While contemporary culture may be fixated on youthful sex appeal, the most complex and interesting characters in dramatic literature have been (and still are) those over 40 years old. Whether it's Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman , Gorgeous Teitelbaum in Wendy Wasserstein's Sisters Rosenzweig , or Troy the former big leaguer in August Wilson's Fences , these characters have a texture and a gravitas that can't be found in younger roles. This volume selects from classical sources like Euripides' Medea and Shakespeare's King Lear , as well as contemporary ones like Yasmina Reza's God of Carnage , Christopher Durang's Vonya and Sonia and Masha and Spike , and David Lindsay-Abaire's Good People , to provide a challenging and enriching experience for both the dedicated professional and the inquisitive amateur.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a wealth of monologue anthologies currently on the shelves for the younger female actor, but for those aged over forty looking for an audition piece that reflects their age - and all of the thoughts, feelings and language that come with it - there is almost nothing; and certainly nothing that accurately reflects their diversity. Women Are Like Wine was curated by Victoria Taylor Roberts, a multiple award winning writer, expressly to address this void and to offer older female actors a unique, more realistic representation of themselves during auditions. Women Are Like Wine includes 39 brand new pieces by established and emerging writers (many of whom have won multiple awards in film, TV, theatre and radio, with some also having been working actors). Ranging from 40 to old age, the contemporary monologues capture the changing female experience in a way that no other audition anthology has previously, exploring not just the pleasures and pitfalls of ageing, but also the glorious differences in women's culture, ethnicity and sexual identity. Previously unproduced, each monologue offers the chance to bring to life an, as yet, undiscovered character, free from comparison to the famous renditions that more well-worn monologues for 'older women' often suffer.

In this thoughtfully curated collection, teen actors preparing for an audition or searching for quality scenes to hone their chops will find a wealth of contemporary material from American and British plays. Almost all of the works are from the year 2000 to the recent 2014 Broadway production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night-Time , chosen from the point of view of a professional acting teacher, director, and casting director. Along with covering the basics of how to match the best monologue to the actor and how to approach the rehearsal and performance of the piece, the book provides a synopsis of each play, a character description, and a list of questions specific to each monologue that will direct the actor toward shaping a complex, honest, and thoughtful performance that has a strong emotional connection, a clear arc, and playable actions. There is also a brief lesson on appropriate rehearsal behavior and preparation.

Parker has created a new volume of refreshing monologues that explores the fantastic side of a young person's imagination. From magical creatures, to time-travel, to life on Mars, Fantasy Monologues for Young Actors offers 52 comedic and heartfelt monologues that will tap into every inch of an actor's creativity. These monologues were created specifically for actors and acting students ages 7-14 and for the teachers, directors and acting coaches who work with them. These monologues feature: A broad range of unique circumstances and emotions: comedic, inspirational, heartfelt, pompous, lonely, curious, etc. Gender-neutral, so every monologue could be performed by a boy or a girl Emotional arcs and strong outcomes to challenge your actors and keep audiences engaged Modern day topics with contemporary language that really relate to kids today Perfect for auditions, as short performance pieces and for use in the classroom Here are two sample monologues from the book: PAIL OF WATER (Your character is either Jack or Jill from the well-known nursery rhyme.) You make one mistake and people never forget it. Seriously. I mean, yeah, Jack [or Jill] and me went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. And, yes, one of us fell down and broke his crown and yeah, yeah, the other one came tumbling after. And no - we did not bring back any water. We did not succeed in our mission. And, if I was to be totally honest, we also lost the bucket. But come on. It wasn't like we went up the hill to save the planet from an alien invasion. There wasn't a baby up there about to be eaten by a bear. It was water. We fell down. We didn't come back with a pail of water. Someone else got up out of their chair, got a bucket, climbed up the hill and fetched a pail of water. Big deal. Life will go on. And just to set the record straight, I am perfectly capable of fetching water. I personally have fetched hundreds of pails of water, both before that incident and after. So has Jack [or Jill]. It was one time. Sheesh. Maybe it's time we all moved on. ONE DAY The less there is of something, the more precious it is. Olive trees can live for two thousand years. Giant tortoises for a hundred and fifty. And us mayflies? Twenty-four hours. How amazing is that? A whole life in a single day. You're born at five in the morning, just as the sun starts to color the sky. You get one sunrise, but it's a moment that lasts almost forever, casting a golden light across your entire childhood. You leave home at six a.m., then spend hours just exploring the world. And you can fly! Think of it - unlimited freedom in a world where every moment is a day and every perfect minute lasts a month. Years of morning light and summer breezes in a single hour. By eight or nine, you've made friendships that will last a lifetime. A passing cloud changes the face of the world. And always, there's more to see, more to do, more to live as you fly high above the water. By three you've fallen in love, and by four you have a family. Soon the sun, which has been with you always, begins to set. That soft, half- forgotten golden light of your childhood returns. Your own children fly away and newer, smaller suns appear as the night surrounds you. And always, so much left to see. So much left to do. For the first time in your life, the air goes still. The moon rises and explodes with a cool, white light. And still, so many hours - so much life - is left. Who knows what strange, new things could happen next? With so much time. So much life. So many possibilities. All in a single day.

