Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developmental NeuroPsychobiology reviews a variety of topics related to developmental neuropsychobiology, a discipline that encompasses developmental neuroscience and developmental psychobiology. This book discusses embryonic mechanisms and embryogenesis as well as sexual differentiation of the brain, synaptic plasticity, and parent-offspring relationships. The development of olfactory control over behavior is also discussed. This book is comprised of 16 chapters and begins with an analysis of intrinsic mechanisms, including those underlying expression of pattern information at the cellular level and pattern formation in the vertebrate visual system. The next chapters also deal with pattern, but at a higher order, focusing upon the implications of the establishment of systems and how the sequences whereby these systems become established are manifested in the development of behavior. The morphogenetic role of neurotransmitters in embryonic development is also considered, along with structural and functional sexual dimorphisms in the brain and how steroid hormones alter brain organization. The final chapter evaluates previous models of the forces driving parent-offspring relations and offers an alternative view in which both infant-infant interactions and offspring-parent interactions result in mutually beneficial outcomes. This monograph is intended for advanced workers in the biological and/or psychological sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In collaboration with physicist and mathematician Hans Carlos Hofmann he developed the hard-software combination CATEEM® in 1989, which allows cartography of electric changes of the human brain in real time, not only for diagnostic purposes but also for therapy control in medicine and psychology. Recently, the technology has also been introduced into market research under the topic of “Neuromarketing”, where a combination of these brain maps “(enkephaloglyphs” obtained by Neurocode-Tracking) together with Eye-Tracking opens a new dimension of brain research. More than 100 publications proof the benefit of the technology in research and practice. The current book provides a representative overview on the use of neurophysiological methods during drug discovery aiming also at the need of saving animals. The holistic approach describes the feasibility of this goal and emphasizes the possibility to carry over parameters of drug effectiveness in rats to testing in humans. The use of identical parameters of drug induced changes of electric activity in rats and humans documents a very good example of translational medicine, which is not reached easily by use of any other method. In addition, large databases in rats and humans meanwhile allow yet unknown classifications of herbal medicines as well as elucidation of their mechanisms of action.

Methods in Behavioral Pharmacology covers all paradigms without reference to specific pharmacological compounds. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the methodology used to study the behavioral effects of legal and illegal drugs. It also provides an in-depth presentation of dependent variables, their quantification and a critical evaluation of their advantages and disadvantages. An excellent work, contributed to by well-known experts in the different fields of behavioral pharmacology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zuckerman received his Ph.D. in psychology from New York University, Graduate School of Arts and Science in 1954 with a specialization in clinical psychology. After graduation, he worked for three years as a clinical psychologist in state hospitals in Norwich, Connecticut and Indianapolis, Indiana. While in the latter position the Institute for Psychiatric Research was opened in the same medical center where he was working as a clinical psychologist. He obtained a position there with a joint appointment in the department of psychiatry. This was his first interdisciplinary experience with other researchers in psychiatry, biochemistry, psychopharmacology, and psychology. His first research areas were personality assessment and the relation between parental attitudes and psychopathology. During this time, he developed the first real trait-state test for affects, starting with the Affect Adjective Check List for anxiety and then broadening it to a three-factor trait-state test including anxiety, depression, and hostility (Multiple Affect Adjective Check List). Later, positive affect scales were added. Toward the end of his years at the institute, the first reports of the effects of sensory deprivation appeared and he began his own experiments in this field. These experiments, supported by grants from NIMH, occupied him for the next 10 years during his time at Brooklyn College, Adelphi University, and the research labs at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. This last job was his second interdisciplinary experience working in close collaboration with Harold Persky who added measures of hormonal changes to the sensory deprivation experiments. He collaborated with Persky in studies of hormonal changes during experimentally (hypnotically) induced emotions. During his time at Einstein, he established relationships with other principal investigators in the area of sensory deprivation and they collaborated on the book Sensory Deprivation: 15 years of research edited by John Zubek (1969). His chapter on theoretical constructs contained the idea of using individual differences in optimal levels of stimulation and arousal as an explanation for some of the variations in response to sensory deprivation. The first sensation seeking scale (SSS) had been developed in the early 1960's based on these constructs. At the time of his move to the University of Delaware in 1969, he turned his full attention to the SSS as the operational measure of the optimal level constructs. This was the time of the drug and sexual revolutions on and off campuses and research relating experience in these areas to the basic trait paid off and is continuing to this day in many laboratories. Two books have been written on this topic: Sensation Seeking: Beyond the Optimal Level of Arousal, 1979; Behavioral Expressions and Biosocial Bases of Sensation Seeking, 1994. Research on sensation seeking in America and countries around the world continues at an unabated level of journal articles, several hundred appearing since the 1994 book on the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two new criminological approaches are defined and applied to categories of crime in Routine Activity and Rational Choice, now available in paperback. Routine activity analyzes the criminal event, and avoids motivations and psychology as topics for discussion, whereas rational choice approaches crime as purposive behavior designed to meet the offender's commonplace needs, such as money, status, sex, and excitement. These conceptual models are both employed to analyze such crimes as drunk driving, gun use, kidnapping, and political violence. This volume discusses the relationship of these theories to more traditional approaches to crime studies. The Advances in Criminological Theory series encourages theory construction and validation in the articles and themes selected for publication. It also furthers the free exchange of ideas, propositions, and postulates. Following publication of the first volume, Michael J. Lynch of Florida State University asserted that "Advances in Criminological Theory is to be applauded as an attempt to revive criminological theory by providing an accessible outlet." Contributions to this volume include: Pierre Tremblay, "Searching for Suitable Co-offenders"; Raymond Paternoster and Sally Simpson, "A Rational Choice Theory of Corporate Crime"; Richard B. Felson, "Predatory and Dispute-related Violence"; Gordon Trasler, "Conscience, Opportunity, Rational Choice, and Crime"; Ezzat A. Fattah, "The Rational Choice/Opportunity Perspectives as a Vehicle for Integrating Criminological and Victimological Theories"; Patricia L. Brantingham and Paul J. Brantingham, "Environment, Routine, and Situation"; Maurice Cusson, "A Strategic Analysis of Crime"; Richard W. Harding, "Gun Use in Crime, Rational Choice, and Social Learning Theory."
