Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this volume Gordon McConville and Stephen Williams interpret the book of Joshua in relation to Christian theology, providing exegetical commentary and reflection on an often-troubling book that nonetheless plays a key role in the biblical drama of salvation. McConville and Williams address significant theological themes in Joshua, such as land, covenant, law, miracle, judgment (including the problem of genocide), and idolatry. They posit that the theological topics engaged in Joshua are not limited to the horizons of the author and first readers of the book, but that this ancient text is part of a much larger testimony that concerns readers yet today." ""What a marvelous book! Many commentaries on Joshua are disappointing and dispiriting; after using them, you wonder what the point was. This one helps you understand the book, helps you see the point, and sets you thinking energetically and constructively on the theological issues it raises."---John Goldingay, Fuller Theological Seminary" ""In the light of Qoheleth's tired comment---'Of making many books there is no end'---one can be forgiven for asking whether we need yet another English commentary on the book of Joshua. Having had opportunity to dive into this new one coauthored by Old Testament scholar Gordon McConville and systematic theologian Stephen Williams, I can only respond with another of Qoheleth's sayings: Two are better than one, for they have a good return for their labor.' This collaborative effort in theological exegesis is first-rate both as exegesis and as theological interpretation, brilliantly demonstrating the organic and necessary link between the two."---V. Philips Long, Regent College, Vancouver"--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wanted to be stronger, more vibrant, as a believer? Have you ever felt the church is weak when it should be strong? Have you ever felt that rampant evil should be shut down? Do you believe change is possible in the world, in the church… in you?! Joshua experienced a bad start in life—forty years in slavery. He wandered a desert for another forty years. Yet it was in and from these experiences that he discovered the believer’s strength. He escaped slavery and went on to shut evil down and conquer the Promised Land. If we want to conquer the world for God… we must allow God first to conquer us. Being Joshua shows how God uses the circumstances of life to change us into who He wants us to be. In life’s slavery and wanderings, Joshua teaches us how to synapse with God’s Spirit. Joshua teaches us that God is doing something—we are a part of it, but it is bigger than us. Joshua teaches us how to view life within the purposes of God and gain victory over our circumstances and ultimately ourselves. Joshua shows us that the weakest and the strongest believers need to encourage themselves and be strong. He reminds us, pertinent to our times, that we must also encourage each other. Joshua learned this from the Old Testament Scriptures taught in a godly family life, a community of believers, and a personal walk of faith in God. His education was by words and examples in real daily life. This book is written from a pastoral and practical perspective.

Book excerpt: Until the whispers began, Joshua was like all the other village boys, helping out at the market, making a little money from the tourists, getting up to mischief. So what if his father was the only butcher in a village of fishermen, a loner who preferred to spend his evenings carving wood? Is it true what everyone is saying -- that Joshua's father is a 'mountain man', one of the people feared and mistrusted by the villagers? When Joshua's life takes an surprising turn, he discovers that being different does matter. Maybe it's not enough to be just Joshua?

Book excerpt: The subject of this study is the prophetic history of Joshua and the first stages of the conquest of the Promised Land, as presented in the Masoretic text of the biblical Book of Joshua. The term prophetic history is employed to describe the subject because prophecy in biblical thought is not fatalistic and does not predict future events. What it does do is assert that the moral course that a society chooses to follow in the present can determine its probable but not inevitable future. The purpose of the biblical book is to inform the reader of the historical consequences of the failure to observe the terms of the divine covenant entered into between God and the children of Israel at Mount Sinai following the exodus from Egypt. Although the narrative is based on events that were believed to have taken place, the primary focus of prophetic history is on the moral implications of the decisions taken by men rather than the factual accuracy of the details of the events described which have been studied exhaustively by archaeologists and historians of the ancient world. This study is concerned primarily with what the biblical narrative purports to tell us in its own special way, and only peripherally with the issues of primary concern to the modern academic studies of biblical texts such as when the text was finalized and by whom, literary analysis of the language employed, comparative analysis of the text and other ancient literature, and other such topics, all of which are of valid intellectual interest but, with some notable exceptions, contribute little to understanding what the authors and editors of the Hebrew text as we have it are trying to convey to the reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical characters like Joshua, Caleb, and Rahab come alive, and their experiences of faith, tragedy, and triumph are made real. Joshua was twenty when Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt. He became a minister to Moses, and before he died, the great Prophet Moses anointed Joshua to lead the people to the promised land. Joshua must overcome self-doubt and uncertainty through faith and trust in God's plan. He becomes a leader who is greatly feared and also loved. He takes sixteen-year-old Tal into his care after the young man's parents perish in a landslide. Tal is not yet of age to join the warriors of Israel on the battlefield but is commissioned to remember all he sees. He becomes Joshua's minister, and they share a passion for fulfilling God's allocation of the territories to the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Joshua's first task is to take the people across the Jordan River and seek victory at the Battle of Jericho. Tal witnesses the incredible fight and accompanies Joshua on to Ai, Makkedah, Libnah, and all the places God promised to the people. Over the years, they encounter ferocious battles, miracles, and personal triumphs and defeats. Finally, after many bloody victories, Joshua and Tal reach the place of Joshua's inheritance, Timnath Serah, in the land God allocated to the Ephraim tribe. They make a home and build a welcoming city in the shade of majestic oak and cypress trees. Joshua seeks peace within his soul and strives to live out his remaining life with his family, never giving up hope for God's chosen people. This story is based on historical events, times, and places. The characters are actual and imagined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Joshua and the Rhetoric of Violence' examines the book of Joshua as a construction of national identity. This pioneering New Historicist analysis shows how the Deuteronomist used war oracle language and epic historical lore to negotiate sociopolitical boundaries. It asserts that text and context interacted in a programme consolidating King Josiah's authority in the wake of Assyrian imperial collapse. The book argues that the conquest narrative is not simple 'us against them' propaganda but a complex web of negotiations defining identity and otherness. The analysis draws on Foucault's principle that power is something exercised rather than merely possessed.

Book excerpt: Joshua Chamberlain has fascinated historians and readers ever since his service in the Civil War caused his commanding officers to sit up and take notice when the young professor was on the field. What makes a man a gifted soldier and natural leader? In this compelling book, Diane Monroe Smith argues that finding the answer requires a consideration of Chamberlain's entire life, not just his few years on the battlefield. Truly understanding Chamberlain is impossible, Smith maintains, without exploring the life of Joshua's soul mate and wife of almost fifty years, Fanny. In this dual biography, Fanny emerges as a bright, talented woman who kept Professor, General, and then Governor Chamberlain on his toes. But you don't have to take Smith's word for it. Liberally quoting from years of correspondence, the author invites you to judge for yourself.
