Book excerpt: The comparative investigation of the acquisition of gender in Spanish by early and late bilinguals of different language combinations is highly debated and crucial as the phenomenon of gender involves grammatical features that differ in all three languages under investigation. Against this background, both early and late bilinguals face an arduous learning task which differs in complexity. Couched within a generative framework, the empirical study focuses on 257 participants with different levels of proficiency in Spanish ranging from low to advanced, and through a series of tests aims to discover which extra-linguistic and intra-linguistic factors act as triggers for non-native outcomes in adult heritage speakers and L2 learners. The observed morphological variability is argued not to stem from a representational (i.e. syntactic) deficit, but rather from a mapping problem in L2 learners and heritage speakers. Successful attainment in terms of gender is possible but dependent on the interplay between various extralinguistic and linguistic factors.

In der globalisierten Welt, in der Nationen miteinander kooperieren und einzelne Kulturen sich ständig miteinander treffen, muss man für eine erfolgreiche Kommunikation mindestens eine Fremdsprache beherrschen. Durch das Erlernen von Fremdsprachen werden Vertreter verschiedener Nationen fähig, in interkulturellen Situationen erfolgreich zu handeln. Die Notwendigkeit des Fremdsprachenlernens und die Verantwortung der Lehrkräfte nahm deshalb in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten stark zu: Fremdsprachenkenntnisse sind für immer mehr Leute für Arbeit und Karriere unentbehrlich, in den Schulen lernen Schüler schon zwei unterschiedliche Fremdsprachen, wobei es immer mehr Sprachenlernende gibt, die ihre Sprachkenntnisse auch außerhalb des schulischen Unterrichts entwickeln wollen. Der Grund dafür ist, dass – obwohl Sprachenlernen traditionell im schulischen Bereich geschieht –, wegen der schon erwähnten Faktoren immer unterschiedlichere Lernergruppen entstehen, die individuelle Wege zum Fremdsprachenlernen brauchen. Deshalb erlebt Sprachenlernen mit PrivatlehrerInnen oder an privaten Sprachschulen gerade eine Blütezeit, immer mehr Institutionen und Schulen werden gegründet, um diese Bedürfnisse zu befriedigen. Diese Sprachschulen bieten verschiedene Kurse, verwenden diverse Methoden und sind von unterschiedlicher Qualität. Sprachenlernende suchen immer die effektivsten, neuesten Methoden, die für sie persönlich förderlich sind, durch die sie gute Sprachkenntnisse erlangen können. Doch nicht immer können sie erfolgreich eine für sie persönlich angemessene Methode finden. Außerdem garantiert die hohe Zahl der sprachlichen Institutionen kein ebenso hohes Niveau, es gibt also Menschen, die erfolglos versuchen, eine Fremdsprache zu lernen. Sie suchen deshalb nach Alternativen, nach neuen Methoden, die sich an anderen Prinzipien orientieren und im Vergleich zu anderen Methoden eine höhere Effektivität versprechen.

Its theoretical part offers an insight into the structure of the multilingual mental lexicon which is a product of the interplay of a whole array of cross-linguistic factors in the minds of multilingual speakers. The empirical part reports the findings of an empirical study which aimed to investigate connections which are formed between multiple languages in a multilingual mind. All the aspects, analyzed in the experiments are part of a broader question of how multilinguals make their lexical decisions and, more specifically, how they recognize words from different languages. The book closes with the discussion of the role of the obtained results for multilingual didactics as well as some possible areas for future research.

Book excerpt: In scholarship, classical (Renaissance) humanism is usually strictly distinguished from 'neo-humanism', which, especially in Germany, flourished at the beginning of the 19th century. While most classical humanists focused on the practical imitation of Latin stylistic models, 'neohumanism' is commonly believed to have been mainly inspired by typically modern values, such as authenticity and historicity. Bas van Bommel shows that whereas 'neohumanism' was mainly adhered to at the German universities, at the Gymnasien a much more traditional educational ideal prevailed, which is best described as 'classical humanism.' This ideal involved the prioritisation of the Romans above the Greeks, as well as the belief that imitation of Roman and Greek models brings about man's aesthetic and moral elevation. Van Bommel makes clear that 19th century classical humanism dynamically related to modern society. On the one hand, classical humanists explained the value of classical education in typically modern terms. On the other hand, competitors of the classical Gymnasium laid claim to values that were ultimately derived from classical humanism. 19th century classical humanism should therefore not be seen as a dried-out remnant of a dying past, but as the continuation of a living tradition.
