Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New values for thermal neutron capture cross sections of the tellurium isotopes 122Te, 124Te, 125Te, 126Te, 128Te, and 130Te are reported. These values are based on a combination of newly determined partial g-ray cross sections obtained from experiments on targets contained natural Te and gamma intensities per capture of individual Te isotopes. Isomeric ratios for the thermal neutron capture on the even tellurium isotopes are also given.

Book excerpt: Initial measurements by LLL and NBS of the ratio of the 186Os capture cross section to that of 187Os near 30 keV, provided a crucial input parameter for use of the Re-Os chronometer to estimate the duration of nucleosynthesis and hence the age of the universe. The resulting estimate of approx. = 20 billion years was much longer than the estimate from the only other method, U-Th dating. The Re-Os chronometer requires, however, not ratios of cross sections measured at laboratory temperatures, but rather the ratio appropriate to the stellar environment in which nucleosynthesis by the s-process occurs. Hence capture from low lying excited states is important. The capture cross section from the 9.75 keV first excited 187Os state must be calculated using Hauser--Feshbach calculations. These calculations require estimates of level densities, neutron transmission functions (for ground and excited states) and radiative transmission functions. These calculations can be experimentally checked by measurements of the total and inelastic cross sections near threshold. The inelastic experiment is particularly difficult because of the requirement of low background and relatively high efficiency for detection of approx. = 30 keV neutrons. A proton-recoil detector has been developed which appears to provide adequate efficiency and energy resolution. A novel filter composed of alternate layers of iron, aluminum and air has been designed to eliminate neutrons other than those in the 25 keV Fe and Al window. Major problems in background reduction persist and might be helped with a sample of 187Os of isotopic greater than that of the presently available 70% 187Os sample.

Book excerpt: A number of relatively crude attempts at measuring the /sup 187/Os(n, n') 25 keV cross section were made in order to test the feasibility of various ideas about experimental approaches and instrumentation. As a test of the feasibility of measuring the inelastic cross section near threshold, a /sup 238/U sample was used and the inelastically scattered neutrons were detected with adequate efficiency and sufficiently low background to encourage the measurement of that cross section.

Progress Report, June 1, 1975--November 30, 1975 written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of $sup 51$V(n, $gamma$) data taken at the forty-meter flight station at the Oak Ridge Electron Accelerator has been essentially completed over the neutron energy (laboratory) range 2.5-100 keV. Resonance parameters for some seventy-five resonances have been extracted. In particular, radiative widths not previously measured have been obtained for many resonances above 50 keV. Data analysis will be continued at least up to neutron energy 150 keV. As part of our continuing study of mass-dependent behavior of resonance parameters, a continuing interest in the astrophysical applications of (n, $gamma$) cross sections, and as a test of recent modifications to our analysis computer codes, data analysis (begun before the initiation of this contract) of $sup 205$Tl (n, $gamma$) and $sup 205$Tl (n, x) data was continued. This work is now essentially completed over the neutron energy range 2.5-100 keV. Departures from predictions of the statistical model for the resonance parameters have been observed. After considerable effort, it has been concluded that the Denison computer system is not adequate for certain aspects of the required data analysis. Alternate approaches to enable data analysis to be done during the academic year at Denison are being considered. The analysis of the Te(n, $gamma$) data is barely under way and will be the primary focus of efforts over the coming year. However, the tellurium (n, $gamma$) data (for mass numbers 122, 124, 125, 126, 128 and 130) have been processed from the time-of-flight form to effective cross section and a normalization to a recent natural tellurium (n, $gamma$) measurement has been completed. Progress Report, October 1, 1976--October 31, 1977 written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of the neutron capture cross section data for 51V + n has now been completed up to 215 keV. Using a few neutron widths and spin and parity assignments from the literature, the capture data has yielded estimates of radiative widths for 45 s-wave resonances and capture areas for 139 resonances. Of particular interest is the very large s-wave radiative widths for this reaction and the rather broad distribution of radiative widths. A paper describing these results is included with this report. The analysis of the neutron capture cross sections for the reaction 2°5Tl(n, .gamma.) is presently being extended to incident neutron energy 115 keV. The study of the scattered-beam sensitivity of the total energy detectors at the ORELA capture facility continues. This small but troublesome effect has now been parameterized, but the errors to be assigned to the parameterization are not yet well defined. However, in obtaining additional data for the parameterization, a series of 2°8Pb(n, .gamma.) cross section measurements were made. The analysis of these data led to results important in understanding stellar nucleosynthesis and are reported in a paper included with this report. the analysis of the Te(n, .gamma.) data proceeds methodically but slowly.

Progress Report, December 1, 1975--September 30, 1976 written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of both capture and total cross section data for /sup 205/Tl + n has been completed up to 100 keV and 250 keV for capture and total respectively. The earlier reported dependence of average total radiative width on parity has been confirmed. A sharp increase in the neutron single particle strength is observed at 50 keV. This behavior of the reduced widths is interpreted in terms of intermediate structure. The V(n, .gamma.) analysis is essentially complete up to 125 keV incident neutron energy, and a paper is in preparation. Considerable effort has been expended to estimate the sensitivity of the capture detection system to neutrons scattered and subsequently captured in the detector environs. This work has already yielded much needed information about the capture facility at ORELA and will be continued. No new information is reported for the Te(n, .gamma.) project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research relating to nuclear physics, astrophysics, and reactor technology was carried out. The nucleon-nuclear interaction was elucidated by demonstration of connection between the resonance structure revealed by high-energy-resolution neutron cross section measurements and the average nuclear potential. Measurements of the capture cross sections of the isotopes of osmium have made possible the most reliable estimate of the age of the chemical elements so far achieved. Finally, measurements were made of the 238U inelastic neutron scattering cross section near 82 keV (near the peak of the fast reactor neutron spectrum) and the capture cross sections of 1°1Ru, 1°3Rh and 1°5Pd isotopes, which, because of their high fission yields and large capture cross sections, are important poisons in fast reactors. This report is administrative in nature, and contains only isolated data.
Book Synopsis Neutron Cross Sections by : Victoria McLane
Download or read book Neutron Cross Sections written by Victoria McLane and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron Cross Sections, Volume 2: Neutron Cross Section Curves presents data for total reaction cross sections and related fission parameters as a function of incident-neutron energy. This book covers energy range from 0.01 eV to 200 MeV to exclude crystalline and magnetic effects for slow neutrons and relativistic effects for high energy neutrons. The data in this volume are grouped into sections corresponding to the element of the target nucleus in the neutron-induced reaction. These sections are ordered in increasing atomic number. Within a section, graphical data are presented for the natural element followed by the isotopes of that element in order of increasing atomic mass. A list of the reaction types is provided at the end of each section. This book also provides graphical section, wherein each graphical page is annotated on the outer edge with a symbol for an element or isotope followed by the list of the cross section data for that element or isotope. The data plotted in the graphical section are tagged by a mnemonic consisting of year, laboratory, and author's last name. This tag can be used to find the corresponding reference on the bibliographic pages.
