Book Synopsis Thin Films in Tribology by : G. Dalmaz
Download or read book Thin Films in Tribology written by G. Dalmaz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1993-09-06 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tribological properties of relatively moving surfaces are greatly influenced by thin surface films which are of considerable importance in the design of machine components. From Victorian days when working lubricant films were calculated in tens of micrometres, to today when molecular dynamics simulations and even experiments are beginning to look at nanometre, single molecule thick films, the study of surfaces which is the tribologists' challenge has moved to finer and finer scales. The 66 papers in this volume provide reviews across the tribological field with thin films as their theme, giving a comprehensive and concise description on topics ranging from coatings and surface modification to bio-tribology. The articles provide the reader with an outline of their most effective application and potential uses in new technologies. The volume will be of interest not only to research workers and design engineers in the fields of new machine developments and lubrication, but also to engineers and students specialising in tribology.

Book Synopsis Tribology In Chemical-Mechanical Planarization by : Hong Liang
Download or read book Tribology In Chemical-Mechanical Planarization written by Hong Liang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-03-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role that friction and contact play in the processes of wear and planarization on material surfaces is central to the understanding of Chemical-Mechanical planarization (CMP) technology, particularly when applied to nanosurfaces. Tribology in Chemical-Mechanical Planarization presents a detailed account of the CMP process in a language that is suitable for tribology professionals as well as chemists, materials scientists, physicists, and other applied scientists and engineers in fields of semiconductors and microelectronics. The first half of the book is devoted to CMP, while the other focuses on the fundamentals of tribology. As the first source to integrate CMP and tribology, the book illustrates the important role that these fields play in manufacturing and technological development. It follows with an examination of tribological principles and their applications in CMP, including integrated circuits, basic concepts in surfaces of contacts, and common defects. Other topics covered in depth include basics of friction, flash temperature, lubrication fundamentals, basics of wear, polishing particles, and pad wear. The book concludes its focus with CMP practices, discussing mechanical aspects, pad materials, elastic modulus, and cell buckling. Expanding upon the science and technology of tribology to improve the reliability, maintenance, and wear of technical equipment and other material applications, Tribology in Chemical-Mechanical Planarization provides scientists and engineers with clear foresight to the future of this technology.

Book Synopsis Tribology Issues and Opportunities in MEMS by : Bharat Bhushan
Download or read book Tribology Issues and Opportunities in MEMS written by Bharat Bhushan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) is already about a billion dollars a year industry and is growing rapidly. So far major emphasis has been placed on the fabrication processes for various devices. There are serious issues related to tribology, mechanics, surfacechemistry and materials science in the operationand manufacturingof many MEMS devices and these issues are preventing an even faster commercialization. Very little is understood about tribology and mechanical properties on micro- to nanoscales of the materials used in the construction of MEMS devices. The MEMS community needs to be exposed to the state-of-the-artoftribology and vice versa. Fundamental understanding of friction/stiction, wear and the role of surface contamination and environmental debris in micro devices is required. There are significantadhesion, friction and wear issues in manufacturing and actual use, facing the MEMS industry. Very little is understood about the tribology of bulk silicon and polysilicon films used in the construction ofthese microdevices. These issues are based on surface phenomenaand cannotbe scaled down linearly and these become increasingly important with the small size of the devices. Continuum theory breaks down in the analyses, e. g. in fluid flow of micro-scale devices. Mechanical properties ofpolysilicon and other films are not well characterized. Roughness optimization can help in tribological improvements. Monolayers of lubricants and other materials need to be developed for ultra-low friction and near zero wear. Hard coatings and ion implantation techniques hold promise.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Tribology and Bridging the Gap Between the Macro- and Micro/Nanoscales by : Bharat Bhushan
Download or read book Fundamentals of Tribology and Bridging the Gap Between the Macro- and Micro/Nanoscales written by Bharat Bhushan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 961 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word tribology was fIrst reported in a landmark report by P. Jost in 1966 (Lubrication (Tribology)--A Report on the Present Position and Industry's Needs, Department of Education and Science, HMSO, London). Tribology is the science and technology of two interacting surfaces in relative motion and of related subjects and practices. The popular equivalent is friction, wear and lubrication. The economic impact of the better understanding of tribology of two interacting surfaces in relative motion is known to be immense. Losses resulting from ignorance of tribology amount in the United States alone to about 6 percent of its GNP or about $200 billion dollars per year (1966), and approximately one-third of the world's energy resources in present' use, appear as friction in one form or another. A fundamental understanding of the tribology of the head-medium interface in magnetic recording is crucial to the future growth of the $100 billion per year information storage industry. In the emerging microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) industry, tribology is also recognized as a limiting technology. The advent of new scanning probe microscopy (SPM) techniques (starting with the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope in 1981) to measure surface topography, adhesion, friction, wear, lubricant-fIlm thickness, mechanical properties all on a micro to nanometer scale, and to image lubricant molecules and the availability of supercomputers to conduct atomic-scale simulations has led to the development of a new fIeld referred to as Microtribology, Nanotribology, or Molecular Tribology (see B. Bhushan, J. N. Israelachvili and U.
