Book excerpt: The magnetic structure of BaFe2As2 was determined from polycrystalline neutron diffraction measurements soon after the ThCr2Si2-type FeAs-based superconductors were discovered. Both the moment direction and the in-plane antiferromagnetic wavevector are along the longer a-axis of the orthorhombic unit cell. There is only one combined magnetostructural transition at ≈140 K. However, a later single-crystal neutron diffraction work reported contradicting results. Here, we show neutron diffraction results from a single-crystal sample, grown by a self-flux method, that support the original polycrystalline work.

Book excerpt: We investigate the magnetic and iron vacancy orders in superconducting (Tl,Rb)2Fe4Se5 single-crystals by using a high-pressure neutron diffraction technique. Similar to the temperature effect, the block antiferromagnetic order gradually decreases upon increasing pressure while the Fe vacancy superstructural order remains intact before its precipitous disappearance at the critical pressure Pc = 8.3 GPa. Combined with previously determined Pc for superconductivity, our phase diagram under pressure reveals the concurrence of the block AFM order, the √5 × √5 iron vacancy order and superconductivity for the 245 superconductor. Lastly, a synthesis of current experimental data in a coherent physical picture is attempted.

Book excerpt: Single crystal neutron diffraction is used to investigate the magnetic and structural phase diagram of the electron doped superconductor Ba(Fe{sub 1-x}Co(subscript x))2As2. Heat capacity and resistivity measurements have demonstrated that Co doping this system splits the combined antiferromagnetic and structural transition present in BaFe2As2 into two distinct transitions. For x=0.025, we find that the upper transition is between the high-temperature tetragonal and low-temperature orthorhombic structures with (T{sub TO} = 99 ± 0.5 K) and the antiferromagnetic transition occurs at T{sub AF} = 93 ± 0.5 K. We find that doping rapidly suppresses the antiferromagnetism, with antiferromagnetic order disappearing at x (almost equal to) 0.055. However, there is a region of co-existence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. The effect of the antiferromagnetic transition can be seen in the temperature dependence of the structural Bragg peaks from both neutron scattering and x-ray diffraction. We infer from this that there is strong coupling between the antiferromagnetism and the crystal lattice.

Book excerpt: The inter action between the magnetic field generated by the neutron and the magnetic moment of atoms containing unpaired electrons was experimentally demonstrated for the first time about twenty years ago. The basic theory describing such an in teraction had already been developed and the first nuclear reactors with large available thermal neutron fluxes had recently been con structed. The power of the magnetic neutron interaction for in vestigating the structure of magnetic materials was immediately recognized and put to use where possible. Neutron diffraction, however, was practicable only in countries with nuclear reactors. The earliest neutron determinations of magnetic ordering were hence primarily carried out at Oak Ridge and Brookhaven in the US, at Chalk River in Canada and at Harwell in England. Diffraction patterns from polycrystalline ferromagnets and antiferromagnets are interpretable if produced by simple spin arrays. More complex magnetic scattering patterns could often be unravelled, in terms of a three-dimensional array of atomic moments, if the specimen studied is a single crystal. The devel opment of sophisticated cryogenic equipment, with independently alignable magnetic fields, opened the way to greater complexity in the magnetic structures that could be successfully determined, as did also the introduction of polarized neutron beams. By the end of the 'sixties, many countries were contributing significantly to neutron diffraction studies of a wide variety of magnetic materials.

Book excerpt: This thesis deals with the investigation of two different types of low-dimensional quantum magnets using the technique of neutron scattering.In the first part, the magnetic properties of three Mn_6-based single molecule magnets are explored by means of inelastic neutron scattering. The experimental data reveal that small structural distortions of the molecular geometry produce a significant effect on the energy level diagram and therefore on the magnetic properties of the molecules. It will be shown that the giant spin model completely fails to describe the spin level structure of the ground spin multiplets and that the excited S-multiplets play a key role in determining the effective energy barrier for the magnetization reversal.The second part of this thesis presents an in-depth study of the nuclear and magnetic properties of the quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet CaV_2O_4. The magnetism in this system arises from the partially filled t_{2g-levels of the V^{3+-ions, which in addition give an orbital degree of freedom to the system.Single crystal and powder neutron diffraction as well as neutron spectroscopy are used to determine the nuclear and magnetic structure as well as the complex excitation spectrum of CaV_2O_4. The results are analysed theoretically and from this the leading exchange paths are deduced and discussed in terms of orbital ordering.

Book excerpt: Neutron diffraction techniques have been used to study the magnetic structure of single crystals of the magnetic superconductor (T[sub c][congruent] 11K) TmNi[sub 2]B[sub 2]C. We find that below approximately 1.5K the magnetic moments order in an incommensurate spin wave with propagation vector q[sub m]= q[sub m] (a*+b*) (or q[sub m]= q[sub m] (a*+ b*)) with q[sub m]= 0.094[+-] 0.001. The spin wave is transverse with the moments aligned along the c-axis, and the observation of relatively intense higher order harmonics shows that the modulation is not purely sinusoidal but considerably squared. This incommensurate magnetic structure, which coexists with superconductivity below T[sub N][congruent] 1.5K, is quite different from those observed in the magnetic superconductors HoNi[sub 2]B[sub 2]C and ErNi[sub 2]B[sub 2]C. The origin of diffraction peaks observed in scans parallel to a* is briefly discussed.
