Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a new concept of cancer treatment, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has gained great attention in the last few decades. Compared to classical treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, PDT is a noninvasive, localized treatment of lesions that shows fewer side effects and has low systemic toxicity. In Chapter One, the basic mechanisms, applications and functional nanomaterials-based drug delivery systems for photodynamic therapy of cancer are reviewed. Chapter Two summarizes the application of different carbon based nanomaterials as agents for PDT and discusses current state-of-the-art use of fullerenes and their derivatives, carbon nanotubes and graphene quantum dots in PDT. Chapter Three covers the benefits and pitfalls of using chemi- and bioluminescent systems as intracellular excitation sources in PDT. Bioluminescence is a widespread natural phenomenon, which consists on emission of light resulting from the oxidation of a substrate in a reaction catalyzed by an enzyme in a biological system. Chapter Four addresses in the synthesis, characterization, and photodynamic activity of a novel hydrophobic photosensitizer 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(benzo[b]thiophene) Porphyrin (BTP) and water soluble photosensitizer 5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(7- sulfonatobenzo[b]thiophene) Porphyrin (SBTP). The authors lab is engaged in the synthesis of PDT molecules incorporating benzothiophene moiety to the meso-position of porphyrin molecules. Chapter Five discusses the Guidelines for Gastroenterological Endoscopy in Patients on Oral Antithrombotic Treatment established by the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES).These guidelines classify endoscopic interventions according to the risk of hemorrhage and specify the management of various antithrombotic drugs. Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) are classified as high-risk procedures for hemorrhage, but PDT is not included in the guidelines. Because PDT causes ischemic necrosis of tumor tissue, the authors say this could possibly be performed safely in patients on oral antithrombotic therapy. The authors of Chapter Six developed a method of the initial concentration of protoporphyrin-IX in the operated removing glioblastoma tissue using the calibration curve of the fluorescent intensity and the known Pp-IX concentration in order to estimate of the more correlated with the cure rate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive Series in Photochemical and Photobiological Sciences. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is increasingly being used amongst health practitioners in combating a variety of disease. This book reviews the current state of development of PDT, and also presents the foreseeable advancements of the field in the next decade. Practitioners in biological sciences, biotechnology and medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry will find this book an invaluable source of information. Chapters are drawn from research discusses at the 10th International Symposium on Photodynamic Therapy and Photodiagnosis in Clinical Practice in Brixen and are written and edited by leaders in the field. Mirroring the philosophy of that meeting, this book contains an informative balance of the basic sciences and clinical applications of PDT. Following an introduction to PDT, its history, and how techniques have developed, chapter serve as a practical guide for practitioners, covering topics such as sensitizer dosage and light dosage, and examples of relevant studies. The text goes further tp explore areas outside the medical field, such as the impact of PDT on society and the environment, and the economics of therapies. This book is dedicated to the memory of Professor Giulio Jori, and expert in this field, who sadly passed away on the 23rd December 2014.

Book excerpt: Compiles quantitative data on newly developed photosensizers for the photodynamic therapy of cancer and other modalities, which are otherwise scattered through the literature. The collection of reviews first considers the biophysical and biomedical definitions of photosensitivity and phototoxicity on the molecular and cellular level in order to standardize results. Then they group the available data on naturally occurring or chemically synthesized compounds into synoptic tables and graphs; describe methods of preparation and purity control, and application schedules to cell cultures and experimental animals; and project future applications of the approach. With approvals for various applications by health agencies in Europe, the US, Canada, and Japan, PDT represents the method of choice for treatment of age-related macular degeneration and is appreciated as a minimally invasive therapeutic procedure to treat skin, esophageal, head and neck, lung, and bladder cancers with high cure rates, nearly no side effects, and excellent cosmetic outcomes. Current basic research and clinical studies will help to further integrate PDT as a mainstream procedure for cancer treatment. This book presents an overview of the important medical applications of PDT, including approved treatments, clinical trials, and investigated therapies for cancer and non-malignant diseases."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last few decades, there has been a tremendous improvement in the treatment of cancer. There is evidence that this trend is continuing, based on the achievements re sulting from the combined efforts of clinicians and basic re search workers. This book is an example of such interaction and collaboration. It was prepared by authors representing both areas of work. Most of the work reported in this book is not merely theoretical, but has been experimentally successfully tested and sometimes applied clinically. This work has, however, not yet been generalized and practiced on a wide scale. Some of the results reported here relate to new aspects and open new horizons for future progress. This book will be of great value for both clinicians and basic research workers. VICC Treatment and Rehabilitation Programme ISMAIL ELSEBAI Chairman Preface The three main approaches to the treatment of cancer are surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Today, all malignant neoplasms are managed by one or more of these modalities, with varying success rates depending on the type of tumor, its degree of spread, and the knowl edge and skill with which the treatment plan has been designed and executed. In the United States of America and in Europe, approximate ly half of all cancer is presently curable, but this has been the case for approximately 20 years.

Book excerpt: Biological interactions of visible light with photosensitizers have been studied for over a century while controlled clinical applications of light and photosensitizers to treat solid tumors, known as photodynamic therapy, have been evolving since the mid 1970’s. In Photodynamic Therapy: Methods and Protocols, leading PDT scientists and clinicians provide the first comprehensive collection of methods and protocols specifically related to relevant mechanistic, dosimetric, preclinical, and clinical procedures used in current PDT research. Reflecting the growing number of studies demonstrating that immunological, tumor microenvironmental, and vascular responses are all contributing to PDT treatment outcomes, the contents of this volume move beyond the more traditional PDT concepts in order to investigate the numerous signal transduction and cell death pathways involved. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and notes which highlight tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Photodynamic Therapy: Methods and Protocols is an ideal guide for new investigators just starting out in PDT research as well as seasoned investigators changing the direction of their research with the intention of exploring this vital field of study.

Book excerpt: Photodynamic therapy utilizes photosensitizers together with irradiating light of specific wavelengths interacting with oxygen to generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species, in particular singlet oxygen, for clinical treatment of several malignant and non-malignant pathologies. Recently, enhanced photodynamic therapy was successfully achieved by using new light sources (i.e., light-emitting diode), novel functional nano-photosensitizers, oxygen supply and synergistic therapy. In addition, photodynamic therapy has been increasingly used in the fields of antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities. This two-volume work highlights the state-of-the-art in enhanced photodynamic therapy for clinical applications.