Book excerpt: As professional directors and teachers who work with young and adult actors at the Tony Award-Winning American Conservatory Theater, Slaight and Sharrar have years of experience helping actors uncover the dynamics of the monologue, as acting exercise and as audition material. Now in their impressive third volume of age-appropriate monologues, culled from plays by substantial playwrights from an international field, the editors have assembled an impressive collection to take the actor/director/teacher to new levels of sophistication and breadth. The volume's introduction is a concise guide to today's audition obstacles and how to overcome them. As in their other award-winning collections, Slaight and Sharrar have selected character speeches from the finest dramatic literature. In addition, they have included a special section on the use of the song lyric as an exciting and useful exercise in solo work. Some of the writers included are: Edward Albee, Lee Blessing, Constance Congdon, Kia Corthron, Bob Dylan, Horton Foote, Timothy Mason, Sharman Macdonald, Lynn Nottage, Adam Rapp, George Bernard, Shaw Shakespeare, Sam Shepard, John M. Book excerpt: This second volume of Competition Monologues is, like the first volume, designed specifically for young actors 18-28 years old. The selections are again drawn from American plays produced by professional regional theatres across the nation during the past few years. Because of this the scripts, with few exceptions, cannot be readily found in published form, and the monologues are therefore infrequently performed and highly original. As a result of suggestions from numerous coaches and drama teachers across the nation who have used the first volume in their classes and workshops, the editor has included longer selections in this second volume. Hopefully this will help the general reader and theatre practitioner to gain an understanding of the range and quality of solid dramatic writing which characterizes the contemporary American theatre and enable acting instructors to use the selections as longer exercises in their general acting and theatre performance classes. The reference section has been completely updated to reflect the wealth of material which has recently appeared in the monologue and auditioning field. The combination of originality and vital dramatic writing makes this anthology unique in the field as a resource book for young actors.

This foray into the deeply serious and deeply funny (sometimes at the same time) world of life after 40 focuses primarily on scenes that depict the struggles of contemporary characters to come to terms with disappointment and obsolescence or to redeem their lives from the mistakes or miscalculations of their youth. It draws heavily on American classics like Long Day's Journey into Night , Death of a Salesman , The Price , Glengarry Glen Ross , Fences , and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? , as well as more recent classics-in-the-making like August: Osage County , Good People , and God of Carnage . There is also ample representation from British playwrights like Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard, Simon Gray, and Peter Nichols, whose work also explores this territory of growing older in a society obsessed by youth and novelty.

Book excerpt: Contemporary Monologues for Young Actors features 54 original monologues created specifically for actors and acting students ages 7-14 and for the teachers, directors and acting coaches who work with them. Written by award-winning New York City playwright Douglas M. Parker, these refreshing monologues encompass a broad range of circumstances and emotions perfect for young actors seeking new material to explore - some of which will appeal to slightly younger actors and others of which will excite slightly older actors. Here are some of the features of this book: A broad range of circumstances and emotions, from comedic to heartfelt to quirky Emotional arcs and strong endings to challenge actors and keep audiences engaged Modern day topics with contemporary language Convenient organization from "younger" to "older" as the book progresses Ideal for auditions, as short performance pieces or for use in the classroom Below are sample monologues from the book: SHARING Some people think I don't like sharing, but that isn't true at all. I love sharing. I mean, what's not to love about being able to go up to someone and say, "Hey, can I have some of that candy?" And then they give you some! Or, "Can I ride your bike for a while?" And then you get to ride their bike! Sharing is awesome. Sometimes you have to be careful, though. Like if someone comes up to me and says, "Can I have one of your cookies?" Well, if I gave them a cookie, then I might not have any cookies left to share with other people and that would be, like, the opposite of sharing. So I have to say no. Because sharing is really important. SCOUT Before we moved here, we had this big dog named Scout. Mom always said he was a total mutt, but I think he was also part collie. And maybe part golden retriever. But he was definitely at least half mutt. Scout was supposed to be the whole family's dog, but he was really mine. I mean, after school, it was me he would be waiting for. And when anyone threw his ball, I'm the one he always brought it back to. And at night, it was always my bed he slept in. But before we moved here, my Mom found out we weren't allowed to have any pets, so we had to give him away to my cousins. I don't really talk about it, but sometimes I dream about Scout. He's got his ball in his mouth and he's looking for me. And I'm saying, "Here, Scout. I'm right here." But he doesn't hear me, and he can't see me, and I'm saying, "I'm right here. Scout. I'm right here." And then, I don't know, I guess I wake up . . . I don't know if Scout dreams about me. UNIVERSE I saw on the Discovery Channel where a long time ago, before the beginning of time, the entire universe was as small as the head of a pin. And everything was inside it. Stars, planets, houses, people, cars - other pins. Everything in the universe. And then one day, this head of a pin just exploded and everything came out at like a million degrees hot and a million miles an hour. And all the stars and planets and people and cars just kept getting bigger and bigger, until they filled up all of space and all of time, just burning and melting and spinning. And as soon as I heard that, I knew that I was just like that pin, and that one day I'm gonna explode too. And when I do, fire and stars and whole worlds will come out of me and they'll be a million degrees hot and they'll travel so far and so fast that I'll never have to come back here again. Not ever...Not ever.
