Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The properties of soft-matter thin films (e.g. liquid films, polymer coatings, Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers) nowadays play an important role in materials science. They are also very exciting with respect to fundamental questions: When liquids and polymers form thin films, they may be considered as trapped in a quasi-two-dimensional geometry. This confined geometry is expected to alter the properties and structures of these materials considerably. This volume is dedicated to the scattering of x-rays by soft-matter interfaces. X-ray scattering under grazing angles is the only tool for investigating these materials on atomic and mesoscopic length scales. A review of the field is presented with many examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray scattering is a well-established technique in materials science. Several excellent textbooks exist in this field, but these texts are typically written by physicists who use mathematics to make things clear. Consequently these books appeal less to students and scientists in the field of soft matter (polymers, liquid crystals, colloids, self-assembled organic systems) who usually have a more chemical-oriented background with limited mathematics. Moreover, they need to know about the technique of x-ray scattering, but do not intend to become an expert. The aim of this book is to explain basic principles and applications of x-ray scattering in a simple way using many practical examples followed by more elaborate case studies. The book contains a separate chapter on the different types of order/disorder in soft matter that play such an important role in modern self-assembling systems. Finally the last chapter treats soft matter surfaces and thin film that are increasingly used in coatings and in many technological applications, such as liquid crystal displays and nanostructured block copolymer films. This book has been written for the large community of soft matter students and scientists.

With the advent of even more advanced synchrotron radiation sources and new sophisticated instrumentation this novel technique is expected to experience a boom. The comprehensive and detailed presentation of theoretical and experimental aspects of the scattering of evanascent x-ray and neutron waves inside a solid makes this book particularly useful for tutorial courses. Particular emphasis is put on the use of this technique to extract microscopic information (correlation functions) from the real structure of a surface, from buried and magnetic interfaces and from surface roughness.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic thin films grown on solid surfaces are of great importance in applications such as microelectronics, biosensors, lubrication, and coatings. Using neutron diffraction and synchrotron x-ray scattering, we have conducted experiments to study the growth and structure of alkane films on solid surfaces. Our neutron diffraction study of a high-coverage monolayer of tetracosane (an alkane-chain molecule containing 24 carbon atoms) adsorbed on a graphite substrate shows that, near room temperature, the monolayer has a different structure than in a lower coverage monolayer investigated previously. Upon heating, it transforms from a crystalline to a liquid-crystal-like phase. For dotriacontane (an alkane chain molecule containing 32 carbon atoms, denoted C32) films adsorbed on silicon wafers, our x-ray specular reflectivity measurements show a unique structure in that the first one or two layers of molecules are oriented with their long axis parallel to the surface and are followed by a layer of molecules oriented with their long axis perpendicular to the substrate. As more molecules are added onto the substrate, bulk particles having two different structures nucleate on top of the film. For C32 grown on a single-crystal silver surface, x-ray diffraction shows that monolayer and multilayer films have a different crystal structure near room temperature. Specular x-ray reflectivity measurements demonstrate that multilayer films exhibit a layered structure even when they are fluid at high temperatures. At higher coverage, bulk particles nucleate with three different orientations. The structure and growth behavior of alkane films discovered in this research may help design better methods to grow organic crystals for microelectronics devices and to develop better lubricants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron scattering is arguably the most powerful technique available for looking inside materials and seeing what the atoms are doing. This textbook provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the many different ways neutrons are being used to investigate the behaviour of atoms and molecules in bulk matter. It is written in a pedagogical style, and includes many examples and exercises. Every year, thousands of experiments are performed at neutron scattering facilities around the world, exploring phenomena in physics, chemistry, materials science, as well as in interdisciplinary areas such as biology, materials engineering, and cultural heritage. This book fulfils a need for a modern and pedagogical treatment of the principles behind the various different neutron techniques, in order to provide scientists with the essential formal tools to design their experiments and interpret the results. The book will be of particular interest to researchers using neutrons to study the atomic-scale structure and dynamics in crystalline solids, simple liquids and molecular fluids by diffraction techniques, including small-angle scattering and reflectometry, and by spectroscopic methods, ranging from conventional techniques for inelastic and quasielastic scattering to neutron spin-echo and Compton scattering. A comprehensive treatment of magnetic neutron scattering is given, including the many and diverse applications of polarized neutrons.

Book excerpt: Large-scale structures encompass a broad area of science involving soft matter, biomaterials, and nanotechnology, defined by relatively weak interactions and length scales that extend from nanometer to micrometer. The key features of such systems that require characterization and quantification are surfaces and interfaces, adsorption, thin films, and self-assembly and hierarchical structures in solution and the solid phase. The neutron scattering techniques of neutron reflectivity and small-angle neutron scattering have emerged over the past two decades as important probes of these characteristic features of large-scale structures. In this chapter, the fundamentals of the two techniques are described in detail and the important experimental aspects summarized. Their application over a broad range of science is presented, in a way that highlights their unique properties and their important contribution to the field.

Book excerpt: Scattering experiments, using X-ray, light and neutron sources (in historical order) are key techniques for studying structure and dynamics in systems containing colliods, polymers, surfactants and biological macromolecules, summarized here as soft condensed matter. The education in this field in Europe is very heterogeneous and frequently inadequate, which severely limits an efficient use of these methods, especially at large-scale facilities. The series of "Bombannes" schools and the completely revised and updated second edition of the lecture notes are devoted to a practical approach to current methodology of static and dynamic techiques. Basic information on data interpretation, on the complementarity of the different types of radiation, as well as information on recent applications and developments is presented. The aim is to avoid over - as well as under-exploitation of data.
