Book Synopsis "I wish to keep a record" by : Gail G. Campbell
Download or read book "I wish to keep a record" written by Gail G. Campbell and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-04-24 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century New Brunswick society was dominated by white, Protestant, Anglophone men. Yet, during this time of state formation in Canada, women increasingly helped to define and shape a provincial outlook. I wish to keep a record is the first book to focus exclusively on the life-course experiences of nineteenth-century New Brunswick women. Gail G. Campbell offers an interpretive scholarly analysis of 28 women’s diaries while enticing readers to listen to the voices of the diarists. Their diaries show women constructing themselves as individuals, assuming their essential place in building families and communities, and shaping their society by directing its outward gaze and envisioning its future. Campbell’s lively analysis calls on scholars to distinguish between immigrant and native-born women and to move beyond present-day conceptions of such women’s world. This unique study provides a framework for developing an understanding of women's worlds in nineteenth-century North America.

Book Synopsis Corruption and Reform by : Edward L. Glaeser
Download or read book Corruption and Reform written by Edward L. Glaeser and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent corporate scandals, the United States is among the world’s least corrupt nations. But in the nineteenth century, the degree of fraud and corruption in America approached that of today’s most corrupt developing nations, as municipal governments and robber barons alike found new ways to steal from taxpayers and swindle investors. In Corruption and Reform, contributors explore this shadowy period of United States history in search of better methods to fight corruption worldwide today. Contributors to this volume address the measurement and consequences of fraud and corruption and the forces that ultimately led to their decline within the United States. They show that various approaches to reducing corruption have met with success, such as deregulation, particularly “free banking,” in the 1830s. In the 1930s, corruption was kept in check when new federal bureaucracies replaced local administrations in doling out relief. Another deterrent to corruption was the independent press, which kept a watchful eye over government and business. These and other facets of American history analyzed in this volume make it indispensable as background for anyone interested in corruption today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Their Footsteps is a Genealogical compilation of approximately 900 individuals and the story of how this Palmer Family came to be and where it came from. As one might expect, the geography of a complicated genealogy such as this one has several disparate locations of importance. Thankfully, these ancestors chose to cluster around a select few well documented locales: New England, lower New York State, Northeastern New Jersey, Central New York State and the upper Saint John River valley in New Brunswick, Canada. It also tells the story of how and why Samuel Benson Leydecker chose exile in the wilderness of New Brunswick over the prospects of staying in the Hackensack River valley of New Jersey after the American Revolution.
