Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive overview of neovascular glaucoma (NVG), which is an extraordinarily aggressive type of secondary glaucoma that has often been discussed as an afterthought rather than the focal subject in glaucoma reference books. NVG is considered an end stage complication in patients with certain underlying retinal diseases, most commonly diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions. Historically, NVG has been one of the most difficult types of glaucoma to manage, with a high failure rate for traditional glaucoma surgery, and often progression of the underlying retinal disease despite “standard of care” treatment. Chapters cover advancements made in recent years in the management of the underlying ischemic retinal conditions that lead to NVG, including the use of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) medications. Additionally, chapters discuss glaucoma surgeries, which have become less invasive in recent years with the advent of microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). This book offers an up-to-date reference regarding current concepts in the diagnosis, as well as medical, laser, and surgical treatment of NVG in the anti-VEGF era, with attention to the close collaboration between glaucoma specialists and retina specialists. Neovascular Glaucoma - Current Concepts in Diagnosis and Treatment will change the way ophthalmologists manage NVG, ensuring patients better outcomes. It is a must-have resource for ophthalmologists worldwide.

This offers a sound basis for addressing the many controversies that surround these disorders, which collectively constitute the most common cause of visual impairment or blindness. The book is divided into two sections, the first of which addresses the basic science and encompasses vascular anatomy, blood supply and flow, and retinal tolerance time to acute ischemia. The second, clinical, section covers the presentation, clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of the full range of vascular occlusive disorders of the retina, the choroid, the anterior segment of the eye, ophthalmic manifestations of carotid artery disease and the optic nerve. Ocular Vascular Occlusive Disorders, written by a distinguished world leader in the field, will be invaluable for general ophthalmologists, and particularly for retina specialists, neuro-ophthalmologists, and researchers.

The book starts with a discussion of current achievements and limitations of the medical therapy of glaucoma. The focus is then placed on conventional glaucoma procedures such as trabeculectomy, deep sclerectomy, and glaucoma drainage device surgery. A chapter is dedicated to the postoperative management of filtering procedures. Further chapters review the role of the ocular surface and the issue of modulation of the scarring processes in glaucoma surgery. The second section covers some promising new devices and techniques. The final part addresses the surgical approaches to some specific clinical challenges: angle-closure glaucoma, concomitant cataract and glaucoma, pediatric glaucoma, and refractory glaucomas. This volume provides residents and general ophthalmologists with valuable new insights into the fascinating and sometimes complex aspects of glaucoma surgery. It will also assist glaucoma specialists when they review and validate therapeutic approaches with their patients.

Today anti-VEGF agents are used for a range of indications from inflammation-related choroidal neovascularization to macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion or diabetic retinopathy. Beyond VEGF, there is an array of target areas under investigation – not only for vascular pathologies such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease, but also for degenerative, infectious and inflammatory retinal conditions. This publication discusses many aspects from basic research on the retina, to animal models for retinal drug delivery, retinal diseases that are amenable to pharmacotherapy and also drugs and mechanisms in retinal diseases. Anyone concerned with the management of retinal diseases - the general ophthalmologist and the retina specialist alike – will find this book indispensable reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book was written prior to 1991 and it seemed appropriate to revise and update the text in view of the rapid expansion in information which has occurred in the last decade. Furthermore, in the first edition, the reproduction of some of the illustrations was not of sufficient standard to be of value to the reader. Accordingly some of the inadequate figures have been replaced by colour figures which have been inserted into the text. Colour has also been included because many histopathological illustrations, e. g. special stains such as Gram, PAS, trichrome stains etc. , and immunohistochemical reactions, are much better appreciated. With regard to references, I have taken advantage of the currently available access to all the medical literat ure, which is what I anticipate will be the course of action of the reader. Glasgow, 2001 Acknowledgements It is a pleasure to re cord the support I have received in the last decade from Professors Wallace Foulds, Colin Kirkness and Gordon Dutton and from Mr Bertil Damato in their continuing efforts to educate me in the subtleties of clinical ophthalmology. I am particularly indebted to Dr Sarah Coupland who provided the information on lymphoid neoplasia which is included in this book and I must thank Dr Weng Sehu who established the computer equipment which has been so valuable in the preparation of the new illustrations.
