in general circulation--the Six Brown Brothers played a crucial role in making this new instrument familiar to and loved by a wide audience. In That Moaning Saxophone, author and cornet player Bruce Vermazen sifts fact from legend in this craze and tells the remarkable story of these six musical brothers--William, Tom, Alec, Percy, Vern, and Fred. Vermazen traces the brothers' path through minstrelsy, the circus, burlesque, vaudeville, and Broadway musical comedy. Cleverly weaving together biographical details and the context of the burgeoning entertainment business, the author draws fascinating portraits of the pre-jazz world of American popular music, the theatrical climate of the period, and the long, slow death of vaudeville. Delving into the career of one of the key popularizers of the saxophone, That Moaning Saxophone not only illuminates the history of this novel instrument, but also offers a witty and vivid portrayal of these forgotten musical worlds.

THE GREATEST TRUTH OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS THE GOLDEN RULE. 3. EARTHLINGS ARE SOULS WITH BODIES, NOT BODIES WITH SOULS. 4. THERE IS LIFE AFTER RELIGION. IT IS CALLED SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT OR THE REVELATION OF THE SOUL. IT IS YOUR UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. 5. OUR EARTHLY LIFETIME IS JUST ONE OF MANY UNCOUNTABLE LIFETIMES ON DIFFERENT WORLDS THAT WILL EVENTUALLY BRING US TO GOD. WHEN YOU DIE YOU CAN BE REINCARNATED ON THIS WORLD, GO TO ANOTHER WORLD, GO TO A COUNCIL FOR ADVICE, OR GO TO SCHOOL. 6. ALL EARTHLY RELIGIONS ARE MAN-MADE AND ARE BASED ON MYTHOLOGY AND FAITH. 7. BY DESIGN, THE WORLD IS ABOUT MONEY, RELIGION IS ABOUT CONTROL, AND SEX IS ABOUT PLEASURE. 8. GOD IS NO RESPECT OF PERSONS. HE CARES ONLY ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE, NOT WHAT YOU DO. 9. THE ONLY JUDGMENTAL SIN ON EARTH IS DELIBERATELY HURTING ANOTHER PERSON OUT OF REVENGE, OR FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL GAIN. THIS TRUTH SHOWS THAT THE 10 COMMANDMENTS ARE A MYTH, CREATED BY MOSES TO CONTROL THE HEBREWS. 10. BE IN THE WORLD, BUT NOT OF THE WORLD. MANY ARE CALLED, BUT FEW ARE CHOSEN.

Book excerpt: The Place Called “There” We often think that our possessions are only physical or material either as a car, building, piece of land or other tangible assets. Just as physical possessions can be handed down generations, so also can spiritual secrets and assets be transferred like intellectual properties. There are hidden secrets from plain sight, revealed to those who by reason of use, have their senses exercised (Hebrews 5:14) to see, or/and hear, and then act. To these ones, it will belong and be entrusted because they are the ones who follow through the hidden secrets presented to them. ‘The Place Called There’ is a memoir of voyage of enduring faith and friendship with God, through ‘the wildernesses’ of advanced school of patience, trust, and perseverance (PTP).

Book excerpt: Who should lead us? Who should we, as a community, look to for guidance? These questions, as old as humankind, followed the Israelite community upon their return from the Exile: Should they return with Davidic kingship or without it? Their answer was King Saul. Reading Israel's first king as a riddle or the epitome of Israel's experience with kingship, King Saul's Asking explores the characterization of the figure Saul, the question of the apparent silence of God, the multiple complexities of responsibility for kingship, and the readers'opportunities for transformation. It provides a new approach to the Old Testament, supplying the reader with not only an in-depth character study but also an interesting, insightful read, and opportunity for transformation. Chapters are "Asking a Child (1 Samuel 1-3)," "Seeking a Refuge (1 Samuel 4-7)," "Request for a King (1 Samuel 8-12)," "Obedience Wanted, Wanting (1 Samuel 13-15)" "Suspecting the Dreaded (1 Samuel 16-19)" "Futile Searching (1 Samuel 20-23)," "Sensing the Silent (1 Samuel 24-26)," and "Final Questions." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The significantly expanded and updated new edition of a widely used text on reinforcement learning, one of the most active research areas in artificial intelligence. Reinforcement learning, one of the most active research areas in artificial intelligence, is a computational approach to learning whereby an agent tries to maximize the total amount of reward it receives while interacting with a complex, uncertain environment. In Reinforcement Learning, Richard Sutton and Andrew Barto provide a clear and simple account of the field's key ideas and algorithms. This second edition has been significantly expanded and updated, presenting new topics and updating coverage of other topics. Like the first edition, this second edition focuses on core online learning algorithms, with the more mathematical material set off in shaded boxes. Part I covers as much of reinforcement learning as possible without going beyond the tabular case for which exact solutions can be found. Many algorithms presented in this part are new to the second edition, including UCB, Expected Sarsa, and Double Learning. Part II extends these ideas to function approximation, with new sections on such topics as artificial neural networks and the Fourier basis, and offers expanded treatment of off-policy learning and policy-gradient methods. Part III has new chapters on reinforcement learning's relationships to psychology and neuroscience, as well as an updated case-studies chapter including AlphaGo and AlphaGo Zero, Atari game playing, and IBM Watson's wagering strategy. The final chapter discusses the future societal impacts of reinforcement learning.
