Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it that one can be connected to a vast worldwide network of other people and places via digital technologies and yet also be completely alone? Kris Cohen tackles this philosophical question in Never Alone, Except for Now by exploring how contemporary technologies are changing group formations and affiliations within social life. He identifies a new form of collectivity that exists between publics, which are built through conscious acts, and populations, which are automatically constructed through the collection of Big Data. Finding traditional liberal concepts of the public sphere and neoliberal ideas of populations inadequate on their own to examine these new forms of sociality, Cohen places familiar features of the web—such as emoticons, trolling, and search engines—in conversation with artworks by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, William Gibson, Sharon Hayes, and Thomson & Craighead to more precisely articulate the affective and aesthetic experiences of living between publics and populations. This liminal experience—caught between existing as a set of data points and as individuals newly empowered to create their own online communities—explains, Cohen contends, how one is simultaneously alone and connected in ways never before possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Was Never Alone or Oporniki presents an original ethnographic stage play, based on fieldwork conducted in Russia with adults with disabilities. The core of the work is the script of the play itself, which is accompanied by a description of the script development process, from the research in the field to rehearsals for public performances. In a supporting essay, the author argues that both ethnography and theatre can be understood as designs for being together in unusual ways, and that both practices can be deepened by recognizing the vibrant social impact of interdependency animated by vulnerability, as identified by disability theorists and activists.

Book excerpt: A classic account of courage, integrity, and most of all, belonging In 1977, Natan Sharansky, a leading activist in the democratic dissident movement in the Soviet Union and the movement for free Jewish emigration, was arrested by the KGB. He spent nine years as a political prisoner, convicted of treason against the state. Every day, Sharansky fought for individual freedom in the face of overt tyranny, a struggle that would come to define the rest of his life. Never Alone reveals how Sharansky's years in prison, many spent in harsh solitary confinement, prepared him for a very public life after his release. As an Israeli politician and the head of the Jewish Agency, Sharansky brought extraordinary moral clarity and uncompromising, often uncomfortable, honesty. His story is suffused with reflections from his time as a political prisoner, from his seat at the table as history unfolded in Israel and the Middle East, and from his passionate efforts to unite the Jewish people. Written with frankness, affection, and humor, the book offers us profound insights from a man who embraced the essential human struggle: to find his own voice, his own faith, and the people to whom he could belong.

Book excerpt: IN THE FALL OF 1984, the Detroit Tigers were completing an amazing season, Bruce Springsteen was on his Born in the USA tour, and Bill Murray was busting ghosts. Otherwise, it was an average start to an average fall semester at Michigan State University. But one new student was about to set out on an incredible gridiron adventure. Who would have guessed that a single conversation with a football coach would eventually culminate in a trip to the Rose Bowl in front of more than 100,000 fans? Sean Clouse's odyssey into the world of major college football was not easy-there were countless ups and downs. Luckily for us, he documented his whole journey in a series of journal entries, written as a 20-something year old student. He didn't just write about football, but he encapsulated his entire college experience. Now more than 30 years later, Sean is revisiting those years with a need to relate his exploits and share that bygone world with future generations. His story is admittedly unique, but many current would-be athletes will surely gain important insights from his experiences, and older Spartan alums will enjoy reminiscing about the late 1980s Glory Days of MSU. His story is not intended to garner praise or accolades. It is not meant to unmask some hidden wrongdoings. It is simply meant to tell a story that describes how hard work, determination, and a bit of dumb luck can lead to marvelous results. It is a story that asks you to walk-on, but never alone.

Book excerpt: Elizabeth Haynes' new psychological thriller is a brilliantly suspenseful and shocking story in which nothing is at it seems, but everything is at stake. Sarah Carpenter lives in an isolated farmhouse in North Yorkshire and for the first time, after the death of her husband some years ago and her children, Louis and Kitty, leaving for university, she's living alone. But she doesn't consider herself lonely. She has two dogs, a wide network of friends and the support of her best friend, Sophie. When an old acquaintance, Aiden Beck, needs somewhere to stay for a while, Sarah's cottage seems ideal; and renewing her relationship with Aiden gives her a reason to smile again. It's supposed to be temporary, but not everyone is comfortable with the arrangement: her children are wary of his motives, and Will Brewer, an old friend of her son's, seems to have taken it upon himself to check up on Sarah at every opportunity. Even Sophie has grown remote and distant. After Sophie disappears, it's clear she hasn't been entirely honest with anyone, including Will, who seems more concerned for Sarah's safety than anyone else. As the weather closes in, events take a dramatic turn and Kitty too goes missing. Suddenly Sarah finds herself in terrible danger, unsure of who she can still trust. But she isn't facing this alone; she has Aiden, and Aiden offers the protection that Sarah needs. Doesn't he?

Book excerpt: Never Alone Ben L Valencia has had his share of trials and tribulations in his life. As a young boy, he felt helpless when his unfaithful father caused misery to his Christian mother. Ben was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to the Vietnam war. There, he experienced several incidents where God prevented him from getting killed. He witnessed horrific things, and returned home as a wounded veteran with PTSD. When he was on trial for a crime he didn't commit, his PTSD was used against him, and he was sent to prison. A big change in Ben's life took place one Christmas Eve as he prayed to The Lord. Yes, he still had problems, but he now knew he didn't have to face them alone. When mean hateful prisoners tried to kill him, and when he faced conflicts and illnesses in his life, The Lord was always near. Ben praises The Lord for all He has done in his life. Ben's life story is written in this book to reach those that feel hopeless during their difficult times. Feeling hopeless? Reach out to The Lord, and never be alone again!
